Kate Winslet will win for all the wrong reasons: She’s overdue, she gets tastefully naked, her character ages well into the Latex Decades, she’s a regretful Nazi. Melissa Leo does something much harder, getting under the skin of a poverty-stricken woman in an out-of-the-way corner of America with a total absence of actorly vanity.

    Kate Winslet, The Reader

  • Should win
    Melissa Leo, Frozen River

  • Shouldn't be here

  • Was robbed
    Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky

If it was a decent year for women in movies, this collection suggests that’s truer in the supporting categories. Mother Superior Meryl Streep belongs in the new “Friday the 13th,” for instance. The race really comes down to Kate Winslet and whether voters are conned into seeing as brave her scrupulous performance as a Nazi guard. She’s owed, they say, but by that karmic math, isn't Melissa Leo? If ambivalence over Winslet sets in, the winner is Anne Hathaway’s jabbering junkie.
