Speakers were quick to trot out a number of impressive metrics: From the almost 3,000 jobs that the first class of MassChallenge graduates generated, the $362.5 million in investment the class had brought in, and the hundreds and hundreds of start-ups given a boost as they go from idea to execution.

The evening was emceed by Orlando Jones,who said that it was organizations like MassChallenge that inspired individuals like himself to go against the odds and believe in themselves, helping change themselves while changing the world.

Governor Deval Patrick was one of the keynote speakers, addressing the need for investing in education and innovation in order to turn around the economy through the recession. "If you really believe in the American dream, you don't leave it to chance," he said. "MassChallenge is a critical part of that opportunity."

And after all the kind introductions, the real stars emerged: The 26 finalists each were given a 1-minute pitch opportunity before the audience.
