    UFA Target: James Wisniewski

What do you think of this signing?  James Wisniewski, former Islander and Hab.  PP specialist.

Obviously it's him instead of Tomas Kaberle.  But I think he's headed to Detroit.
Any talk of this in Minnesota?

I'm a bit concerned, given the fact that he's really only had one really good season as a puckmover/PP specialist.

According to KPD the Bruins won't be a big hunter but I'm hoping different.

I like it a lot actually.  Pitkanen and Brewer would be my 1st choices but Wiz would be there as well.
Draft Murphy tonight.  The future is so brite I gotta wear shades

    FWIW

Eric Engels Habs writer has said he would bet on Wisniewski signing in Detroit or Boston if Vegas would take the bet.

I posted the link on another thread but it's from his Twitter account.

Love it.  I wanted him instead of Kaberle this year (can't argue with any decisions when holding the Cup though).  I think he is really underrated and he would be a lot cheaper than Kaberle (I think).  He's good on the powerplay, is a good defender, and has a little bit of snarl too.

I would sign him and let Kaberle walk.

“We’re not sure where we are going,’’ said Chiarelli, referring specifically to Ryder and Kaberle. “We’re still in the planning stage, and granted, it’s a little late with July 1 around the corner. So, to be honest, we’re not at the doorstep [with offers], we’re kind of on the sidewalk right now.’’

    Uh sounds like window shopping...

No matter who PC takes with the #9 pick Ricky Chiarelli has to get a defenseman for depth if nothing else because Kampfer needs a bit more time. I also believe Kaberle will not take a pay cut "The price is wrong Tomas".

I would welcome Wiz with open arms. He is only 27 & has a cannon of a shot. Him & Chara on the point on the pp would be a nitemare for opposing teams.

Honest questions: Do you think KPD is a credible source? I personally wonder about him, he seems disinterested/out of touch (and has been for years). I can't imagine such a writer maintains credible contacts, but I'm used to being wrong.

Yes Ols I can't wait for "the original 30" to retire as well so Fluto gets the reigns. Just hoping PC doesn't wait to long once he's made his decesion on Tomas.

    Re: UFA Target: James Wisniewski

I'd like to sign both Wisniewski and Kaberle (Kaberle at a discount). This would give the PP several options, and with a summer to digest his experience Kaberle could be a 40-50 point man, and Wisniewski a 60 point man. Combine that with Big Z's 50 points, and that would be the top offensive D in the league, and not sacrificing much on D if Kaberle cuts down his miscues.

    Re: UFA Target: James Wisniewski

Is KPD a credible source??? He certainly has his bromides-- "Original 30" and Casey's "Technicolor 5 hole" are over the top and should be barred from his keyboard. However, you don't know much about the sport if you think he's not credible. He's in the hockey hall of fame, is a national hockey writer for the leading publication in arguably the best NHL market, and is generally respected around the league. This isn't a man-crush as I think Dupes is way off the market and a tad repetitive at times but ... you can't argue with his credentials. With the news business changing as it is, KPD and his advanced salary would be one of the first to be put out to pasture if he wasn't doing his job.

My main concern would be that this will be his 5th team in the last few years. Is there some issue with him that only a locker room would be aware of? He does possess great skill and would help us on the ice, however.

    Re: UFA Target: James Wisniewski

Just read in NHL dot com that Ryan Spooner tied for best stickhandler in a junior poll. I always thought he had great skill in that area, now I'm convinced that he's the next kid to crack the B's lineup, ahead of even Caron who needs a bit more seasoning because he's a big raw kid. Spooner could be next season's Brad Marchand, as far as skill level goes. All that makes me believe the B's should focus on shoring up their offense/pp from the back end, via Wisnieski, rather than the front end. I don't feel Kampfer is in our future, he's good trade bait though. Trade him for a project big center with some skill or a 2d, or high 3rd, round pick. And take the best player available in the draft, whether it's a forward or D. Go B's!

I'm surprised your so low on Kampfer.  I thought he was pretty awful defensively last year.  He seemed to be diving every time the opposing team came into the zone with any speed. I felt he weighed down Chara who had to watch his back when they were paired.  It also seemed that he was offensively gifted and willing to work hard enough to improve his D.  I certainly am not counting on him to be our future No. 1 Puck mover, but I do not dismiss the possibility either.  I think ideally he forces his way into our lineup next year as a 6th D after a battle with McQuaid, Bartkowski and the other prospects.  It seems Kampfer has the most upside from that group.

Unless they fire Geoff Ward, this team could have Borque and Orr in their prime at the point and the PP would still suck.

He'll be asking up and around 4+m.  I doubt 5m.
For sure Detroit is looking on adding a D and I get the feeling Pitkannen (sry if spelled wrong) will be their guy.  He really fits the profile of a Detroit D-man.
I actually like him also better than James Wisniewski.
Wisniewski has had 2 or 3 knee surgeries. Risky.
and I said I would not play armchair GM.  You guys s_ucked me in !

Kaberle doesn't want to sign a cap friendly , hometown dicount then we can expect PC trying for one of these two.
If not he'll deal with Kampfer and the rest of the D-corp that won a Stanley Cup.

Love the idea,......I wanted him and Brewer this year instead of Kaberle....think it wouldnt have cost as much either.......would be an incredibly solid defence corps then and would free up a body to move for future picks?

    Re: UFA Target: James Wisniewski

Kampfer strikes me as Matt Hunwick revisited. Just not big enough and therefore will be pushed off the puck. Plus he makes some mistakes that seem unforced. Sure, he can skate, and if he were 30 pounds heavier and able to knock guys off the puck I'd be more forgiving. But if we resign Kaberle (which I think Chiarelli will do to avoid criticism for the trade) I don't think we can afford another mistake challenged D man, especially with Boychuk still needing to mature.
