Early voting may tip the scales in Florida
SAINT AUGUSTINE, FLA - It has only been around since 2004 but early voting has quickly ingrained itself in Florida's political culture. We are still four days away from the formal election day but people have been voting here since Saturday. According to Florida polling officials more than 10% of registered voters have already cast their ballots in the Republican primary.
With the day-to-day dynamics of this race so volatile it is hard to project how early voting will impact the race. There are few reliable poll available on early voters so it is anyone's guess as to how they are altering the race. Based on the handful of early voters I talked to today they were firmly in the camps of their choice and did not sound like they were going to change their minds by Tuesday.
The early voters differed on who they voted for but all were strongly supportive of early voting and the voter reform laws Florida has enacted since 2000. Even though Florida has stringent voter identification laws they have created a friendly environment for voters with early voting. It allows voters to vote up to eight days before an election but no later than two days before it.
