Bruins really didn't have a ton of man games lost during the strike shortened season last year either. This season has been very different, sometimes going long stretches with 3 regulars out at a time.

    Re: 48 Games in...

The team is slightly better statistically, but feels way better to me watching them.  Some interesting notes:

    -Smith is outscoring Seguin.

    -Iginla is outscoring Horton.

-Krug has more points than any D from last season, but not at the expense of Chara, who has scored the exact same.

-Rask is almost identical - very consistent.

-Soderberg is outscoring Peverley, in less games.

-Marchand and Bergeron have scored a little less while Krejci and Lucic have scored a little more.

-Eriksson has more points but a slower pace than Jagr.

-Dougie Hamilton's scoring is down but pace similar due to missing time, while his +/- is up.

--> This team seems much better overall to me, by beeing a little better in many areas.  Krug is a major addition while Soderberg-Eriksson seems more impressive than Peverley-Jagr.  I like Iginla over Horton.  Smith seems a little better than Seguin - slower and a weaker s hot, but smarter and more creative.  The only downside is Seidenberg's injury, but I'm really impressed so far.

    Re: 48 Games in...

They finished the game against Chicago with Chara, Boychuk and three guys who were in the AHL last year.  The only goal they gave up - despite a 4-3 PP in OT - was a weird bounce off of Rask's pad on a s/ot you give them 100/100 times.  They've had no fewer than 9 AHL call-ups, many of them for multiple games (only Cunningham and Svedberg played just one, I think?), and Spooner and Miller have been pressed into significant roles.  Bartkowski was supposed to be the 7th D and hasn't missed a game in months.  Caron was supposed to be a spot forward and didn't miss a game for months until he was injured.

...and they've scored 7 more goals (w/o that Sequins guy), given up 2 fewer, and have one more point in the standings despite having to play a tougher schedule that includes the powers in the West.

I'm impressed that they've done so well.  I don't know what to think yet.  Just when you think they'll be healthy enough to see what they really have, McQuaid goes out.  I don't think we'll know how close this team is to a run like last year's until they have Chara, Hamilton, Boychuk, McQuaid, Krug, and Bartkowski or Miller on D; Kelly and Spooner flexing between 3rd and 4th line roles; and the right line combos for Eriksson and Smith.  And even then, we're talking the NHL playoffs.  You never know until you know, y'know?

To me the team looks better at more times than not, it makes me wonder what they will look like if they can have the 2 top lines more consistent and the 3rd  pick it up a bit more ofte, Again the 4th line is looking good again. As Book mentions, with all the ahl call ups, particular to the defense im actually surprised at where the Bs are right now. My only hope is they can get another good expereinced D man soon and take some weight off the young guys.

I think this is a great way to put it, wally.  It's not that the kiddie corps needs to be replaced for non-performance; it's more that I worry about the consequences if things start to go against them.  They've mostly avoided funks, but Krug's scoring pace has dropped off, and there have been some rag-tag performances lately where they got out of Dodge but just barely.  One more solid, reliable veteran who can help manage the emotional intelligence of that D corps would take a lot of weight off of Krug and Bartkowski particularly, Miller and Hamilton secondarily, and make Chara and Boychuk's load a little more managable.

That was what I meant to say lol but so true, just that one experienced D man can make that big of a difference.
