But on this dreary, drizzly morning, thousands of runners and their supporters came out to finish what they started, running the final mile from Kenmore Square to the finish line and reclaiming the long-imagined moment they were denied.

Bishop M. Thomas Shaw has learned that a tumor removed from his brain last week is malignant and he will need cancer treatments, according to the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.
Shaw underwent brain surgery on May 17 after tests revealed the mass, the diocese said in a post on its website Friday. The bishop met with his doctors at the Dana Farber Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center on Friday, where they discussed the diagnosis, according to the diocese.
In the next few weeks, Shaw, 67, is expected to begin radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
The Rev. Mally Lloyd, who spent time with Shaw before his operation last week and continued to speak for him, wrote an e-mail to the diocese addressing the cancer diagnosis.

An Angel Flight that took off from Hanscom Field in Bedford crashed in New York on Friday night, killing at least two of the three people on board, according to authorities.
The Piper PA 34 aircraft was 60 miles from its Rome, N.Y., destination when it went down near Garoga, N.Y., at 5:10 p.m., said Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
The bodies of one male and one female were recovered from the scene of the crash, according to Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey. Authorities believe the body of the third person was inside the aircraft, which was submerged in the Garoga reservoir, and a search will be conducted during the daylight on Saturday, he said.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited the memorial to the Boston Marathon bombing victims Friday in Copley Square, leaving a bouquet at the site and greeting other people who came to pay their respects.
Napolitano quietly took in many of the items left at the memorial, lingering for a while at a sign left for the youngest victim killed in the explosions, 8-year-old Martin Richard of Dorchester.
The sign read, “Martin Richard, age 8, wise beyond his years, left the world a powerful message. . . . No more hurting people. Peace.”
The secretary laid the bouquet in the center of the memorial near a display of four crucifixes bearing the names of the dead and a number of stuffed animals.

A Peabody man is facing a motor vehicle homicide charge for an early-morning crash on Friday that killed his passenger when their car slammed into a parked truck, officials said. Michael J. Fowler, 37, faces charges that include motor vehicle homicide while drunk; operating under the influence, second offense; and leaving the scene of personal injury with death resulting, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office said. The victim was identified as Daniel Walker, 31, also of Peabody, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors will be allowed to conduct criminal background checks on jurors in the trial of James “Whitey” Bulger, a federal judge ruled today. Citing the “unique circumstances of the case,” US District Judge Denise J. Casper, who is presiding over the notorious gangster’s trial, ruled this afternoon that the checks could be made. Prosecutors had contended, among other things, that given the time, effort, and resources that will be invested in the trial, the background checks should be done in order to avoid the risk that someone would be seated on the jury who should not be.

Springer allegedly choked a woman into unconsciousness on April 6 in New Hampshire. He is also wanted in connection with a shooting in Lynn earlier this month.

Two people were shot this afternoon on Michigan Avenue in Dorchester, police said. A Boston police spokesman confirmed that a male and a female were shot at about 4:20 p.m. He said at least one of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries. He had no further information about the victims. At about 5:15 p.m., police were keeping pedestrians and reporters several hundred yards from the scene, which was located near a small public park.

In a six-page request filed today, US Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office asked Judge Denise J. Casper to impose a gag order on J.W. Carney Jr. and Henry Brennan, the two lawyers representing the 83-year-old Bulger at taxpayers’ expense. Jury selection is set to start June 4.

Suffolk County prosecutors have charged the sister of an accused murderer with threatening two witnesses in his case over the phone and on Facebook. She is the sister of Pablo Flores, also of Charlestown, who is accused of fatally shooting Steven Jones in Charlestown on May 7.

Jane Richard, the younger sister of Boston Marathon bombing victim Martin Richard, has been released from Boston Children’s Hospital, the Richard family said this afternoon. “While we remain devastated over Martin’s death and all that has happened to us, Jane’s determination for getting better is an inspiring source of strength for the entire family,” the family said in a statement. Jane Richard had spent 39 days in the intensive care unit. She underwent 12 surgeries. The family said the little girl, whose left leg was severed below the knee in the bomb attack, was “in good spirits.”

A woman was killed while trying to cross Cranberry Highway in Wareham Wednesday evening, Wareham police said. She was struck by an eastbound 2002 Jeep Cherokee driven by a 22-year-old Wareham man, police said in a statement issued last night. The driver was not injured.

A woman was taken to Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital today after being bitten in the hand by a pit bull while she was trying to break up a fight between it and another dog, police said. A 52-year-old woman called animal control officers to her Ridge Street apartment in Roslindale around 8:30 a.m., police said. She requested that the dog that bit her be removed, and animal control officers took custody of the 5-year-old pit bull, police said. There was no further information on the severity of her injuries.
