    Opening line lyrics...

What are some of the best opening-line(s) lyrics in rock and roll?

    Here are a few suggestions:

“The screen door slams, Mary’s dress sways/
Like a vision she dances across the floor as the radio plays
    (Springsteen, “Thunder Road”).

“Woke up the morning with a wine glass in my hand/

Whose wine? What wine?Where the hell did I dine?”

(Peter Frampton, “Do You Feel Like We Do”).

“Grandpa pissed his pants again, he don’t give a damn/
Brother Billy’s got both guns drawn/He ain’t been right since Vietnam.”
(Warren Zevon, “Play It All Night Long”).

“Once upon a time you dressed so fine/

Threw the bums a dime in your prime ... didn’t you?”

(Robert Zimmerman, “Like A Rolling Stone.”)

“Your day breaks, your mind aches/
You find that all her words of kindness linger on when she no longer needs you”
    (The Beatles, “For No One”).

    Any other suggestions?

Cool idea, Lloyd and some great picks so far.  I had this Pogues song, Fairytale of New York, in mind before leafswin mentioned them.  The start of this song always gets me.

    It was Christmas Eve, babe
    In the drunk tank
An old man said to me
    'Won't see another one'
And then they sang a song
    The rare old mountain dew
    I turned my face away
    And dreamed about you

Time marches on  -- Time stands still
Time on my hands -- Time to kill
(Indifference of Heaven" -- Warren Zevon) killer favorite of mine

I don't get many things right the first time, In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls, Brought me here
And where was I before the day -- That I first saw your lovely face?
    (The Luckiest - Ben Folds)

What a dream I had - Pressed in organdy
Clothed in crinoline Of smoky burgundy - Softer than the rain.

    (
For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her - Simon and Garfunkel)

So many great openings on the 'Born to Run' album.  'Thunder Road', as Lloyd mentioned.  Also, 'Backstreets'

One soft infested summer me and Terry became friends
Trying in vain to breathe the fire we was born in

    And 'Jungleland'

The Rangers had a homecoming, in Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his slick machine, over the Jersey state line

Hfs - I was thinking of this one when leafswin mentioned them too!  I drive my husband crazy playing all the sappy Christmas songs that time of the year, so he makes sure he plays this one every chance he gets!!

"Happy christmas your ar$e I pray god it´s our last."

We did a HUGE thread of holiday songs last December (seriously, one of the best threads I have ever seen) where we included album covers along with youtube links, and "Fairytale of New York" was one of the first songs jkj posted in the thread.  I also posted it several pages later, as I'd forgotten it was already in the thread.

I love sad music, and you don't get more melancholy than that.  :D

Awfully good additions, gang! Given my avatar, I'd be remiss by not mentioning ...

I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
    Of guaranteed personality."

The Clash, "Lost In the Supermarket."

As long as we're on Dylan songs, I lose my mind over this one (on my list in the Dylan song thread):

My love she speaks like silence
    Without ideals or violence
She doesn’t have to say she’s faithful
Yet she’s true, like ice, like fire
    People carry roses
    Make promises by the hours
My love she laughs like the flowers
    Valentines can’t buy her

"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air."

"Hey, hey mama said the way you move gonna make you sweat gonna make you grove."

"Well she was just seventeen and you know what I mean"

"She was a fast machine she kept her motor clean, was the best damn woman that I ever seen."

everyone's pretty much got the classics covered...so here are some more recent ones that i think are particularly splendid.

Please could you stop the noise, I'm trying to get some rest/
From all the unborn chicken voices in my head/

    -Radiohead, "Paranoid Android"

    Something in you/
    It jitters like a moth/
And I see that your arms are out to God/
And oh, they kill you when they talk/

-The Flaming Lips, "Moth in the Incubator"

What a beautiful face I have found in this place/
That is circling all 'round the sun/
What a beautiful dream that could flash on the screen/
In the blink of an eye and be gone from me/
Soft and sweet, let me hold it close and keep it here with me/

-Neutral Milk Hotel, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"

    and perhaps my favorite:

    A heart that's full up like a landfill/
A job that slowly kills you/
    Bruises that won't heal/

    -Radiohead, "No Surprises"
