Another player got over paid today

Wheeler just got 6 years at 33 mill equaling 5.6 mill a year.

19 goals in the short season.  Quality playmaker.  Many UFA years bought.

In today's NHL economics, this seems like the correct deal.

What do you think they should have paid him?  If he chose to walk at the end of next season, who do you think they could have gotten to replace him?

We'll see - the money gives me pause, but they bought five years of his UFA status, and I have to admit he's greatly improved as an all around player since coming under Noel's tutelage. Also if you look at his stats over the last two seasons, that's basically the going rate these days (agree with it or not) for a player like Wheeler. He's not the same player he was when he wore the spoked B. I'll put thi down as "wait and see"

These longer term deals are all made with the assumption that the cap will increase each year.

GM's overpay now, and hope the contract becomes a bargain, by year 3 or 4.

Wheeler is a decent player, but on Boston, he would be ranked at about #6 on the forwards' depth chart, and maybe 7th, depending on what Iginla has left.

That is a lot of money for a borderline 2nd/3rd liner on a good team, but Winnipeg will always have to overpay for any player willing to commit, long-term.

Wouldn't call 19 goals in 48 games over paying ,sounds about right too me.

The guy has averaged about 19 goals over his FULL seasons. Thats a risk to pay for an aberation in an aberation of a season. I remember the days when $5.6 million bought you 30 goals.. .

    Lets GO BRUINS!!!

Several contracts being signed that are worse than Wheeler's.

The last three full seasons have had 30, 29 and 24 guys with 30 or more goals, which is an average of one or less per team.

As the cap goes up, the better players make more.

Re: Another player got over paid today

It seems like everyone thinks that all these players are being overpaid, but if they are all being overpaid than is anyone really being overpaid, or is it just market value? Wheeler is a top line player for the Jets, in oder to keep him they had to pay up or he would leave.
