Earth Hour 2009

Started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour quickly grew into a global observance. More than 1,000 cities in over 80 countries observed Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday March 28th, as homes, office towers and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30 pm local time to raise awareness about climate change and the threat from rising greenhouse gas emissions. Collected here are a series of before-and-after photographs - which (starting with the second one below) will fade between "on" and "off" when clicked. Let me state that again, since I know not everyone reads the whole intro here - starting with image #2 below, click on the image to see an animated fade between "on" and "off". This effect requires javascript to be enabled. (17 photos total)

Despite global communications reaching every nook and corner of the world, many people are not aware what is happening around them. Most of the politicians around the world are either ignorant or complacent to what is happening around them. This ignorance is complex and the earth-hour is a miniscule attempt to illumine the ignorant. Rabindranth Tagore said 'do not blame the darkness around you but try to light a small, however small it might be, lamp'. This dark hour is such an attempt to light up the dark side of human activities that ultimately harm all humans if not by thermo nuclear explosions.

Global warming? What a joke. Humans are not the cause of it, nor are their machines. Mars warms at the same rate Earth does. Hell.. if you think of it Plants would rather have a carbon dioxide rich environment and lots of warm! You guys are morons to think that global warming is done by us.

this is hoppless! we the simple people we want to changes thinks BUT all the goverments and the industrail areas that are the actuall merderers of our planets they didnt shutdown their factories not even for 1 second!!!!!!

if all the factories that produce corbon diaoxyde and all the fires and the illigal pohising and all the non perpuse movents of the cars was stopped just for 1 hour every day they could reduce our polution a lot more thatn just 1 hour of few buildings!!!!!

they are toying with us they are trying to make as feel quilty and that we alone can stop it, when they are getting reacher and reacher every minuete and they dont understand that all the money on earth will not save them when they will not have EARTH to leave on!

the human race must wake up NOW and find drastical solutions and not playing arroudn with few lights!

These before/after photos highlight astounding differences. However I'm a little annoyed by skimming the comments that "global warming" has been solidified into the catch all term for anything to do with the earth’s climate, human energy use, problems with industry, global climate CHANGE (a combination of man-made and naturally occurring cycles and phenomenon), pollution, industrial inefficiency and waste management issues.

The public attention becomes fixated on this show rather than funding, building and maintaining “boring” projects and real world solutions such as: desalination plants, the newest hydrocarbon exploration and extraction technology, nuclear plants, sewage treatment plants, waste cycling, waste storage and waste disposal, cleaner mineral and metal mining (you can’t have “clean” tech (or ANY tech) without these), flood zone urban engineering, urban food growth and farming.

Instead we get focused on a global show. It’s a pretty cool show but please do not forget that this is a performance piece. A powerful one (pun intended) and hopefully one that will inspire some people to look deeper at our planet , the resources available and our industry (it’s benefits and not just the negatives) rather than swallow the simplistic “save our planet” ideas thrown about.

It’s NOT “save our planet” kids, that’s what you learned in kindergarten (or the international equivalent you did or did not attend) The truth of what we (and all past and present human generations) are faced with is “Save humanities quality of life” and "global warming" has precious little to do with it.

On one hand I would love to see this trend keep up at least for the sake of minimizing light pollution. I'd love to see the hour become one global night for astronomy ; allowing those in urban and densely populated areas to reconnect with the night. That would be so rich and rewarding, more than the throngs of uninformed people saying "Look! I’m fighting global warming by turning off my desk lamp!" and telling their neighbors that they are killing the planet by not participating in this earth hour.

On the other hand I wonder and I also fear a little; how many of the organizers and pressure pushers would like to enact legislation that prevents people from using “unnecessary” electricity at all times, or plastic, gas, water even food. Such legislation already exists and has existed in multiple areas around the globe for various reasons. And it has rarely worked out the way those with good intentions had hoped it would.

Awesome photos but I’m left a little worried. I'm worried about who is going to be doing the defining of what is "unnecessary". I'm worried about what and how much will be seen as unnecessary. Finally, I'm worried for whom.

The act is so noble. If the Governments can do it why not Individuals and why only once a year - let this be the rule or law once every month to start and make this into a habit. Good Luck and thanks for your efforts to bring about awareness

No impact on our planet just a visual stimulation. The one true God has
not limited our use of what he placed here for our use. If you don't understand
that the one responsible for our climate knew what "they" were doing then
how must you reason what is to happen next. It is a wonderment to trust in
something like we are asked to live our lives in. Earth has been (changing)
for many many years and we've been here such a few....relax, we will be fine.

Here in Germany they told us not to participate in this event since power plants always have to calculate an estimated energy use and that a sudden unexpected drop in energy use could damage the power plants. If this would happen, the repairation of the plants would actually use up more energy then the amount that was saved by turning the lights off. Even though I haven't heard that this happened somewhere.

Posted by Balu July 12, 09 09:50 PM
.

There are a few unfortunate facts about efforts such as this. Like the myth of global warming (the planet has actually cooled in the last decade), this bit of energy saving was not a saving at all. Estimates indicate that the energy needed to restore all of the power consuming devices that were shut off for that hour was more than was saved. Another worthless effort in an attempt to continue to keep Al Gore's inconvenient lies dangling like a carrot in front of an uninformed population.

Woe is us.

Very beautiful. A great job!
Was such a good idea about turning off the lights and the impact in many ways for us and for our future generations, it awares us more about taking care of the world that God created for us His creatures and that we shoud care about it, but olso we shoud remember that the most valuable in earth nesides the animals and plants:
we are, yes the wealthiest thing in the Earth Plannet is its people.
congratulations for this beautiful work.

For those of you who live in Toronto, and is ashamed, then , please do us a favour and move somewhere else where the luxury of having such a beautiful place to live would be most appreciated. I am proud of being a Canadian and love Toronto. If we are to pratice the Mother Earth Day then we should do it everyday not just when it is convenient for us to do when reminded. I think we should all start with the great big Government buildings first as they waste for energy than most citizens. This is only my opinion and thank you for sharing these wonderful pics to us. Why did we only get to see the beautiful ones and not the areas where poverty lives with out it each and every day. Their beauty is just survial.

what crap, all this save the earth bs. tell ya what folks the earth's been here for millions of years, civilized man has been here for 2000ish. If you all really think in 2000 years we can destroy something thats survived for millions of years you got another think comin. Instead of calling it earth day call it human day cause thats what were trying to save is ourselves. I guarantee you earth will be here long after humans are gone regardless of what we "do" to earth.
