Without Montreal in the Central, I wonder if they would have put the B's in the Eastern and Columbus in the Central.  It makes sense from a rivalry standpoint, but not from a geographical one.   Looking forward to some  Boston-Detroit showdowns.

That is a big plus.....to bad this did not happen sooner when the Wings were still in their prime.

16 teams in the East, and 14 in the West?

How crappy is your team to miss the playoffs in the West?

Agreed Crowls, off by 1 team I can live with but off by 2 teams gives all Western Conference teams a better chance to make the Playoffs.

I think the wild card scheme addresses this discrepency....

    From the TSN Article...

The top three teams in each division would make the playoffs, along with the four wild-card teams - the best two non-division winners in each conference.

I read that as 8 teams from each conference.  May be off on that.

The way I read it is that 8 teams from each Conference make it.  8 out of 16 in the East and only 8 out of 14 in the West.  This is considerable IMHO.

Bruins in the Central Division?  When I think Central North America, I often think Boston.

The article is basing it off of an NHL memo from last week. I am sure when details come out, this will be explained.

They have to play for the CONCAF Cup before they can get to the Stanley Cup...

Here's an idea. Perhaps the league is thinking of expanding out west?

Great idea...Albuquerque doesn't have a team yet.  Isn't there a better chance Phoenix ends up in the East?

The division names are just stupid.  Montreal, Boston, Florida and Tampa are not central to anything.

Name the conferences after dead guys and name the divisions correctly.

This is going to bother me until the next realignment.

I also disagree with the "central" name.  It doesn't make sense.

Uneven conferences still damages my calm.

I would think the idea would be that the 4 wild-cards are decided by league standings, rather than by conference.

They need to have divisions within with conference, so what would you have preferred?

Right!  It's not like I don't like it for whatever reason.  It's as unrelated as calling it the "Brazillian Division".

Couldn't agree more..Would love to see the Adams,Smythe,Norris etc..Campbell and Wales Conference...Divisional play should be more significant, rivalries in hockey are fantastic.

They changed the names to make them more fan friendly.

"I hate hockey.  Who is Wales, anyway?"

     - "It's the Eastern, now."

"Oh, well, let's go buy jerseys!"

Dumb.  Another attempt at marketing that I just can't imagine had a major effect.  You know what else really creases me?  The mics on the refs.  Usually, they either don't work or you can't hear/understand anyway.  They figured that if football did it, it must be a good idea.  No one told them that the NHL uses the highest quality available.  The NHL went to Radio Shack and bought walkie-talkies from the discount bin.

It's stupid, can't help but think they are following the NBA model in the realignment..They better not start changing jerseys on a monthly basis like the NBA does...Man, I hate the NBA.

Central Division: Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Toronto.

Atlantic Division: Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, N.Y. Islanders, N.Y. Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington.

THE ABOVE DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO ME. BELOW MAKES MORE SENSE DUE TO CLOSENESS OF TEAMS AND NATURAL RIVALRIES

BOSTON, NYI, NYR, BUFFALO, MONTREAL, OTTAWA, TORONTO, DETROIT

NJ, PHIL, PITTS, WASH, TAMPA, FLORIDA, COLUMBUS, CAROLINA

PACIFIC AND NW MAKE SENSE BECAUSE OF WHAT WAS NOT DONE IN CENTRAL AND ATLANTIC.

HOW THE HECK IS BOSTON CONSIDERED CENTRAL TO ANYTHING EXCEPT NEW ENGLAND????
