Right off the bat, I'll say Prince is kind of high on this list.

Not that I don't like him, but really #18?...ahead of Pink Floyd?

    Get serious!

The absence of all the great Heavy Metal bands on these "best of" lists always turns me into a stark, raving lunatic....I mean, more so than usual.

The b@st@rd son of Rock n' Roll , Heavy Metal always gets stiffed on these lists.

I mean , I love Devo, but what are they doing on this list? No Graham Parker? No Joe Jackson? they are better than many on this list.

C'mon now , T.Rex?.....Sting?...the Sex Pistols... ahead of Graham Parker? Deep Purple, Black Sabbath? You have got to be kidding!

Not to mention how Aerosmith , Sting and Nirvana ahead of Lynyrd Skynyrd shows how dumb this list really is.

Yaa...they give Hard Rock it's own list, and someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think Black Sabbath is #1 on that list. You would think as #1 they would at least make it somewhere on this list of 100. Go figure!

Yeah, I thought the same thing, and I'm a Police fan. Springsteen only 27th is a joke, so much so that I want to disregard the entire list. Ditto the Clash at 31st.

Oh, and Johnny Cash behind Madonna?!?!?!?!?!?

Hold on there.  I was just about to say Madonna at #86 is a travesty.

Sly / Family Stone #28?  Are they serious?  And yes, I agree about the Police, that's ridiculous.  Glaringly ridiculous.

I thought I felt a rant coming on from Zilla, but he probably can't be bothered. Well, a rant that includes something about American Idol, that is.  :D

    paul simon is LAST?!?!

U2 is in the top 30?

John Coltrane just pops up out of nowhere at 77?

REM at 50?  the allman bros aren't even that high!

was this list made up by vh1 employees? or was it a vote online?

I wonder what factors they took into account for this list.

We all know I'm in love with Sting, but even I agree that The Police at #10 is way too high.  Sting's innate vocal talent was obscured by their mediocre songs.

I meant his vocal talent which I do find awesome (although, I should have specified), not his song writing ability which I do find mediocre.  And, agreed, I need help. :)

Every act is between the 50's to the late 80's, the newest act on the list looks to be Nirvana which came out around 88'. Is there any artist from the 90's who you feel could replace someone from the current list?

Re: VH1's Top 100 Greatest Artists

I'll agree with Greg in that it's almost futile to compare artists across disparate genres of music.  The aforementioned Coltranes stands out as symptomatic.

I also agree that the lack of significant heavy metal and rap artists belies the influence on more modern artists...because if we're not gauging influence (real or perceived), then what's the point...??  There also seems to be an anti-prog rock vein (Peter Gabriel, but not Genesis...?) which could be a more contemporary bias.

Beware of lists that try to be all things to all people.  Even if VH1 can be regarded as compiling the list in good faith (i.e., not gerrymandering), the editing process was bound to doom some otherwise more relevant acts.

With all that said, the Top 5 is pretty tough to argue with, IMO....

    hooray!

i agree about the smiths too...and pearl jam, why not? i dig them, and they had/have a big influence on rock music in general for sure.

they definitely got the top 5 as close as one could ever expect them to...and possibly nailed it dead on. it's all subjective.

however, i believe that they make these lists for the sake of controversy, and their little video segments and commentary about each artist in the countdown on tv is pretty entertaining and informative to watch.

    90s are tough:

    Pearl Jam
    Radiohead
    Pavement
    Foo Fighters
    Gov't Mule
    Beck
    Dave Matthews Band
    Tool
    Tribe Called Quest
    Alice In Chains
    White Stripes

    80s -- /> 90s, easier:
    Phish
    Pixies
    Sonic Youth
    Jane's Addiction
    Pantera
    Flaming Lips
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
New Order (New Wave also given the shaft in the list)
    INXS
    Metallica
    Public Enemy

Sometimes I'll put them on in the background, but they're so generalized that, as a true fan, they leave me wanting more.

It's almost like a survey of popular music for people who know very little about popular music.

right, but there is so much that i don't know about music that no matter what the countdown is, i at least learn a few more things that might come handy in a trivia game!

re: the john lennon/ paul mccartney situation, paul put out way too much crap to be any higher on that list for his solo career, and lennon is immortalized, even though he also put out a lot of crap too.

how is no one else freaking out about paul simon at 100?

the KINKS at 56. what a joke. KINKS s/b in the TOP TEN, maybe TOP 5.

because i love music, i avoid vh-1 and mt-v. morons.

also, the influential VU at 74 compared to the  boring EAGLES at 23.
this list has no credibility, but i knew that when the OP said vh-1.
the only thing that could have made this list worse was to have JOURNEY IN THE TOP 100.
