God & Next Pope on Our Side

The young Gentleman on the left (with the Bruins jersey) is none other than Marc Ouellette - the man who will be elected the next Pope in the next few days.

Cardinal Ouellette is a Bruin fan; consequently, God must be too, or soon will be.

A French-Canadian Bruins fan as Pope? That would confuse a lot of Catholics in Quebec - they wouldn't know whether to celebrate or riot.

In MA we have a better expression, "they wouldn't know whether to shi* or go blind."

Where does the pope send his letter of resignation? Does he get a pension? What does a retired pope do ? Does he go to Boca ? Play in a foursome while you're on vacation in Florida with a retired school teacher a retired amtrack conductor and ...the pope ?

I don't know who the pope was when I was younger, but he had to be a big habs fan.

JWensink, this will be the only Pope ever to have any awareness or interest in hockey.

Not true. Pope John Paull II was a hockey player.

    http://www.ewtn.com/wyd2000/dines.htm

    http://www.zenit.org/en/articles/george-weigel-on-why-everyone-counts

"The Pope offered you hospitality, did you give him gifts?" ZENIT asked.

"Yes!" Alana said, who brought a book and photographs of Nova Scotia, a bookmark, and a CD recorded by her diocese. The Canadian youths gave the Pope a hockey stick with his name, John Paul, inscribed on the back. And his number: 2, in Roman numerals, of course. It was Roger's idea.

"Because I love hockey," he explained, gently shrugging his shoulders.

The Pope surprised them by confiding, "60 years ago, I too played hockey!"

'This may sound peculiar. You are young. He is old. You are vigorous. He, once a great sportsman -- a daredevil skier, a man who could hike for hours on end, a kayaker and hockey player -- now leads the Church from a wheelchair. The Pope often treats his infirmities with the medicine of humor. '

With the stick mentioned in the article.

I saw a clip once of him using his staff to mimic a pass.

I was not aware of this.

Speaking of Pope Jean Paul 2, I was in Boston for 10 days in September of 1979. It was an eventful visit.

During my time there then, Ray Bourque signed his first contract, Carl Yaztrzemski got his 3000th hit,  and the Pope visited Boston.

Because of the latter two, the hotel I reserved overbooked and had no room for me. But, because I reserved with American Express they got me a room at The Eliott on Commonweath Ave at no charge.

Yeah, but given when he was Pope, I always figured he was either an Islanders or Oilers fan. ;)

EDIT: When I was looking for those old articles, I saw mention that John Paul had a scar over his eye that he got from a high stick. Anyone know if that's true?

Wow, I can be slow sometimes - I just got the joke. I was thinking "what problem does Ouellet have  with Brodeur - he's Quebecois too." Yes, I can be a bit daft at times.

From a news piece on the CBC last night. Snapped it with my phone.

British bookies have made him the 3rd favourite, at 6 to 1 odds, to become the new Pope. They have an African Cardinal first.

This reminds of the awarding of the 2006 World Cup by FIFA in 2000, when South Africa were favoured, but the Germans won.

    Nice odds. Very tempting.

not too sure God/Jesus and any pope should be in the same sentence but if it helps the Bruins win a few more Stanley Cups,i will convert or is it come back to where i once belonged.

I'm in Boston today and all next week.  Woo!  Great weather.  No complaints when I'm down there and people are shoveling up here, however.

    nice pic LOL

Although there's been some stories about him up in Quebec. Is it only talk ? People jumping on the "Bash Catholicism " bandwagon ? Anyway not going to discuss religion  BUT hey,  if he's a Bruins fan I'll be shoving it in a lot of Hab fans faces.
