The Acton Family Network is a great resource. When my kids were younger, we joined the babysitting co-op and the moms all became close friends (and are to this day despite some of the kids being in high school!)
In recent years the group has done more programming on weekends so that working parents can take advantage of it. Dues are charged yearly (modest amount) but then many great events are free to members throughout the year. And AFN members get discounts at some local merchants.
The schools here are great and, for elementary school, the parents get to choose which one their kids attend (subject to availability--some schools go to lottery.) We actually transferred two of our kids midway through elementary school and it worked out very well for them and us.
