Loews Hotels & Resorts to buy the Back Bay Hotel in Boston

Loews Hotels & Resorts said it has agreed to buy the Back Bay Hotel in Boston from Doyle Collection.

Loews is not disclosing financial details of the transaction.

When the acquisition closes, something expected to happen next month, it will give Loews Hotels & Resorts a presence in the Boston market, a company spokeswoman said.

Based in Dublin, Doyle Collection is an operator of luxury hotels.

Located at the corner of Berkeley and Stuart streets, the Back Bay Hotel is one of Boston’s historic buildings. Built in the 1920s as the Boston Police Department Headquarters and occupied as such until the late 1990s, the property was extensively redeveloped in 2004.

For a time, the Doyle Collection operated the property under the name of Jurys Boston Hotel before changing its name to the Back Bay Hotel in 2009.

The hotel has 225 guest rooms, meeting and event space as well as two dining options, Cuffs, an Irish Bar, and the Stanhope Grille, Loews said in a press release.

The announcement of the Back Bay Hotel in Boston follows another recent acquisition by Loews of the iconic 356-room Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Loews said its portfolio will now include 21 hotels, including two under construction in Orlando and Chicago.

“Boston is one of the most vibrant markets in the US, and an excellent city for a Loews property,” Jonathan Tisch, chairman of Loews Hotels & Resorts, said in a statement. “This one-of-a-kind, historic hotel is a unique addition to our growing portfolio.”
