Mass. transportation secretary: People are going to need to pick up E-ZPasses

Cash will not be accepted at Tobin Bridge tolls beginning early next year, and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation is hoping to transition several other major thoroughfares to electronic-only payment systems within several years, the state transportation secretary said today. Davey said the changes would necessitate a widespread shift to E-ZPasses. He announced that the passes will now be provided to AAA members for free at 17 AAA offices across the state.

Father, two children found safe in Connecticut after alleged Braintree abduction

BRAINTREE — A police search for two children who were allegedly abducted here on Monday afternoon by their father came to an end several hours later when the youths were found safe in Connecticut.

Massachusetts State Police said shortly before midnight that the father, identified by Braintree police as Jon T. Lockwood, 54, and his two children were found Monday night at a 7-Eleven convenience store in South Windsor, Conn.

“The children were safe and unharmed,” State Police said in a statement, adding that Lockwood will be sent back to Massachusetts to face criminal charges.

Braintree police said earlier in the evening that Lockwood had kidnapped his 8-year-old son, Patrick, and 10-year-old daughter, Sarah, at about 4:30 p.m. after a struggle with their foster mother.

Two convicted in 2011 Hyde Park double murder

A jury convicted two Mattapan men today in the July 2011 double murder of the daughter of a retired Boston police detective and her boyfriend inside the couple’s Hyde Park home, prosecutors said. A Suffolk Superior Court jury found both Michael Corbin, 42, and Earl Fulgiam, 33, guilty of first-degree murder for their roles in a brutal armed robbery in which Billie Marie Kee, 24, and her boyfriend, Kevin Thomas, Jr., 32, were both stabbed and shot repeatedly.

Three victims injured, two critically, after car collides with police cruiser in Middleborough

Three victims, including a police officer, were transported to area hospitals following a car crash in Middleborough this evening, a firefighter said. The crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at 400 Wareham St. , according to Middleborough FireFighter Mike Allie.Two of the victims were in critical condition and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The police officer, Allie said, “was less critical. How less critical he was, I don’t know.” He said that the officer was transported to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth.

Bowler rejected a defense request to have the US Bureau of Prisons keep that information from prosecutors without a court order or the defense lawyers’ consent.

Driver who struck and fatally injured MIT visiting professor has been identified, officials say

The driver of the truck that struck and killed visiting MIT scientist Kanako Miura as she rode her bicycle near Kenmore Square on Sunday has been identified, said two law enforcement officials. He is cooperating with investigators, one of the officials said. Miura was riding near the intersection of Beacon Street and Charlesgate West at about 3:30 p.m. when she was hit by a truck and sustained massive injuries. Miura, 36, had been working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since the fall of 2012 in the university’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

Federal prosecutors today insisted that lawyers for James “Whitey” Bulger do not need the name of an FBI confidential informant the defense believes will help undermine the credibility of Kevin Weeks and John Martorano, former Bulger allies who are expected to testify against the gangster. In papers filed in US District Court, US Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office said the defense already has an unredacted copy of an FBI report from 2000 summarizing what the confidential informant said, and they are not legally entitled to any more information on the informant’s identity.

Rambling bear causes stir in Lincoln, Weston

Police are urging residents to keep an eye out a black bear in Lincoln after one was sighted Sunday afternoon. The black bear was reported in the area of Route 117 and Route 126, and officials believe the bear was likely looking for food. This morning, Weston police also received reports of a medium-size black bear, over 100 pounds, in the northern part of town, Weston Police Lieutenant John Lyons said. It was likely the same bear, he said.

N.Y. man charged with sexually abusing children while he was swim coach at Arlington Boys & Girls Club in late ’70s

A New York man was arraigned today on charges of sexually abusing several boys while he was the swim coach at a Boys & Girls club in Arlington during the late 1970s. Paul Collins, 62, who was arrested Friday in his Long Island home, pleaded not guilty, and was ordered held on $250,000 bail. Prosecutors said Collins has admitted to sexual contact with two accusers and told investigators he may have had contact with the other two as well.

Mass. high court orders new trial in lawsuit of man paralyzed after trampolining into Framingham pool

The state’s highest court has ordered a new trial in a lawsuit brought against two property owners by a man who was paralyzed when he jumped from a trampoline into a backyard wading pool in Framingham. Cleber Coleta Dos Santos had unsuccessfully sued Maria A. and Jose T. Coleta, who owned the Framingham home and set up the trampoline next to the pool.

Lynn pastor faces charges of sexually assaulting five children

A Lynn pastor accused of sexually assaulting five children over several years was released after posting $25,000 cash bail following his arraignment in Lynn District Court, prosecutors said. An automatic not-guilty plea was entered Tuesday on behalf of Daniel Lopez, 62, on seven counts of indecent assault and battery of a child under 14 and one count of rape of a child, said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, a spokeswoman for the Essex County district attorney’s office.
