Re: B's fans Eastern Conf. predictions

    Okay,  just for fun.

    1- Boston
    2- Philly
    3- Washington
    4- Pittsburgh
    5- Rangers
    6- Montreal
    7- New Jersey
    8- Canes

Yes I'm a homie. The truth,  the Bruins need to play Canes and I see the Canes just making it for the last playoff spot.
Pens do have a great team but they will have a slow 1st half.  It's just the cup hangover.
Caps haven't improved their team from last season and weak goaltending.
Philly's weak spot , goaltending.  It's been their weak spot since the 80's and they still managed to finish on top.
TOP4 are a given and can interchange (My true feeling Bruins finishing 3rd then Canes will finish 7th) . 5-12 will be close and maybe a team like the Devils won't make it. Brodeur will not save this year.
All this said there is great parity and we're in for one hell of a season.

    SanDog,

I'm currently living in Vancouver and there are 3 sports bars within walking distance of my house.  Next time you're in Vancouver, check out SCORE on Davie St.  Granted I live in a pretty good location for pubs and sports bars but there are definitely a lot of them up North.  Where I used to live in Saskatchewan there were sports bars everywhere.  Very popular.  And hockey is huge there!

Just thought I'd let you know.  It's one of the only ways I get to watch Bruins games!  It's a little harder now that I'm living in Canuck territory but servers will generally put the Bruins game on one of the TVs if requested.

No need to ignore, you have a terrible coach, mediocre GM and a team that can go on all the kiddie rides at the amusement park.

This isn't the Bruins from 5 years ago, when your small skilled forwards had Hal Gill to pick on, Chara and company will plaster the mini me's to the wall and Martin will cry for penalties while Georges Larque makes more commercial with hot girls because he is benched.

    Enjoy early spring golf.

Just to be clear: I see the Bruins ahead of the Habs, but not by much. From a Mtl perspective, even assuming that he can do what you claim he will, I would not lose sleep over Lucic. Habs play against teams other then Boston for 76 of their 82 games. Three of those are with home ice advantage. And Lucic plays on only one line as far as I know. Don't get me wrong: he's a great player... for the Bruins. But his impact on the Habs' regular season performance and standing will be minimal. And that's a fact not a prediction.

Re: "Martin will cry for penalties". Please! Bruins fans need to refresh their repertoire of clichés about the Habs. This one is getting a little tired.

Lafleur1979...get a life man...this is a Boston Bruins blog...I'm sure you peppers in Montreal have a blog where you all can go and talk about your beloved Habitants!! Don't come here and start commenting about cliches and this and that...if you dont like what you hear...leave!! Bottom line is...the Habs haven't beat the B's in...lets see...11 straight games!! And here is my prediction....the losses will keep piling up for the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge....the Habs have spent so much money on smurf forwards and d-men that are slow as molasses!!! Not to mention Jesus Price will sh*t the bed once again this year....too focused on coke, bars and 18 year old escorts!! The Habs dont compare to the B's... Looking forward to playing you guys this season!! Go B's.....and oh yah...Salut Lafleur!!

[QUOTE]There is such as thing called "regression to the mean". After an exceptional season due to a lot of factors converging together subsequent results are expected to dip. Planets don't align year after year. And believe it or not, coaching staffs study successful teams to learn how to defeat them. I think the Bruins will make the playoffs though. (I'm not kidding) Their best asset: two very good goalies. The fate of most other teams in the East rests on the performances of a single goalie. In particular, Varlamov and Price (and possibly Gustavsson?) have big talent but inexperience and will therefore have the biggest impact (positive or negative) on the final standings. Could the leafs squeeze into the playoffs?  1. Pittsburg 2. Boston 3. Washington 4. Montreal 5. Carolina 6. Philadelphia 7. NJ 8. Rangers

How in gods name can you see the bruins ahead of the canadiens but, "Not by much"

we blew you out in 4 games,

You don't have a quality goalie
You don't have quality defensemen (and you just lost your best one)
You lost your best forward and got scott gomez (who was given away by the rangers)
I hardly think Brian Gionta (even though i love this kid) is enough to make up for that.

I put the Canadiens as 5 just because........ I guess I'm mental

but seriously... The bruins are in a different league than the canadiens

Sorry but I need to respond to your points regarding the Habs. (Some of your friends may not care for this info, but there is not point making predictions if you don't know your team's opponents).
    1) Goalies
That's an exaggeration, but I get your point. At worse though, Halak can squeeze us into the playoffs.
    2) Defense
Sorry but on this one you are in left field. Markov is and always has been our top defenseman (Norris material BTW if you care to look). Hamrlik has been #2. Komisarek was no more than passable last year (way overrated because of his hits). O'Byrne looks set to easily take his place this year. Add Gorges (extremely underrated), Spacek, Mara, and Gil. That's a well balanced D in terms of size, defensive skills, puck moving and PP scoring. Three of four young prospects in Hamilton are also ready for replacements anytime.
    3) Camalleri, Gomez, Gionta, and Moen will easily erase our memories of Kovalev, Koivu, Tanguay, and Dandeneault. But a few question marks remain on offense, I agree.

Overall, don't count on a total meltdown of the Habs like last year. Most of the factors that caused this have been dealt with.

    Cheers! from Mtl.

P.S.: Sorry about my handle if it resurrects bad memories. It's all in good humour of course. Would Schmautz1978 be a more palatable choice?

Re: B's fans Eastern Conf. predictions

    theflower1979,

1- There will be so much pressure on the goalie's this year that it will either break or make Price. Halak at times can look good but he can never carry the load.
He's been in some games and couldn't stop a beach ball.
Basically goalies in Montreal need stability between the ears,  talent is not enough.
2- Defense.  Markov norris trophy ...LOL.. he's only a star up in Montreal .He's never been considered for the Norris trophy.  Had one good year due to all those PP points.  He's okay but don't put in the same category as Chara.  Chara shuts down players. Markov cannot . Hit Markov a little (like in the playoffs) and he crumbles, fini !
The defense will only go as far as Markov brings them the others mediocre at best.
BTW O'Byrne  will Lucic's new target.  Sure he had fun in pre-season but wait till he gets to play against real NHL players. Bye bye confidence.
Spacek,  I like what I saw in him last year and a couple games in pre-season.
3- Three new guys will fair well but they're too small. They will not survive the grind of your own division.  These type of players will be good in a season but playoff time, sorry just can't hack it.
All in all I did put Montreal up there and will make the playoffs in 6th spot but anything can happen from 5th-12th spot.
False moves, injuries and bad goaltending and you're on the outside looking in.

I am agree with you on several points Bslegion and flower but you forget that the Habs are heavier than the bruins, look at the statistics. The bruins have a rough style  but their forwards have small size and always a lot of injured.

    My non-homie revised predictions.

    1- Philly
    2- Boston
    3- Washington
    4- Pittsburgh
    5- Rangers
    6- Montreal
    7- Canes
    8- Tampa

I say Tampa is the black horse of the group and looked over their roster (including Hedman) They're a very good team. Their only question mark is the goaltending .
Devils unless Brodeur gets 20 s/o , they don't make it.

[QUOTE]I don't see why people think this team is destined to drop so much. Unless every single one of their younger players hits a wall the Bruins should be able to equal the production they had last year. From last years team they lost Kessel Axy Yelle Hnidy Montador Ward Manny Added Sturm Recchi Rask Sobotka Ference Morris Hunwick Lucic a year older Stuart a year older Krejci a year older Wheeler a year older Bergeron farther Although we didn't do anything drastic, other than lose Kessel, I think the team is in good shape.....the key will be staying healthy, and depth on defense, the forwards are fine, even if we did nothing to compensate for the loss of kessel, offensively the team would be okay (if you look at the numbers from last year, you'll see that we would have been a solid goal scoring team without Kessel) but we added from within the organization. Top 3 in the east for sure, I can't really think of a team i would consider better than the bruins in the east

Philly in 1st spot? LOL! I guess you hadn't factored in the injury to Ray Emery Wink

Boston anywhere in the top 8 is fine by me.

Don't have to go far back to see teams sneak into the playoffs late and momentum carries them all the way. Penguins last year and, painful though it may be and slightly off topic, NY Giants. Doh!

They will be in the hunt with half (7 or 8 teams probably) of the Eastern Conference for spots 5-8 right down to the final couple of weeks.  The Bruins still could miss the playoffs altogether if they are not careful.  Embrace the reality of this possibility, too.

I think you are right Blue Eyed, I think we will be anywhere from 5th to 8th. The key is getting through the next 14 games to the Olympic break still in contension. After the Olympic break, we should be completely healthy. I think this team when at full strength can win a 1st round match up with anyone of the top 4 teams in the East. Here is my predictions

    1- N.J.
    2- Wash
    3- Buff
    4- Pitt
    5- N.Y.R.

I love it when guys get on a four month old thread and just rip the predictions.  Really, just the most difficult sort of post to write, what with the intelligence and hindsight.  "Look at all the blind lemming Red Wing supporters predicting they'd win the Cup!  Any idiot could see they'd be slouching along in a dogfight for one of the final playoff spots in the west!"

For the record, the Wings are one spot above the Bruins in goals/game this year, just like last year.  That puts them in 28th.  Their powerplay is almost a full percentage point worse than Boston's.  They have one more point than the Bruins in the same number of games - and that puts them in 9th in the West.  Anyone want to suggest that they've had more problems with injuries than the Bruins?
