Haha, how disengenous.  They sent a bill with provisions in it they knew would be stripped out, and when presented with the clean bill, that was requested in the first place, the house added a new poison pill provision which they knew would not pass.

Not to mention the fact that the House has refused 18 requests to open a budget negotiations that would do away with the need for CR's.

The gambit has always been to play for a shutdown because what the house GOPers want to do is  establish and burnish their conservative bonafides by demonstrating to the base the lengths they will go to in trying to impede Obamacare.  Despite their talk of wanting to keep government open some GOP house members have noted the giddyness of their fellow caucus members in being part of a government shutdown.  Their entire strategy has been to negotiate in bad faith, present terrible options, and spin to the public as doing their job.  We've seen this play out several times now with the debt limit drama and other budgeting issues where the GOP uses deadlines as leverage to obtain what they could not by standard legislative processes, and the brinksmanship tactics the GOP had used in the past got called last night and its about time.

There is no need to negotiate with the House, because they have no middle ground, because their ultimate fight is their continued attempts to try and asymetrically fight ACA, a settled debate, which the senate (including several GOPers) has already said is a nonstarter.  Hence why the government is now closed despite the GOP "best efforts" (ahem) and Obamacare opened today.

ACA is not a settled debate.

Much of the country opposes it.

It was passed without a single Republican vote with Democrats skirting the rules to get it passed.

Really, the President should just go with the Republican bill because much of it has already been delayed and that which hasn't doesn't work anyway.

Look, try common sense. If the dems were serious about "negotiations" why not do it? The house sent over a bill that would pay for the govt but, wanted the senate to do some things like:

drop the tax on medical equipment

put themselves back under the law they wrote

delay the law (as has been done with unions, big corps and the legislature) for a year

    etc.

Why just demand a "clean bill" with no negotiation? Put politicians back in it and stop the tax on medical equipment for year!!??? Or at least one of those but, NOOOO they would not negotiate because they think it will hurt republicans more than them.

Its not about doing whats right or negotiations its about f-in politics and the same ole b-s!

It is settled.  It was passed legally, upheld by the Surpreme Court, and when the next election came around the guy running to repeal it lost.

As for most of the country opposing ACA, 40% of the country doesn't even know that it is a law!  Most when questioned are led with questions about "Obamacare" and respond based on partisan conditioning, but when asked about the provisions of the bill large majorities favor the law.  So the idea that people oppose the law is largely a reflection of the distortion and misinformation that has been floating around for 4 years.  Interested parties have spent a lot of money to convince people that they don't like "Obamacare" while those same people like the provisions and coverage it provides.  Its nonsensical.  But despite that, the law is settled.

Please.  The Republican House owns the self-induced shut down.

What the country needs is a real government shut down to end this nonsense. No social security checks, no medicare or medicaid payments, no funding of the military, no air traffic controllers, etc. This partial shutdown just plays into the hands of zealots on the right as the masses don't see a direct effect on their daily lives.

Try to imagine if democrats controlled the house, and the republicans controlled the Senate.

Now try to imagine democrats attaching an assault weapons ban onto the government appropriations bill (because they couldn't get one passed in the legislative process), and then saying they will defund the government unless the assault weapons ban is put in place.

Would you then say that republicans are not negotiating with democrats?  Be honest....if you are capable of it.

The dems refuse to to do ANY negotiation, your lame argument about WHEN to negotiate is irrelevent since it is not how govt works these days! Rules, ethics, procedures, and their enforcement only depend on which party has power.

The house sent a bill with several issues for negotiation; the senate said f-u send us the same bill we sent back down or we'll just blame you for shutting the govt down!!

    Your argument is dishonest. Shocker.

Why is it not "how govt works these days!"?   Oh right. Because the House GOP, these days, holds America and the debt limit hostage and issues demands.

There are two separate issues here:

    1. Parts of Obamacare need to be changed, tweaked, whatever. (Whether this is so)

    2. Any and all means to that end are acceptable. (Whether this is so).

An honest person can take the position of #1.

Only lying swine can take the postiion that #2 is an acceptable way to run the country.

Even IF the GOP is 100% right - which I dispute - but even if that is the case, the way they are going about it is 100% wrong.

I would have wholeheartedly opposed the Dems if their way of ending the Iraq war was to shut down government and force a debt limit default unless Bush immediately ordered withdrawal of troops.

I guess that's the difference between us. You are more than happy to hurt America to get your way.
