Clever alias, Whitey Bulger!
When I heard that James "Whitey" Bulger and Catherine Greig were living under the aliases Charles and Carol Gasko in Santa Monica, Calif., I thought their name choice curious.
Carol is the female version of Charles. I wondered, Were their egos so bonded? Were they that uncreative in coming up with new names? But then I looked up the meaning of Charles/Carol on several sites that list the meanings of common first names.

Charles, Carol and its other variants means "free man."
Random choice? Coincidence? Or was this Whitey's inside joke?
The couple's Santa Monica neighbor down the hall was writer Seth Rosenzweig. His apartment directory listing is Rosenzweig and Fein, which so happens to be the last names of two New York City gangsters in the 1920s. Early news reports mistakenly stated that Rosenzweig and Fein were Bulger's and Grieg's aliases.
So far, though, no one else in the media has picked up on the "free man" meaning.
