    Guess again on #8.

I know at least one member of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels went on to form the Detroit group known as the Rockets ( and they were excellent!), but I am looking for a band that was known as the Rockets earlier in their career, not later.

The biggest clue is in a song by the man who wasn't in the group, but fronted the group many times throughout his career. The band has made numerous changes since it's days as the Rockets.

Love your Rainbow Rising avatar.  My very first concert, July 30, 1976, was Richie Blackmore's Rainbow (with Dio)... REO Speedwagon opened.

Looks like we're going to need some more clues, Z.

In the meantime, a couple more easier ones to warm up with:

The Warlocks - The Grateful Dead

The High Numbers - The Who

Edit:  I cheated, but I know who the Rockets are now.  I dunno about that clue, I think most people associate them ONLY with the on-and-off again frontman.  Okay, I'll shuddup now.

    Here's another one:

    Kippington Lodge

This additional clue makes me think it might be Crazy Horse.

Thanks this is one of my favorite albums, and album covers.

    Bingo on Crazy Horse.

#4, #6 and # 7 are very difficult, and I only expect the smartest of the smart to know the answers.

#4 is the only one that no one guessed that I would have guessed myself. I stumbled on the others while looking to find enough to make this question more challenging.

That's who I had in mind.   But we'll have to wait for the judge to get back here. There were a slew of bands that used , and are still using the Rockets.

Kippington Lodge. No idea, sounds quite British though.

Well, I have to admit they became a band that really isn't all that well known.

I am somewhat disappointed that yoga didn't play our game, as she loves these games so much.

    Spice became Uriah Heep

    White Clover became Kansas

I'll leave #6 Power as the lone mystery.

Spinal Tap?  They tried using the name anyway, and found out that someone else already had it. So they were going to call themselves 'The New Originals", but then decided bag the whole thing so they started calling themselves ... I forget what happened after that.

    [/QUOTE]

    Correct!:

Marty: Let's...uh talk a little bit about the history of the group.
I understand Nigel you and David originally started the band
            wuh...back in...when was it...back in 1964?
David: Well before that we were in different groups, I was in a
group called The Creatures and w-which was a skiffle group.
Nigel: I was in Lovely Lads.
    David: Yeah.
Nigel: And then we looked at each other and says well we might as well
join up you know and uh....
David: So we became The Originals.
    Nigel: Right.
David: And we had to change our name actually....
Nigel: Well there was, there was another group in the east end called The
Originals and we had to rename ourselves.
    David: The New Originals.
Nigel: The New Originals and then, uh, they became....
David: The Regulars, they changed their name back to The Regulars and
we thought well, we could go back to The Originals but
            what's the point?
Nigel: We became The Thamesmen at that point.

Thanks, Zilla, I must have been asleep at the switch -- but if this was last week, I was feeling a little punk (not the time of year you usually associate with being sick, and I will spare you the details ... hahaha), so this thread just fell under the radar for me.    Not that I would have known (m)any ...  but I might have at least weighed in.

I have one I'd like to add for a band; I'm posing the question because I want to do a thread on this band.  Before I create the thread, does anyone know which band had this as their original name(?) :

    The Dust Brothers

(If no one gets it, I'll create the thread anyhow)

It is confusing, but you obviously know that you're spot on.    It's confusing because they seem to have been launched with that original name -- after the original Dust Brothers -- only to have an attempted lawsuit on their hands a year or two later for using the name.

These men deserve a thread, either way.   I'll see if I can get one going --- at this rate, might be tomorrow.
