Songs that mention other music artists in the lyrics.

I was thinking that there are quite a few songs where the writer/singer references another music artist in the lyrics.

    For example:

Lynyrd Skynyrd - "I hope Neil Yong will remember..."

Neil Young - "This is the story of Johnny Rotten..."

David Bowie ( in the Mott The Hoople song)- "my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones..."

David Bowie - "Hear this Robert Zimmerman. I wrote a somg for you..."

Jimmy Buffett- "Don't try to describe a Kiss concert if...."

Nils Lofgren- " I'm not Bob Dylan, but I never miss a beat..."

The Godfathers- "got those walkin' , talkin' Johnny Cash blues...."

Paul McCartney- "looks a lot like the one used by Jimmy Page..."

You get the idea....now add your own.

Just to name a few and I know Zilla will love the first band on the list.

Cheap Trick - Surrender  (When I woke up, Mom and Dad were rolling on the couch
Rolling numbers, rock and rolling, got my Kiss records out)

Def Leppard - Rocket (The whole song refers to different songs and artists from the 70's)

Generation X - Ready Steady Go (I'm still in love with the Beatles; I was in love with the Stones, no staisfaction; I was in love with Bobby Dylan, because I'm in love with rock and roll.

John Lennon - God (I don't believe in Elvis; I don't believe in Zimmerman; I don't believe in Beatles)

    Blue Oyster Cult 'In Thee'

'Jim says some destinies should not be delivered'.  Jim is Jim Carroll, and this refers to the lyrics to one of his songs.  Also for bonus points this song was directed to Patti Smith, who was the girlfriend of the songwriter.

The obvious one that I expect someone to quote:

Deep Purple- "Frank Zappa and the Mamas had the best place around, some stupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground...."

    plus:

The Scorpions- "Do you like Alice Cooper, do like Ringo Starr..."

The Smithereens- "she stood just like Bill Wyman, now I am her biggest fan."

There are songs that give tribute to other artists.

Gary Moore did a song called 'Texas Blues' that paid tribute to Billy Gibbons, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert Collins.

Rory Gallagher did a song called 'King of Zydeco' about Clifton Chenier.

Creeque Alley by the Mamas and the Papas was an autobiographical song that mentioned John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful, Roger McGuinn of the Byrds and Barry McGuire, singer of 'Eve of Destruction'.

Helter Skelter in U2's Rattle and Hum album, references two other musicians before their actual song starts. It might as well be part of the lyrics because you always hear it when you hear the song. It goes:

(This is a song Charles Manson stole from the Beatles. We're stealing it back.)

Spyder Turner mentions everybody from Jackie Wilson to Wilson Pickett in his version of Stand By Me, and now that I think of it, Van Morrison does pretty much the same thing in Real Real Gone.
