Horsepower, grilles, and performance; these are just three things that are coming up again and again when describing the new vehicles of model year 2006. And it is just not one car line, but it seems like all the manufacturers are getting in on this craze. From the Acura TL's bumped up horsepower to the Volvo XC90 whose V8 engine boasts as being the most powerful model in Volvo's history, read on to see all the powered up highlights to look forward to in the coming model year.
RL The luxury sedan gets an optional technology package, with includes the collision mitigation braking system. Through a grill-mounted radar unit, it monitors potential front-end collisions and aims to reduce the impact by tightening the motorized seatbelt pretentioners in the front seat and slowing the vehicle through an automatic braking system.
TSX The sporty four-door sees its hp bumped up five points to 205. Outside, the TSX gets redesigned front and rear fascias, new sidesills, redesigned alloy wheels and integrated fog lamps. It also receives electronic brake assist.
TL The mid-size sedan gets a revised engine management system and steering angle sensor logic to help reduce torque steer.
A3 The all-new A3, introduced last spring, gets a 3.2-liter mated to a direct shift gearbox this winter.
A4 Three new A4 3.2 quattro models are available: the 6-speed manual sedan and station wagon and the 3.2 CVT multitronic FrontTrak front-wheel drive, which delivers full-time, all-speed traction control, on the sedan only. The A4 cabriolet in mid-2005 became available with a more performance oriented S line.
A6 The A6 also offers a new sedan with the 3.2-liter engine and the FrontTrak front-wheel drive. A new wagon has a 3.2-liter engine, tiptronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive.
A8 All of the luxury sedans will now have Audi's distinctive single front grille and adaptive front lights among other minor feature changes.
R Series The RS4 marks the return of the RS for the first time since the 2003 RS6. It features a 4.2-liter, normally aspirated, direct injection V-8 with 414 hp flowing to the compact sedan. It comes with a six-speed manual and driver-adjustable throttle control. Target release date is summer. The R9, introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2004 as a concept, is a two-passenger sports coupe with close to 500 hp, permanent all-wheel drive, magnetic ride shock absorbers, carbon ceramic disk brakes and a six-speed manual transmission.
Q7 The SUV shares a platform with the VW Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne, but has a six-inch longer wheelbase. It offers V-6, V-8 and V-10 engine options. The Q7 has all-wheel drive and adjustable air suspension, but is not expected to be capable of serious off-road performance. The midsize SUV should appear in the summer of 2006.
Carryovers: Audi TT coupe (with an expected redesign for 2007)
The 3 Series The all-new sedan was introduced in May. It grew in nearly every dimension: wheelbase, length, width and height. The new sedans come with improved dynamic stability control. In a first for BMW, the 3 series engines have magnesium/aluminum composite construction, electric coolant pump and volume-controlled oil pump. All wheel drive versions and a station wagon are available.
The 5 Series For 2006, the 550i replaces the 545i; it is be equipped with the new 4.8 liter, 360 hp V-8 first introduced in the 2006 750i and 750Li. The dynamic stability control system has upgraded functionality (e.g., brake fading compensation, brake standby, brake drying, and start-off assistant).
The 6 Series The four-seat coupe is rebadged as 650i, and is equipped with the new 4.8 liter, 360 hp V-8. It also gets upgraded dynamic stability control.
The M Series The M6 version of the new 650i will be introduced sometime in 2006. It will have 5.0 liter V-10 making 394 hp under normal driving conditions but can put out 500 hp at the push of a button. It will feature a seven-speed sequential manual gearbox with 11 shift options. Estimated 0-60 time is just a tick more than 4 seconds. The M5 will have the same engine. Based on the 5 series sedan, the M5 has three performance programs which offer 400 and 500 hp. The heavy cast-iron brakes that are used in favor of lighter ceramic brakes, which don't absorb heat as well, don't affect a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds. It has the same seven-speed sequential manual gearbox as the M6.
Z4 The two-door hardtop coupe is expected to be in production by summer. The new Z4 will feature BMW's new 3.0 liter, straight six with 265 hp. The rear-wheel drive concept has dynamic traction control, enhanced dynamic stability control, electric power steering and a 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited (by a compact among all German manufacturers) to 155 mph.
Lucerne With the addition of Lucerne, Buick's lineup is all new since 2002. The entry-luxury sedan is the first Buick with V-8 power in almost a decade. The 4.6L, 32-valve dual overhead cam engine delivers an estimated 275 hp in the performance-oriented CXS. The standard 3.8L Series III V-6 is rated at 197 hp. It is the first Buick to offer magnetic ride control and StabiliTrak, which enhance ride quality and performance.
Lacrosse The mid-size sedan, introduced in 2005, now offers a host of safety features as standard, including side curtain air bags and anti-lock brakes.
Terraza The mid-size crossover sports van receives GM's all-new 3900 3.9L V-6 variable valve technology engine, rated at 235 hp, on front-drive models of the Terraza CX and up level CXL version.
Rainier Buick's full-platform SUV picks up StabiliTrak system, integrated with traction control, as standard equipment.
Rendezvous The crossover gets a new, more powerful base engine: the 201 hp, 3500 3.5 liter, V-6. The CXL Plus comes with the 3.6 liter, V-6, VVT engine, rated at 242 hp. Rear park assist is now offered as standard.
CTS-V The four-door, rear-wheel drive CTS-V receives a new engine, the overhead valve 6.0 liter V-8 LS2 that is rated at 400 hp with 395 lb. ft. of torque. It achieves 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. Power is delivered through the six-speed manual Tremec T56 transmission that features a dual mass flywheel for reduced noise and vibration harshness.
DTS Cadillac's latest passenger car, the DTS front-wheel drive large luxury sedan comes equipped with the Northstar 291 hp 4.6L V-8 engine or 275 hp engine and mated to the Hydra-Matic 4T80-E four-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include dual-stage (driver) and dual-depth (front passenger) airbags, roof-rail curtain airbags, front seat side-impact thorax airbags; and radar-based adaptive cruise control with audible and visual alerts.
Escalade EXT The luxury pickup truck gets an optional power sliding tonneau cover that opens and closes at a touch of a button. It covers the bed and replaces the bulky to use manual tonneau covers. Also new is a sliding load floor, which holds about 1,000 pounds of cargo. It will be available later in 2006.
SRX Cadillac's crossover utility vehicle gets a standard power rear liftgate and improved step-over for easier vehicle exiting.
STS-V The all-new STS-V gets a 4.4-liter supercharged, dual overhead cam Northstar V8 SC engine producing an estimated 469 hp and 430 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine delivers 90 percent of its peak torque between 2200 and 6000 rpm, which helps put the STS-V in the under-5-second club for 0-to-60. The Northstar V-8 SC is mated to the all-new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission - the first use of GM's new six-speed automatic.
XLR The luxury roadster receives adaptive forward lighting system, a first-time application on a Cadillac that improves night driving vision. In addition, XM Satellite Radio with hidden antenna is now a standard feature.
XLR-V The ultra-luxury, high-performance rear-wheel drive roadster debuts a V model. Power comes from a supercharged Northstar V-8 SC that puts out 440 hp and 425 lb.-ft. torque. Chassis modifications include larger brakes; recalibrated magnetic ride control; larger front stabilizer bar and the addition of a rear stabilizer bar; stiffer rear lower control arm bushings; larger wheels and tires; a power steering fluid cooler; and a higher-capacity fuel pump. It gets the new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic.
Aveo The sub-compact gets standard dual-stage frontal air bags and the GM Passenger Sensing System, along with new, standard side-impact air bags for front-seat occupants.
Cobalt SS Available in coupe and sedan configurations, the new Cobalt SS models are equipped with an Ecotec 2.4L engine that produces 171 hp. The ultimate Cobalt performer will be the 205-hp Cobalt SS Supercharged.
Corvette The Z06 packs a hydroformed aluminum body structure, carbon fiber exterior panels with an exclusive fixed-roof coupe configuration, a race-bred suspension system and a new LS7 7.0 liter (427 cubic inch) V-8 rated at 505 hp. The Z06 is expected to deliver 0-60 performance of less than 4 seconds, quarter-mile elapsed times of less than 12 seconds and a top speed of more than 190 mph. An optional new six-speed paddle shift electronically controlled automatic transmission has a choice of three modes: drive, sport and paddle shift.
HHR With styling inspired by the 1949 Chevy Suburban, as well as the current SSR, it can be best described as a bulked up station wagon. It has a cargo capacity of approximately 63.1 cubic feet. The powertrain offerings consist of sophisticated Ecotec four-cylinder engines. All models include air conditioning, power windows and door locks, six-speaker CD stereo and remote keyless entry.
Impala The redesigned midsize comes with a new family of V-6 engines, which include variable valve timing for better performance and economy. The LS and LT models come with a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 211 hp. The LTZ gets the more powerful 3.9-liter V-6, good for 242 hp. The same engine is also available for the LT. The bigger V-6 features variable intake technology.
Impala SS The super sport version is powered by the all-new 5.3L small-block, 303-hp V-8 with displacement on demand technology, which regulates between eight-cylinder and four-cylinder operation and provides up to 8 percent improved fuel economy in certain light-load driving conditions.
Malibu SS, Malibu Maxx SS Both SS models are equipped with a new 3.9L high-output V-6 that produces 240 hp, 18-inch flangeless wheels, sport-tuned suspensions and unique styling enhancements.
Monte Carlo Sharing the same styling of the redesigned 2006 Impala, the two-door Monte Carlo is substantially revamped. In addition to the new front-end appearance, the rear fascia also has been restyled and it gets a better ride with a revised suspension. The Monte Carlo also shares the Impala's new family of V-6 engines ranging from 211 to 242 hp.
Monte Carlo SS The classic two-door Chevy muscle car is offered with the NASCAR-inspired 5.3 liter small block V-8 with displacement on demand technology that's good for 303 hp and 8 percent better fuel economy under certain driving conditions. It is mated to an enhanced hydra-matic four-speed automatic transmission.
Silverado GM's best-selling vehicle features a host of enhancements. New half-ton extended cab/short box models broaden the body style choices, while a new dual-port grille design and power dome hood (similar to heavy-duty models) is featured on all light-duty models. Under the hood, a new performance package available for light-duty trucks includes a Vortec 6000 V-8 and enhanced towing package, giving properly equipped models up to a 10,100-lb. towing capacity. A new Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission is available for heavy-duty models equipped with the Vortec 8100 V-8 or Duramax Diesel engines.
SSR The heritage-styled roadster pickup gets a more powerful LS2 V-8 engine rated at 400 hp with the six-speed manual transmission. Automatic-equipped models are rated at 395 hp.
Suburban The large-size people mover offers a new LTZ model that includes a Vortec 6000 V-8, standard all-wheel drive, 20-inch wheels, monochromatic exterior styling with specific grille, and a leather-appointed interior.
Trail Blazer The Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8 with displacement on demand technology is now available in all models, as well as StabiliTrak, GM's electronic stability control system. The standard Vortec 4200 six-cylinder engine gets an hp bump to 291. Other changes include an acoustic laminated windshield and additional sound insulation.
Trail Blazer SS The mid-size SUV has unique exterior styling, including 20-inch flangeless wheels. Power comes from a Corvette-derived LS2 6.0L V-8, enabling the powerful SUV to reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The Trail Blazer SS is available in two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.
Uplander The crossover van, introduced in 2005, receives enhanced dual-stage frontal air bags with passenger sensing system. A new 3900 3.9 liter V-6 becomes available later in the year.
300 Later in the model year, the five-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick will be mated to the 3.5 liter, V-6. Variable line pressure will be added to the four-speed automatic transmission, too. Passengers will also enjoy a new eight-way passenger seat with power recline as well an audio input jack for the stereo system.
300c SRT8 The souped-up version of the 300c, with 85 more hp than its Hemi sibling, gets an available 13-speaker Kicker audio system with a 322-watt amplifier and 100-watt subwoofer, available DVD system with center-mounted flip-up screen, and standard tire pressure mounting display.
Pacifica Visibility improves with larger driver's side and passenger mirrors. The crossover also features BeltAlert as standard for both front passengers. Glove box capacity increases 38 percent inside and a new AM/FM/DVD radio plays CDs, CDs with MP3 files, DVDs including audio, video or recordable formats.
PT Cruiser The retro wagon gets updated front and rear fascias, including a new front grille, new headlamps that feature a scallop along the bottom edge and new round fog lamps. A new body-color spoiler on the liftgate provides improved aerodynamics. Chrysler also pumps up the power, giving the available high-output turbo engine a boost to 230 hp, up from 220. To reduce road noise, the PT Cruiser has an all-new acoustic package, which includes improved sealing around the doors, windows, rear floor pan and reverberant cavity area, as well as increased trim panel sound absorption.
PT Cruiser Convertible The ragtop gets the same style, acoustic and engine changes as its hardtop sibling. Both also have a passenger grab handle added to the right side of the instrument panel for easier entry and exit.
Sebring A limited number of Sebring Sedan TSi vehicles will be available. It is powered by a 2.7-liter V-6 engine combined with four-speed automatic transaxle with AutoStick, a sport-tuned suspension and steering gear and four-wheel anti-lock braking with low-speed traction control. Other enhancements include accent-color 360-degree ground effects package, low-profile body-color spoiler on the deck lid, fog lamps, oversized 3-inch chrome exhaust tip, low-restriction sport-tuned exhaust, and 17-inch performance tires.
Town & Country The minivan gets an innovative loose fuel cap-warning message for the odometer display. In most vehicles, a loose fuel cap triggers the check engine warning light, which causes undue panic. The minivan also receives the same additions as the Pacifica.
Caravan & Grand Caravan The minivans get BeltAlert as standard for both front passengers as well as a new AM/FM/DVD radio that plays CDs, CDs with MP3 files, DVDs including audio, video or recordable formats. A loose fuel cap-warning message is added. The front passenger seat now gets six-way power.
Charger Introduced in early summer, the all-new four-door sedan comes with a 250 hp, 3.5-liter V-6 or the 340 hp, 5.7-liter HEMI V-8. The multi-displacement system on the HEMI deactivates four cylinders in just 40 milliseconds-quicker than a blink of an eye-when full V-8 power is not needed, improving fuel economy by up to 20 percent.
Charger SRT 8 The quickest sedan in the Dodge lineup is powered by a Street Racing Team (SRT) engineered 425 hp, 6.1 liter, HEMI V-8. Zero to 60 is estimated in the 5-second range. Benchmark stopping power of 110 feet from 60 mph is delivered by four-piston Brembo calipers with 260 x 33 mm rotors up front and 350 x 26 mm vented rear rotors.
Dakota All new in 2005, the mid-size pickup expands its 2006 lineup with four new high-performance models: TRX and TRX4 Off-Road, R/T and Night Runner. The TRX and TRX4 Off-Road model feature all-new 16-inch aluminum wheels, tow hooks, and off-road tires. The TRX4 Off-Road also has additional features such as a four-wheel-drive transfer case, a 1-inch increased ride height, anti-spin differential, axle ratio upgrade, skid plates, heavy-duty cooling system and a 750-amp battery. The R/T features a 260-hp 4.7-liter High Output V-8 and 17-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels as standard equipment. The Night Runner offers a blacked-out color theme including a unique black chrome grille and black 17-inch chrome wheels.
Durango The full size SUV receives Chrysler's electronic stability program. The Durango also will offer power rear liftgate, a three-passenger third-row seat, remote start, and standard 17-inch aluminum wheels.
Magnum The SE has a 2.7-liter, V-6 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission that features variable line pressure to reflect the pressure necessary for maximum efficiency to provide enhanced fuel economy. Magnum comes with an entertainment system with the unique feature that the vehicle speakers can play audio from a disc in the DVD player, while the rear-seat passengers can listen to audio from the satellite radio, AM or FM or a CD on the headphones.
Magnum SRT8 As Dodge says, this station wagon can haul from 0-60 in the low 5-second range and haul home a 27-inch television. Power comes from a 425-hp, 6.1-liter HEMI engine. For added stability and aerodynamic benefit, the ride height of the SRT8 is one-half inch lower than the Magnum, while the electronic stability program has been specially tuned for performance handling.
Ram 1500 It is the first pickup with the fuel saving multi-displacement system. The available 5.7-liter, HEMI V-8 can transition from eight cylinders when all eight aren't needed. Drivers will experience fuel economy gains of up to 20 percent under various driving conditions. The pickup also features a standard electronic transfer case and front-axle-disconnect system on four-wheel-drive models, and new larger headlamps, power sliding rear window, and bucket seats.
Ram 2500/3500 Large, angular headlamp modules use halogen bulbs to provide 22 percent more light intensity and 40 percent improved beam spectrum than the previous Ram. The full-size pickup features a new fully chrome, ingot-like grille over a massive front bumper. The interior has also gone through extensive redesign for more passenger comfort.
Ram Mega Cab The all-new Ram Mega Cab's 145.2 cu. ft. of interior space includes the first reclining rear seats available in a pickup truck, tilting back from a 22 to 37 degree seatback angle. The rear-passenger area offers leg room of 44.2 inches and the rear seats also split 60/40, fold down and move forward, providing numerous configurations for interior cargo capacity and flexibility. Extra space comes from replacing the previous eight-foot bed with a six-foot, three-inch bed.
Ram SRT10 With a new-for-2006 hydroformed, fully boxed frame and new interior and exterior designs, the SRT10 combines performance with convenience and utility. The 8.3 liter V-10 Viper engine, unleashing 500 hp and 525 lb.-ft. of torque, is under the hood. A quad cab is also available that has a super-duty four-speed automatic transmission tweaked to provide optimum performance with an 8,150 lb. towing capacity.
Viper SRT10 Coupe Previously offered only as a convertible, the Viper now comes as a coupe. It has a unique "double-bubble" roof, special windshield surround, door side glass, rear fascia, quarter panels and wrap-around tail lamps. The coupe is designed for increased downforce and high-speed stability, with a sloping roofline and decklid spoiler.
F150 Limited-edition Harley-Davidson Package will offer monotone black exterior, 22-inch polished forged aluminum wheels, interior with high-gloss Piano Black detail, black aniline leather seating surfaces and chrome details. Customers can choose between 4x2 or all-wheel drive - a first for any
F-150. Later in the model year, SuperCrew becomes available with 6.5-foot cargo box, and a flexible-fuel 5.4-liter Triton V-8 will be offered. Plus a new luxury package will be available on the FX4.
E Series AdvanceTrac with roll stability control is now standard on 12- and 15-passenger E-350 Super Duty Extended Length Wagons. Slim-line engine cover console now standard on all models. Electronically controlled 4R75E transmission is standard on van and wagon models.
Explorer The new optional three-valve 4.6-liter SOHC V-8 delivers 292 hp (53 more hp than the two-valve 4.6-liter previously used) and 300 lb. ft. of torque for the world's best selling SUV 15 years straight. V-8 4x4 models are expected to deliver up to 10 percent improvement in fuel economy, in addition to 53 more hp. The standard 4.0-liter SOHC V-6 engine's idle quality was improved by 50 percent with a new camshaft and spark plugs. New engine calibrations and improved emission controls cut smog-forming emissions by 74 percent. Among the new safety features are advanced restraints module and dual front crash sensors, five-level front passenger sensors, adaptive air bag venting, adaptive stroking steering column and front-seat side air bags.
Freestar The minivan has redesigned front door panels and interior trim changes. Speed control, CD player, roof rails, tire-pressure monitoring and other features become standard.
Fusion Inspired by the 427 concept, this mid-size sedan's styling includes a bold three-bar grille and multi-element projector-beam headlamps. Two engine choices are offered: the 2.3-liter Duratec 23 I-4 or 3.0-liter Duratec 30 V-6. Both feature all-aluminum construction, dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, intake Variable Cam Timing (i-VCT) and electronic throttle control. The four-cylinder engine delivers 160 hp, and can be paired with a five-speed manual or automatic transaxle. The 221-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 is paired with an advanced six-speed automatic transaxle. In fall 2006, an all-wheel drive version will be offered.
Mustang A new "Pony Package" offers Mustang V-6 customers a GT-inspired suspension with larger wheels and tires, ABS and traction control, and custom grille with fog lamps.
Ranger Design changes to the compact pickup truck include revised bumper colors, horizontal grille insert, fender flares, clear-lens parking lamps, new tail lamps and fog lamps and a 9-inch Ford oval on the grille and tailgate. The Ranger Edge is now known as the Ranger Sport.
Sierra The Sierra Heavy-Duty lineup is bolstered with the Allison 1000 Series transmission, which grows from a five-speed automatic to a first-in-class six-speed. Sierra's versatility also expands with new models, including an extended cab with short-length cargo box and new base-model 1500 SL Crew Cab models that carry a lower MSRP than previous models.
Canyon The pickup gets GM's passenger sensing system to automatically turn the front passenger air bag on or off when no occupant or a small occupant is detected. Canyon also gets the new, available ZQ8 sport suspension for better ride and handling.
Envoy GM's StabiliTrak electronic stability control system becomes standard across the mid-size SUV line. On the power train front, GM's displacement on demand cylinder deactivation engine technology is now standard with 5.3L V-8 engines on long and short wheelbase models.
Yukon A tire pressure monitoring system is now standard across the line, including all three-quarter-ton models. Yukon and Yukon XL models may be equipped with a Flex Fuel 5.3L V-8 engine, which can operate on fuel that contains up to 85 percent ethanol. The Flex Fuel system helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and is a clean, renewable resource that benefits farmers, since it's derived from corn.
Accord The 3.0-liter VTEC V-6 engine's output increases to 244 hp; new engine features include drive-by-wire throttle control and high performance intake and exhaust valve timing. The 2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine's output increases to 166 hp. The hybrid's 3.0-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine with Integrated Motor Assist gets output of 253 hp. New exterior styling on the sedan and coupe includes new front bumper and grille design, rear bumper and trunk lid design with integrated third brake light, LED taillights, and new exhaust finishers.
Civic The eighth-generation Civic line will feature three all-new engines with greater performance and efficiency. Multiple powertrains range from 197-hp high performance to a 51-mpg gas-sipping hybrid. Safety features include standard 4-channel advanced logic ABS with electronic brake distribution. Drive-by-wire throttle control will be standard on all models.
CRV Performance is enhanced in this entry-level SUV with the 2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine delivering 156-hp and 156 lb-ft. of torque.
FCX Featuring an all-new Honda developed fuel cell stack, Honda FCX adds a Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System that contains locations for all existing hydrogen-fueling stations within its database. The FCX is the first fuel cell vehicle to be placed in the hands of an individual retail consumer.
Odyssey The 3.5-liter VTEC V-6 engine (244 hp and 240 lb-ft. of torque) has been added to the LX, Touring, EX, & EX-L models. The minivan, which was completely redesigned for 2005, has tether anchors added to the third row seats.
Pilot For the first time, an all-new two-wheel drive version featuring Honda's variable cylinder management system will be part of this SUV's line-up. All Pilots have standard three-row curtain airbags on all trim levels, as well as revised taillight and headlight designs.
Ridgeline Introduced in March, the mid-size Ridgeline introduces a number of features to the half-ton truck segment including a secure, lockable in-bed trunk with room to store a 72-quart cooler, three sets of golf bags or other bulky items under the pickup bed; a dual action tailgate that allows for easy loading and unloading of the in-bed trunk and truck bed; and the segment's first fully independent four-wheel suspension.
S2000 The two-seat convertible adds electronic drive-by-wire throttle control and vehicle stability assist. The 2.2-liter VTEC 4-cylinder engine produces 237 hp.
H1 Alpha The H1 Alpha is the first of the brand's performance series. The Duramax 6600 delivers 300 hp, a 46-percent increase over previous H1s equipped with the 6.5L Optimizer Turbo-Diesel. Peak torque is 520 lb.-ft., an 18-percent increase. On the road, the new powertrain offers better acceleration. Zero-to-60 times improve by three seconds to 13.5.
H3 Powered by the Vortec 3500 engine with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing, the H3, introduced this year, is projected to reach fuel economy of up to 20 mpg. It delivers 220 hp and 225 lb.-ft. of torque. It is the first HUMMER to offer the choice of a five-speed manual or a Hydra-Matic 4L60-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission.
Accent Its new 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) delivers 110 hp and 107 lb.-ft. of torque. It comes teamed with a 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic including overdrive with lock-up torque converter for higher fuel economy. All Accents are equipped with ABS with electronic brake force distribution and six airbags.
Azera Hyundai's flagship sedan in the U.S. replaces the XG350. The Azera offers an extensive list of standard equipment including a 265 hp, 3.8-liter DOHC V-6 engine with a Variable Intake System; five-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic; and 16-inch alloy wheels. Safety features include ABS with electronic brake force distribution and electronic stability control with traction control system, eight airbags and front active head restraints
Sonata Newly redesigned, either a 162-hp 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve CVVT four-cylinder engine or a 235-hp 3.3-liter DOHC 24-valve CVVT V-6 powers the mid-size sedan. All are equipped with ABS with electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control with traction control system, six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes, and active front head restraints. Additional features include AM/FM/CD/MP3 player with six speakers; cruise control; air conditioning and a cabin air filter.
FX The SUV gets an exterior facelift with new grille, bumper, and wheel design. In addition, all FX models add standard features including a 300-watt Bose audio system, rear view monitor, and advanced air bag system. It also receives a new center console design and electroluminescent gauges.
G35 The coupe adds new bi-xenon headlights and revised taillights.
M Introduced earlier this year, enthusiasts can choose between the M35, a 3.5-liter, six-cylinder engine with 280 hp, and the M45, a 4.5-liter V8 with 335 hp. Both are mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with short-throw performance shifter, manual shift mode and Rev Matching. The sport model features the rear active steer system, which helps improve vehicle-handling performance by adjusting the rear suspension geometry according to steering input and vehicle speed.
Q45 The flagship luxury sedan, the Q45, has been refined with a new sport model with rear active steer, revised transmission, and available lane departure warning system.
QX56 The SUV sees the addition of power folding outside mirrors with heat, power adjust and turn signal. Also added are a 60/40 split third row seat and a sound system with ability to play MP3 CDs.
XK The all-new 2+2 sports coupe and convertible go on sale next spring as a 2007 model. The all-aluminum construction forms a lightweight, stiff and strong car (31 percent stiffer than the previous generation steel-bodied XK). Technologies include a new sequential shift six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddles for manual gear changes, keyless entry, push button start and active lighting. It will be launched with latest generation naturally aspirated 4.2-liter Jaguar 'AJ-V-8' engine, developing 300 hp. Its announced 0-60 time is 5.9 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
Super V8 Portfolio The limited edition sedan (only 400 will be built) builds on the XJ Long Wheelbase's lightweight, dynamic performance, spaciousness and sporty handling. Mechanically, the Super V8 Portfolio has the power and refinement of Jaguar's supercharged 4.2-liter AJ-V8 400 hp engine. A six-speed ZF automatic transmission takes drive to the rear wheels. Performance runs to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, and 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds.
Commander The first Jeep with three rows of seats, the Commander comes with three engine choices: 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, 4.7-liter SOHC V-8 and a 3.7-liter SOHC V-6. The engines range from 330 hp down to 210. Three four-wheel drive systems are also available. An electronic stability program and five-speed automatic transmission are standard. An off-road group is available that includes a stamped-steel transfer case skid plate that mounts to the transmission crossmember and a fuel tank skid plate that provides off-road protection to the transfer case.
Grand Cherokee All new in 2005, for 2006 the Grand Cherokee expands the lineup with the Grand Cherokee Overland. New standard features include the electronic stability program and one-touch up/down front door windows. An off-road package is now available with the 3.7-liter SOHC V-6.
Grand Cherokee SRT8 Powered by a 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 producing 420 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, which adds 90 more horses and 25 percent more power than the 5.7-liter HEMI-equipped Grand Cherokee, the all-new Grand Cherokee SRT8's performance includes 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds and 60-0 mph braking distance of less than 125 feet. A special drive system was developed to handle the first SRT vehicle with full-time, four-wheel drive.
Liberty The mid-size SUV adds electronic stability as standard.
Amanti The upscale sedan adds leather seats, heated front seats, auto-dimming rear view mirror with Homelink, and sunroof as standard features.
Rio The sub-compact sedan and hatchback are all new for 2006. Mechanically they feature an all-new, 110 hp, 1.6 liter, DOHC, continuous variable valve timing I-4 engine. They also come standard with six airbags.
Sedona The popular minivan gets revamped for 2006. It has a more powerful new 240 hp, 3.8-liter, aluminum V-6 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Power operated side doors and hatch, as well as fold-flat third-row seats, will be standard.
Spectra The compact sedan gets a lighter weight, more durable, automatic four-speed transmission, but it won't be available on the super ultra-low emission vehicles sold in California, Massachusetts, Maine, New York and Vermont.
LR3 The mid-size SUV, introduced as a 2005 model, adds a V-6 engine that produces 216 hp to its lineup.
Range Rover The full-size luxury SUV receives two new V-8s: a supercharged 4.2 liter, 400 hp model or a naturally aspirated 4.4 liter with 305 hp. Sound-dampening elements have been added. It also receives a new front bumper design, new headlamps and taillights, a new front grille and revised power vents, in addition to a rear view camera.
Range Rover Sport Introduced in 2005, the Sport unites Range Rover styling with more sports oriented driving. It comes with a supercharged 4.2 liter, 390 hp V-8 or naturally aspirated 4.4 liter V-8 with 300 hp. It has a six-speed automatic gearbox with CommandShift and four-corner independent, height-adjustable electronic air suspension.
GS 450h The rear-wheel drive hybrid luxury sedan is targeted to go on sale in the spring. It will feature a 3.5-liter, V-6 and high-output electric motor with 300 hp. Claimed mpg is more than 25 mpg and 0-60 is also expected to be around six seconds.
IS 250/350 All new exterior styling. The sedan is 3.5 inches longer with a 2.4-inch longer wheelbase and is 3 inches wider. All wheel drive is newly available on the IS250 with a new 2.5-liter V6 with 200 plus hp and 3.5 liter with more than 300 hp. The IS250 gets a new 6-speed manual transmission and a six-speed sequential shift automatic with steering wheel paddle shifters is available.
LX 470 The SUV gets a revised engine that adds VVT-i with 40 more hp to 275. It also gets an upgraded emission certification to ULEV. The LX470 also gets restyled rear combination lamps.
SC 430 Revised exterior styling for the hardtop convertible includes standard adaptive front lighting system, revised front grille and bumper, and new LED taillights. The 4.3-liter V8 gets mated to a new six-speed sequential-shift automatic transmission for improved acceleration.

Zephyr A mid-size, five-passenger sedan that is aimed at younger buyers to get them into the Lincoln fold. One of five new Lincolns over four years, it features the Duratec 30 V-6 with 221 hp and a six-speed automatic transmission. Rear passengers get more than three feet of legroom. The Zephyr features a large 15.8-cubic foot trunk. Safety features include standard driver and front passenger air bags and seat-deployed side air bags for torso protection. A full-length safety curtain provides enhanced head-protection coverage over the length of the window glass area. Carryover: LS, Mark LT, Navigator, Town Car

Grand Marquis A new grille, front fascia and headlamps update Grand Marquis with a Mercury face; the trunk appliqué is also restyled.
Mercury Mariner Hybrid Initially planned as a 2007 model, it was pulled ahead one year in response to growing interest. It shares the same advanced technology that earned Ford Escape Hybrid the 2005 North American Truck of the Year Award. It gets an estimated 33-mpg city and 29 mpg highway.
Milan The all-new Milan is five-passenger mid-size sedan. It is Mercury's new entry point and first vehicle in this segment in a decade. Either a 160-hp PZEV Duratec 23 I-4 or 221-hp Duratec 30 V-6 powers it. Milan rides on a short- and long-arm front suspension that features double ball-joint lower control arms and coil-over shocks. The multi-link rear suspension performs like a double-wishbone setup. In about a year, Milan's powertrain offerings will expand with the availability of all-wheel drive. In 2008, Milan will become Mercury's second full-hybrid vehicle.
Mountaineer The mid-size SUV receives a new three-valve 292 hp, 4.6-liter V-8 with six-speed automatic. Ride and handling is further improved with a revised suspension and a suite of noise, vibration and harshness prevention and countermeasures. Deployable power running boards are integrated into rocker panels.
MX-5 Miata The all-new MX-5 is the first total redesign of the Miata since its 1989 launch. The MX-5, as it is known in the rest of the world, has grown with additional hip, shoulder and elbowroom. A 2.0-liter, 170-hp engine powers the two-seater. Three transmissions are available: five-speed manual, six-speed manual and six-speed Sport AT automatic.
Mazda3 The four-door model adds variable valve timing to the 2.0-liter engine, increasing power to 150-hp (or 145-hp PZEV-rated) while increasing fuel economy.
Mazda5 Positioned between a station wagon and a minivan, the Mazda5 is a three-row, six-passenger vehicle powered by an all-aluminum 157-hp, 2.3-liter, four-cylinder MZR series engine with sequential valve timing. Transmission options are a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic with manual shift mode. The large sliding doors and low floor allow for fluid ingress and egress, and a one-touch walk-in mechanism offers easy access to the third-row seats. All Mazda5s have a fully independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and side airbags and full three-row side air curtains.
Mazda6 All models get new front and rear fascias, as well as new side sills and a sport grille. The V-6 models have been modified to improve exhaust emissions, now producing 215 hp.
MazdaSpeed6 This is Mazda's fastest accelerating and most advanced sedan. At its core is the MZR 2.3 liter, 274 hp, aluminum I-4 direct injection spark ignition turbo engine. Taking advantage of the inherent cooling and efficiency of direct gasoline injection, it also has a fast-spooling single-scroll turbo to supply up to 15 psi of boost, resulting in 280 lb-ft of torque at only 3000 rpm.
RX-8 The 2006 model IS a late launch, seeing horsepower increases and some minor updates.
C All-sedan lineup features a range of new four-valve, twin-cam V6 engines: 201-hp 2.5-liter V6 in the C230, 228-hp 3.0-liter for the C280 and 268-hp 3.5-liter in the C350. Active front head restraints are standard on entire C-Class line.
CL AMG Sport package is now standard on CL500 and CL600.
CLK The coupes and cabriolets get a new grille and redesigned taillights. Active front head restraints become standard across the line. CLK320 is replaced by CLK350 with 3.5-liter, 268-hp four-valve V6 and seven-speed automatic. The CLK 500 gets an AMG exhaust.
CLS The CLS500 has a 302-hp 5.0-liter V8, while the CLS55 AMG is powered by a supercharged 5.5-liter V8 that makes 469 hp and 516 lb.-ft of torque for 0-to-60 mph acceleration times of 4.5 seconds. The four-door sedan, with the lines of a two-seat coupe, has new active front head restraints standard for both CLS models
E The new E350 comes in both sedan and wagon form. A new-generation 268 hp 3.5-liter V6 engine powers it. The E350 comes equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission that improves acceleration from 0 to 60 mph by up to 0.3 seconds. An AMG Sport package is available for the rear-wheel drive E350 and E500 sedans as well as the rear-wheel drive E350 wagon.
G The military-looking SUV has softer lines in the 2006 model.
M The luxury SUV has made great improvements in handling and performance. It comes in two models, the 268-hp, 3.5-liter, V6 ML350, and the 302-hp, 5.0 liter, V8 ML500. Both are mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission with direct select column mounted shifter.
R The luxury wagon features six individual seats in three rows. It has two versions: the 268 hp twin-cam V-6 R350 and the 302-hp single cam V-8 R500. Both are mated to a seven-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive. The R class comes standard with two-stage adaptive air bags for the driver and front passenger, window curtain air bags that span all three rows and belt tensioners and belt force limiters. A rollover sensor can deploy the belt tensioners and the curtain air bags if the vehicle senses an imminent rollover. The cooling system features nine sensors, including a pollutant sensor that can automatically switch to the recirculation mode if it senses high CO or nitrogen oxides in the fresh air inlet.
S The new rear-wheel drive S-Class arrives early in 2006 as a 2007 model. It is longer and wider than its predecessor. The S500 will be powered by Mercedes next generation 382 hp V-8, which features increased displacement; four-valve-per-cylinder technology, variable valve timing and a lightweight crank assembly. The S600 version gets 510 hp. Both will use the same driver-adaptive seven-speed automatic in the 2006 M Class. The new 2006 S65 AMG model with 604-hp V12 is claimed by Mercedes to be the world's quickest four-door at 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
SLK New SLK280 features a 3.0-liter, 228 hp version of the new twin-cam V-6.
MINI makes the popular John Cooper Works performance upgrade available as a factory-installed option. In addition to the engine performance upgrade, the installation adds the sport brake kit and a limited-slip differential.
Eclipse This all-new, fourth generation coupe boasts more power with the 3.8 liter, MIVEC 24-valve, 6-cylinder engine with 263 hp. (It also has a 2.4 liter SOHC MIVEC 16-valve 4 cylinder engine.) It is longer, wider, roomier, more refined, faster, safer and better equipped than the prior generation. ABS with electronic brake force distribution is standard as well as an advanced dual front air bags supplemental restraint system.
Endeavor Changes include a new bumper, chin spoiler and front grille. Rear alterations include a new bumper, step cover and bumper extensions.
Lancer A front fascia change and safety upgrades are offered. Two distinctive front grilles further define the dual personality of the Lancer. The ES receives a chrome grille design while the OZ and Ralliart implement a sporty, black mesh grille. A refined front bumper complements both designs. Advanced air bags become standard equipment.
Lancer Evolution The new Lancer Evolution IX offers more performance, 286 hp, from the 2.0 liter DOHC 16-valve, 4 cylinder-intercooled turbo engine by way of Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and lift Electronic Control (MIVEC). It also gets a restyled fascia including front bumper, grille, and smoked front and rear lamp bezels. Interior enhancements include upgraded Recaro sport seats featuring all-new Alcantara fabric with leather seat bolster and blackout cockpit coloring with carbon-style accents.
Outlander ABS and seat-mounted side-impact airbags are now standard on all models.
Raider For the first time, Mitsubishi introduces a mid-size pickup. Called the Raider it will come standard with a 210 hp, 3.7 liter, V6. A more powerful 4.7-liter V8, with 230 hp, will also be available. All trim lines and engines are available in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The V8 will be capable of towing up to 6500 lbs.
350Z Manual transmission models get 300 hp. Non-Brembo brakes get increased brake rotor size. Vehicle speed sensitive power steering is added and the front bumper, headlights and grille get revised. Rear LED brake lights and standard bi-xenon headlights are new and 18-inch cast wheels become standard.
Armada Enhancements include standard automatic dual-zone air conditioning; standard 60/40 split fold-flat third row seat; and an audio system with the ability to play mp3 formatted CDs.
Murano The crossover SUV gets a new wheel design and restyled front grille. Chrome accent lower front bumper and brushed aluminum rear bumper protectors are added. Also new are LED rear combination lamps and enhanced driver instrumentation to improve both daytime and nighttime visibility. Steering wheel controls get illuminated and the audio system adds the ability to play mp3 CDs.
A new base four-cylinder sedan and GTP performance models of the sedan, coupe and convertible complement G6 two new body styles, including a sleek coupe and hardtop convertible. The convertible features a retractable hardtop and seating for four. GTP models feature a new 3.9-liter V-6 rated at 240 hp for the sedan and coupe, and 227 hp for the convertible. It is matched with a standard four-speed automatic with manual shift control or an available six-speed manual transmission. The new four-cylinder, high-output engine is rated at 165 hp.
Solstice There is a lot excitement surrounding the new sports car. It has a unique body structure that was designed for responsive handling - and an easy-to-operate folding top that stows behind the seats. The Solstice features a 177 hp, Ecotec 2.4 liter engine and is matched to a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission. The driver-oriented cockpit interior features motorcycle-inspired instruments.
Torrent The new compact SUV has a multi-purpose interior, including a rear seat that adjusts fore and aft, as well as reclines. A 185-hp 3400 V-6 is standard and is matched to a five-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models are available.
GTO The sports car is distinguished by revised tail lamp styling, which features a black background instead of red.
Montana SV6 The minivan has side-impact air bags available for first- and second-row outboard passengers. Later in the year, a 3.9-liter V-6 becomes available.
911 Carrera Two front-wheel drive models are available: the 4 and 4S. The 911 Carrera 4 gets a 321-hp, 3.6-liter DOHC 24-valve flat 6 engine and the 350-hp, 3.8-liter DOHC flat 6 goes in the 4S. Zero to 60 times are estimated between 4.5-4.8 seconds. Both engines can be had with a six-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic automatic, and both offer the option of Porsche's ceramic composite brakes. The C4S has Porsche's active suspension system (PASM) as standard equipment.
Boxster Changes are about a different kind of performance. The Porsche Communication Management System can now accept MP3 encoded CDs. The passenger seat features weight sensors that switch off the passenger front airbag when child seats are detected.
Cayenne New remote key with three buttons (one to unlock the vehicle, one to lock the vehicle and one to open the rear hatch/window) for the SUV. Also, every Cayenne comes equipped with full-size airbags for both front occupants. Both front airbags use an organic-based propellant that not only makes them lighter and more compact, but easier to recycle. The passenger seat also features sensors that switch off the passenger airbag when child seats are detected.
Cayman Based on the Boxster series, the two-seat coupe incorporates new styling, a 295 hp engine mated to six-speed manual transmission that has been enhanced with shortened and more precise shift travel, and features and options made popular by Porsche's current sports cars. It is positioned and priced between the 911 Carrera and Boxster S. The 3.4-liter, flat-six cylinder engine propels the car from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and to a top speed of 171 mph.
9-3 The 9-3 SportCombi, launching in late 2005, takes Saab into the premium midsize wagon segment. It features an all-new turbocharged aluminum 250 hp V-6. A six-speed manual comes standard and a six-speed automatic with steering wheel controls is available.
9-7X Forging into a market previously untapped by Saab, the five-passenger 9-7X brings the brand to the growing mid-luxury SUV segment. Available with a 290-hp inline six-cylinder or 300-hp V-8 engine with displacement on demand technology, all models feature standard all-wheel drive.
9-2X The next generation is based on the re-engineered Subaru Impreza to be introduced later in the model year.
9-5 The sedan and wagon is re-engineered and restyled on the Epsilon 2 platform.
Ion An enhanced performance package is available on Ion 3 models. It features a new 170 hp, 2.4 liter Ecotec inline four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing. The package also includes suspension modifications. The flow of hydraulic fluid within the suspension struts is modified to provide more resistance and the stabilizer bar diameter is increased for a firmer ride and reduced body lean. A redesigned center console/center stack provides additional leg and knee clearance.
Relay The 7-passenger Relay receives additional safety enhancements, including available first- and second-row seat-mounted side air bags that provide additional head and thorax protection. Later this year, customers can choose a more powerful 3.9L V-6 on the Relay 3 FWD, delivering 235 hp. It uses variable valve timing and active intake technology.
Sky Early in 2006, the roadster will hit showrooms as a 2007 model. The two-seat, rear-drive roadster features aggressive styling with a strong front end, pronounced fender peaks and a prominent chrome bar that carries an integrated Saturn badge.
Vue The SUV gets new front and rear fascias with an integrated step pad; and new headlamps, hood and grille. Inside, enhancements include new seats, wood finish and chrome accents, a new center stack and a redesigned center console.
xA The sedan gets new upper/lower honeycomb grille and redesigned lower air intake, headlamps and tail lamps, color-keyed rocker panel and lower bumper, and outside mirrors with turn signal. It also gets a new steering wheel with audio controls.
xB The funky little box gets a new audio head unit with volume knob that is shared with xA and tC. A universal mini-jack connector for portable music player is added to the center console with the audio system used as speakers only.
tC The coupe gets a new steering wheel with audio controls and a new audio head unit.
B9 Tribeca The brand's first 7-passenger vehicle (choice of 5- or 7-passenger seating) comes with a 250-hp, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder Boxer engine teamed to 5-speed adaptive automatic transmission. It has the variable torque distribution version of symmetrical all-wheel drive combined with vehicle dynamics control stability system and four-wheel traction control system. Safety features include advanced airbag system with dual-stage deployment; front seat side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags.
Forester In naturally aspirated models horsepower increases from 165 to 173 due mainly to a new i-active variable valve lift system; with turbo engine, horsepower jumps to 230. Retuned suspension and improved braking feel; ground clearance increased to 8.1 inches (7.9 inches for 2.5 XT Limited). Available 4-speed electronic automatic transmission gains revised adaptive shift control; revised all-wheel drive logic control improves responsiveness and traction performance in models with automatic transmission.
Impreza All models get more power. A new 230-hp, 2.5-liter intercooled turbo engine features active valve control system variable valve timing for stronger torque and better performance with available automatic transmission; naturally aspirated models feature new i-active valve lift system with 173 horsepower. Dual-stage advanced frontal airbag system and front seat head/chest airbags are now standard.
Legacy Horsepower in naturally aspirated models is increased to 175 due mainly to new i-active variable valve lift system. Air filtration is standard on all models.
Outback Horsepower in naturally aspirated four-cylinder models (2.5 i and 2.5 i Limited) is increased to 175 due mainly to new i-active variable valve lift system. Engine immobilizer security feature becomes standard.

Forenza Both models have a fresh front fascia design that incorporates a new Suzuki grille, new multireflector headlamps and available fog lamps.

Camry Solara The coupe and convertible get five-speed sequential automatic ECT-i on all four-cylinder models.
Corolla Matrix 1-ZZ-FE engine 4WD models comply with LEV II evaporator emissions and OBD O2 sensor monitor refined.
FJ Cruiser Based on the 4Runner platform, this retro-style SUV, reminiscent of the original FJ 40 Land Cruiser, has a 245 hp, 4.0 liter V-6. Stability control and traction control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and emergency brake assist are standard. Side and head curtain airbags are optional. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission on both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations and an available six-speed manual on 4x4 models.
Highlander Hybrid The first seven-passenger hybrid went on sale in June. It combines a 3.3-liter V6 engine with a high-torque electric drive motor-generator to deliver V-8-like performance. It gets rapid acceleration with a 0-60 mph time of just 7.3 seconds for the electric four-wheel-drive with intelligence. The front-wheel drive model's combined city/highway estimated EPA fuel efficiency rating of 30 mpg exceeds most V8 powered SUV's by more than 100 percent and is better than the current EPA average - 27.6 mpg - for a compact four-cylinder sedan.
Land Cruiser There's a new front fascia (head lamps, grille) and new rear fascia (tail lamps, LED type). Inside, an updated instrument cluster with new tire pressure management system warning lamp, and updated tachometer red zone are added.
Prius The hybrid gets new front and rear lamp design and chrome grille as well as an optional leather interior with leather-wrapped steering wheel. It also receives advanced airbags.
RAV4 The completely restyled and reengineered third generation RAV4 features significantly improved performance and a larger, more refined and modern interior when it goes on sale in the spring.
Sienna It gets a redesigned front fascia (grille, fog lights, and headlamps), redesigned rear lamps and the addition of color key sonar.
Yaris This replacement for the Echo will be Toyota's least expensive car. It will go on sale in the spring as a 2007 model.
Eos The hardtop convertible will come to the United States some time after the spring of 2006. Four gas engines will be offered either as four-cylinder direct-injection or a V6 model. In addition, a turbo diesel engine will be available. One unusual feature of the convertible top will be its integrated glass/sliding/tilting roof because, as VW explains, the sun doesn't always shine, nor is it always summer.
Golf The new design is longer, wider and taller than the previous version resulting in more rear leg- and headroom as well as additional cargo capacity. Both two- and four-door versions are offered in three trim levels. The GTI version debuted in the fall, while the standard Golf models follow in the spring.
GTI Like all Jettas launched in 2005, the GLI is the product of a complete redesign and is bigger than previous models in nearly every dimension. It gets the new 2.0 T turbocharged 200 hp, four-cylinder engine. With a standard six-speed manual transmission, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. Standard equipment includes: auto-leveling, high intensity gas-discharge Xenon headlights, electronic stabilization program and four-wheel independent suspension.
Passat The mid-size sedan gets its most powerful engine ever, a 280-hp 3.6 liter narrow angle six cylinder. It propels the Passat from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. The base engine is upgraded to a new four-cylinder power plant with turbocharger and intercooler called the 2.0T. Later in the model year, Volkswagen will again offer a wagon version. Both will then later offer an all-wheel-drive option. Handling is improved with static torsion stiffness 57 percent higher than its predecessor.
C70 While keeping the large car label, the convertible is redesigned and shifted to the S40 platform. A retractable hardtop replaces the ragtop, having a much larger glass rear window.
S40 The six-speed manual transmission gains "pushdown" function to engage reverse. The rear seat belt reminder is now activated by any seat belt and the steering wheels get standard audio controls.
S60 All models are turbocharged. New all-wheel drive with instant traction is standard on the S60 2.5T AWD. It mates with the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine for positive, instantaneous torque. The improved, computer controlled all-wheel-drive system instantly delivers up to 50 percent more torque to the rear axle only when needed, such as during takeoff. The R version gets the same system.
S80 The S80 2.5T and 2.5T AWD are fitted with standard leather seating surfaces, power glass moon roof, real wood inlays, a wood-trimmed steering wheel and power passenger's seat. Also included are standard T6 style front and rear sport seats, and "watch dial" instrumentation. The S60 2.5T all-wheel drive with instant traction is also standard on the similar S80 model.

XC70 New All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction made its debut on the larger XC90 V8 model in mid-2005. Now, it mates with the XC70's 2.5-liter turbocharged engine for positive, instantaneous torque. The improved, computer-controlled Haldex all-wheel-drive system delivers up to 50 percent more torque to the rear axle only when needed.
XC90 Making its debut in mid-2005, the XC90 V8 became the most powerful model in Volvo's history. The transversely mounted, compact V8 was tailor-made for the XC90 using a 60-degree "V" configuration. It displaces 4.4-liters and features 32 valves and continuously variable intake and exhaust valve timing. The naturally aspirated V8 develops 311 hp. It is also the first V8 to meet the stringent ULEV II emissions standards.
