MAYOR THOMAS Menino’s threat to withdraw Boston police from the Secure Communities program unless federal immigration officials limit their deportation efforts to only those immigrants who have committed serious crimes is an affront to law-abiding citizens. Why should the rest of us who pay our taxes be forced to underwrite this? Can any sane person really explain why it should not be illegal to be an illegal immigrant in Massachusetts?
If Menino and others do not want to treat illegal immigrants as illegal, then they should propose legislation to open the US borders to anyone who wants to come in, not just those who sneak into our country illegally. At least that way we would get more immigrants who are highly educated. At present many law-abiding citizens in their own countries are denied the chance to emigrate to the United States.
In Germany I once met a young woman who actually won a green card in the lottery, but could not demonstrate sufficient financial means to obtain entry to the United States.
I should have suggested that she toss the green card and smuggle herself into Massachusetts instead.
