Michele Bachmann's comments that God caused the east coast earthquake and Hurricane Irene to punish America for our debt may be a first of any notable evangelical pol. Major American religious figures, usually evangelical Protestants, have attributed natural disasters to social issues like gay marriage and abortion but I can't recall any chalking them up to fiscal matters.

These comments are a great example of Bachmann throwing red meat to the conservative voters she desperately needs to win in more religious states like Iowa and Florida. Since when has God been known to invoke his wrath upon America due to fiscal matters anyway? It is always hot button social issues never the offensive size of our federal government that motivates religious voters. It is unlikely this is anything more than one evangelical spouting off as the focus of the Christian Right continues to be social issues.
