    Is Thornton Needed?

As the game with Buffalo last night illustrates it seems the B's did fine in the toughness department without Thornton actively participating:

So the question becomes, is he needed or is he just taking up a roster spot from someone else?

One argument is that he is essential to take on the other team's heavyweights. Yet, last night McCormack did not throw down with Thornton nor could Thornton find someone  to go with him against the Habs. The result was him running around looking for fights that were not going to happen.

The other argument is that he fights so Lucic and Horton do not have to. But Lucic handles himself well and seems to feed off of the agression. Besides, I do not remember anyone using this "too valuable to fight" meme when Neely was bashing his way to multiple 50 goal seasons.

So, do we really need Thornton?....

I like Thornton-- but no, he is taking the spot of either Seguin or Paille and I think he needs to sit.

In a game against the Flyers or Rangers I'm Ok with it but Montreal and Buffalo he needs to sit.

    Re: Is Thornton Needed?

I agree with whats being said here BUT.  a game like tonight he is needed because they are playing a team that take liberties and have many guys who will throw down ie. Henry, Konopka and Martin.  What you guys need to remember is his presence keeps other teams from taking liberties.  I am in agreement that vs. teams with no legit heavy weight he shouldn't be in there. But vs other teams we dont want Lucic or Mcquaid being forced to fight a Boogard, Carkner, Engelland, Godard, Boutlon and Fedurok

He should be the spare forward and use him when needed against tougher teams.

A 3rd line of Kelly - Campbell - Paille would be just fine...put Seguin on the 3rd line!

    NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

He was in the game when both Berg and Sav(3 different times) were injured, so that taking liberty thing is not really working.

Against anyone who doesn't have a Mr. Sluggo suited up, sit Thornton.  Paille or Seguin bring more than Thornton does.
