Oh how I miss the original Golden Gate restaurant in Chinatown. But some of my faves now... Su Chang's is good stuff...love the tofu and minced shrimp. Bamboo in Dedham...food is tasty and the service is friendly. Dragon Chef in Needham...How can one resist one of the top 100 best specialty take out Chinese restaurants in the country?

Tiny little takeout in Beverly - China River.  Not fancy at all, somewhat dingy, has three tables, but oh my gosh - the food....!   Best Crab Rangoon you will ever eat - trust me.  I've been trying to find a place closer to my new apartment that compares, and nothing even comes close.   Worth the drive.

Chili Garden in Medford.

My wife and I always got some good spicy food that most Chinese joints do not have.

We always did take-out though.
Seeing all these "recommendations" makes me weep. If you want real, good Chinese food and not the Americanized junk that passes as Chinese food, you need to go to Chinatown.
Posted by egomaniac
I went to Chinatown.  And it wasn't half as good as my little takeout in Beverly.  The Crab Rangoon in Chinatown tasted 10 days old and was so over-fried that it was nauseating.  Huge disappointment.

Victoria Station in Allston has about the cheapest twin lobsters in town at $15.95, but it isn't exactly the Ritz.  It is very authentic though and knowing a little Mandarin would probably get you a long way here.

A few places from where I have lived over the years:

Leominster....Singapore, hands down. Great sit down/takeout. Been there for  20+ years. Vinh Phat for takeout. Excellent food. wish they had more sit down options. Very friendly people.

Reading/Wakefield/Stoneham..Mandarin Reading and China Moon....but Sato II was the best place around IMO.

Salem, MA...For sit down Fresh Taste of Asia is good and has sushi to boot. Bangkok Paradise is intersting in that it has Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Sushi. IMO, Hong Kong King is best for takeout. Super fast and friendly service.

Portsmouth, NH...Hong Kong Express on Islington was always a solid option.

Well it's not in the "Boston area" but Chens in Derry NH is quite good.  The building isn't much to look at and the bar crowd can be a bit rowdy but the food definitely makes up for any short comings.  The egg foo young is the made to order, filet and tomatoes is awesome as well.
There is no single Chinese restaurant that provides sufficient quality and taste of all items for my pleasure... Is it just me? Seems there's always one place that has the best chicken fingers, which is down the street from the place with the best bonesless ribs. Then it's a fifteen minute drive for the best fried rice, but at least I can pick up the tasty lobster sauce on the way back home from the joint across the way. But the lo mein is too greasy there, though, so I'll wait until I want crab rangoon and go to my favorite place around the corner for those.

PF Chang's is the worst when it comes to Asian cuisine. I went there recently and the Egg Drop soup was absolutely disgusting.

My top places:

Su Chang's in Peabody
Out of Asia in Saugus
Wonder Taste in Medford Square
Victoria's Seafood on Comm Ave
Similan's (Brown Sugar Cafe) in Cambridge
