Dems looking out for the common man and other myths...

Efforts in Congress to cap credit-card interest rates are faltering because of opposition from Democrats and a lack of specific support from the White House, despite growing consumer outrage over a rush by banks to impose rates as high as 30 percent.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama vowed to back a strict limit on credit-card interest rates. But the White House is not yet behind any particular plan this year. While Obama has chastised credit-card companies, his spokeswoman declined to say this week how he planned to follow through on his campaign pledge.

Obama finds the behavior of credit-card lenders “outrageous’’ and “looks forward to reviewing additional legislation that caps interest rates,’’ but he has not taken a specific position, spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

Another campaign promise down the tubes...

    10.2 NATIONAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

add in the people who just gave up looking for work and the under employed and the figure jumps out to between 17 to 20 percent of all Americans

AND YET, THEY WANT TO SPEND, SPEND, SPEND ON SOCIALISTIC PROGRAMS (when we don't have the money to do so), TELL US WHAT DO, WHAT TO THINK, HOW TO THINK, WHAT TO EAT, WHAT IS POLITICALLY CORRECT TO SAY AND DO AT ANY GIVEN POINT AND CHIDE US IF WE THINK OTHERWISE OR DISAGREE WITH THEM.

WOW!!!!! OBAMA AND THOSE LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC LEADERS ARE REALLY LOOKING OUT FOR US.

Today REPUBLICANS blocked efforts to prevent credit card companies from raising their rates.

This new fiscal awareness from wingnuts is an absolute joke.

For further evidence of betrayal of American workers, the Dems support of amnesty of illegal immigrants and vastly increased numbers of visas for foreign workers. The Dems have been fighting tooth and nail against amendments that would require verification of citizenship (E-Verify) before qualifying for healthcare and unemployment. The GOP wanted to require E-Verify for stimulus jobs but the Dems fought that, too. Democrats = Traitors, all of them. Vote for a Republican senator in MA.

Ahhhhh with oly 40 votes in the Senate and 177 in the House they CAN'T block anything! The Dem's have super majorities in both and can push through ANY bill they wish. With a Dem President they can get ANY bill signed into law. You do understand that right?
Are you being dishonest or are you unaware of the basic civics of our system?

Right.  And the Republicans did so much about illegal immigrants for the past eight years.  Nothing but a bunch of bull.  They want them here to work for little pay for them.  Stop believing everything you hear from that fat pig druggie Rush.

Nope, can't recall that at all.  And Obama has been in office for 10 months.  We all know who put us in the position we are in now.

I agree that NOBODY seems to be bailing out the average American.  But don't forget that GWB was behind the first bailout - it is both parties.  Which is why the beginning of this thread was ridiculous.

It seems that this vote this past week should have been more publicized - how dare they?  They know how badly people are hurting, yet their allegiance to corporate America is more important.  Disgraceful.

I am about to pay off the one credit card I have left - I won't have one again (I'll keep one put away for an emergency).  Debit card only - you can make reservations or buy things online with a debit card - you can do anything you do with a credit card.

I think the bottom line is that we have to look out for ourselves and not expect some person in Washington or Beacon Hill to do it for us.

This does not excuse credit card companies from their rather unsavory practices, but last I checked no one forces you to apply for a credit cards and then max them out with no ability to pay it back. If you don't know what "interest" is then I would advise you not to apply for a credit card.

Here's a novel idea----only buy stuff you can afford. If you can't afford something you want, then save money until you can!!! I know this is a kind of cutting edge idea, but try it some time.

The thread was started for just this reason. I am sick of hearing the R's are only for BB and the D's are only for the common man. Both parties are for BB and want us all to be servants to that. Third party and term limits.

I agree with you, Ire, but only to an extent.  Why shouldn't the citizenry be able to rely on Gov't to protect us from unsavory practices?  All that's missing from the loan shark days are the leg breakers. People used to go to prison for charging interest rates that are lower than today's legal rates.  Why shouldn't someone be able to buy things on credit and know the rate won't go up next year on things already bought?  Why won't gov"t stand up to Corporate America's blood lust for obscene profits that cause millions of Americans to suffer great hardships?  Many businesses and industries today are no better than the Roaring 20's Mafia, and the CEOs are nothing more than modern day Al Capones.  Sorry, Ire, but I see your approach as merely blaming the victim.

Easy, those terms and conditions regarding rate changes, etc ARE available to the consumer but my guess is that many of them just throw it in the recycle bin or file it away and then never go back to read through it. Understandable, but not an excuse. My guess is that many folks just look at the line that tells them their credit limit and then spend away. I can't agree with you that the person that does that qualifies as a "victim"

Of course the T's and C's are in small print and not a fun read (usually a tiny little booklet that comes with your card), but there is also an 800 number on the back of the card where you can call and ask questions. They will answer your questions, but they are not going to go out of there way to do so.

Sometimes I think a credit card should have a warning label on them just like a pack of cigarrettes but I digress.

One more thought on this. If you really want to get these folks to change, then pay off your card and then cancel it. They will respond. Dollar voting is the only thing that registers with these people. Other then that, just exercise good judgement when using the plastic.
