I believe Soderberg would have to play in a regular season game for the B's to qualify for the playoffs.I thought i read this somewhere so i am going totally on memory.

    Yes, I posted that earlier.

    http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2013/4/10/4209314/carl-soderberg-contract-boston-bruins

He will not require re-entry waivers, as the Bruins had him on their reserve list. In addition, he will be eligible to participate in the playoffs as long as he plays one regular-season game

I don't ever recall this happening before, the closest I can think of is some head butting with the KHL and that got resolved so I think this will, too.

As per Chiarelli's interview with Toucher and Rich the other morning "He does not need to play a regular season game to be eligible " NHL has an expcetion only this time around due to the shortened season.

So there is where the confusion lies, under normal circumstances Sods would have to play a regular season game.

Why doesn't he just come over now?

He said he isn't going to play in the WC.

Is there a rule that says he can't practice with the team?

I would think that showing up here would make a pretty loud statement to all parties involved.   It would show Sweden hockey he's in another country, it would demonstrate that he's going to show up after signing a contract.  After all, if you have a signed contract, you have to play right?  It's not like he'd be crazy enough simply to quit playing for a year, right?

    In response to winthecup's comment:

This is just a guess but earlier this season the Swedish Hockey Federation was complaining that players like Zibanejad and others weren't being made available for the World Junior Championships. Instead teams were sending them to the AHL to play, so it is probably just a little spite since they feel that the Swedish teams take a back seat to the needs of the NHL teams. Report this comment! Interesting post might explain things ,wouldn't expect NHL to change it's policies for Bruins.

Is this serious?  Of course the Sweedish teams take a backseat to the NHL!!!  The NHL is the employer.  The NHL is the players future.

Why the heck does Sweeden think that they have the right to complain about a player prioritizing his own future over playing in a tournament, that while is competitive, is just for fun at the end of the day.

It should be completely up to the player.  And if an NHL team says to a player, we'd rather you stay in teh AHL then go overseas, it should still be up to the player.  However, the player should probably err on the side of making his employer happy.

This is beyond rediculous.  This is Soderberg's life the Sweedish team is messing with.   They are trying to block Soderberg from capitalizing on a once in a lifetime opportunity out of spite?  Shame. Shame.  Shame.

THESE ARE HUMAN BEINGS!!!!  WHERE ARE THERE CIVIL RIGHTS????

The Sweedish federation is literally getting in the way of Soderberg's ability to work.  Some kind of international rights group needs to get involved here.  This sounds like communist, "we own you" bull.

I'm sure the NHL is in the process of leaning on the Swedes right now, doing little other than gently reminding them that the next obvious step is for Soderberg to hit the carpet, throw a tantrum, make the Swedish IHA out to be 'Dreamkillers.'

Not very good pre-World Championship hosting optics....

I have been to Sweden many many times.  Relatives living in there.  I can understand the Swedes wanting him to play in the worlds.  They are proud and patriotic people.  The worlds mean alot to them.  Next, the Swedes are not outward in public announcements.  So, when Soderberg said no to playing for Sweden.  I was taken back.  He clearly wants to play in the NHL.  So I agree he should be allowed to choose where he is to play.  The NHL needs to iron this out.

BTW Sweden may be a socialist 'middle way' country but they are not communists or even remotely close to being Cuba.

International hockey are just total idiots.  Why do they have their tournament at the same time as when SEL, KHL, AHL & NHL are in their playoffs (or close enough).  Actually college cuts it pretty close, too.  Why not do it in the summer?  More people would probably watch when their own pro leagues and kids aren't playing.

Agreed Crowls. They're trying to stand in the way of Soderberg making a million a year and that's just not right. He's done plenty for Swedish hockey simply by not bolting years earlier.

With Bill Daly on the case for the NHL, I have every confidence that Soderberg will be a Bruin. This is the guy who 'won' the lockout AND got the NHLPA to agree to this nearly inhumane 48 game schedule (the guys who built the pyramids had more time off).

Soderberg stopped from playing in the NHL

Carl Soderberg want to continue the season in the Boston Bruins.

But Hockey League will not approve the transfer of the VM aktuelle striker.

    - The Board has decided this evening to Carl's outlets in the squad and we want him to represent Sweden, says Hockey League vice-president Peter Forsberg.

      Calle Soderberg.  Calle Soderberg.

Carl Soderberg, 27, have poured into goals for Linkoping in the season.

    31 pieces.

A successful season and he has had an impact both nationally and internationally.

Of course, Boston, which owns the rights to the Swede, seen success and now they have signed a two-year contract with Carl and want to start using scorer immediately.

But Par Mårts and Tre Kronor want Carl Soderberg.

    - Carl is a player that we would like to have in the World Cup. He sits in a leghold trap and it's not so easy for a relatively young guy. We have never seen this before in the League. Players say no because they are damaged, not because they would rather play in the NHL, says team boss Tommy Boustedt.

    Settled at meeting tonight

Tonight was settled Söderberg fate on Ice Hockey Federation's board meeting.

And there it was decided that the IIHF will not approve the transfer of the VM aktuelle striker.

    - According to the agreement we have with the NHL, there is a clause which states that a player who has been selected in the national team should not play in the NHL. It is a matter of principle for us we release on this can start an avalanche of transitions after the season, said Peter Forsberg.

Can go to the NHL anyway

Carl Soderberg and NHL can choose to defy Hockey League decision, but it does so, the Söderberg not allowed to participate in international competitions in the future. Enables NHL to Soderberg play in North America already this season, it also more difficult to get to a new agreement between the IIHF and NHL. Negotiations have been underway in the spring.
