With more and more stores across the nation planning to open their doors to holiday shoppers on Thanksgiving evening - do you think Massachusetts legislators should work to repeal the blue laws so Bay State retailers can do the same? Nope.... why so retailers can make more money? take a day off from shopping enjoy the day eat some turkey watch the parade or some football. try to forget about how the retailers have us all trained to think EVERY holiday is just another day to shop

It depends on if you are a shopper or a worker.

Many of the blue laws should indeed be reviewed for repeal. However, I do not believe that this one should. Thanksgiving is about family, and anything to preserve the time during those 24 hrs, is legislation well spent, well intended, and should remain on the books. It is the big-box stores that drive lobbying for it to the detriment of employees and their families on that day, ever striving to get that leg up on the competition.

One could argue that the contingent of knuckleheads piling up at the doors, choping at the bit for them to unlock are part of the societal problem, but they are small portion of the larger equation with all of the sides involved.

It's illegal to "Be "idle" like "common coasters, unprofitable fowlers, and tobacco takers"

Blue laws should be repealed for two reasons: first, they were created at a time when churches exerted undue influence over every day life; second, they are clearly in restraint of trade; third, much needed tax revenues are not generated by needless closing of shops and services.  No one benefits from blue laws because they are archaic and counter productive to the needs of a modern society.
