Re: Another Finals Appearance For Duncan

Well, let's see the Spurs close it out.

That said Duncan is clearly better than Garnett. I'm not sure what you would ask Garnett or the Celtics to do about that. Had we gotten that number one pick, we would have drafted Duncan just like the Spurs did. He's arguably the best player of his generation. If he picks up another ring this year that conversation will be more widespread.

KG is a truly great player but he's no Tim Duncan. Point made. Not sure what the implications of that point are for the Celtics though. It's like when guys talk about how Pop is better than Doc. Sure he is, Pop's better then everybody. So... what does that mean to Celtics and Celtics fans?

    nothing...

And remember the Spurs blew a 2 to 0 lead to the stinking Lakers in 04 when Fisher hit that crazy shot as time expired to go up 3 to 2. And Duncan had just hit that incredible shot with less then 2 seconds left. Both Popovich and Duncan say that might have been their best team.

Lets see,  he delivered when they needed him the most?   SA blew a 12 pt lead in the 4th quarter and if the Grizz hit one more free throw then the Spurs lose.  Duncan scored a huge ZERO PTS in the 4th quarter while blowing the lead.  I guess they didn't need him  most at that time.

Re: Another Finals Appearance For Duncan

Duncan played 31 minutes including overtime. Pop stayed true to his spread the minutes rules. By they way, Splitter is the starting center and played 34 minutes; very strong role player. Bonner put in 27 minutes and Diaw 12 minutes. Four players for the 5 and 4, pretty evenly spread.  So it's not just Coach Pops but also very much general manager Pops that allows San Antonio to prosper. Duncan was plus 22; he's just amazing.

There's no comparison. Duncan is a machine, one of the greatest players ever, and has a chance for a 5th ring. KG is just not in the same class. I kept trying to convince myself this was the case when KG arrived but it hasn't worked out, 1 ring and a bunch of blown opportunities. Sure, Ainge deserves some of the blame for the personnel, but even then if you switch Duncan and KG when the big 3 were formed, we're talking about 2-3 more championships.

How did I know this thread would somehow come around to Kevin Garnett?

Duncan is great.  Pop is the best coach in the league.  Parker is in his prime.  The supporting cast is very well built.  If a TEAM can beat Miami, that's them.

They are going to let their big 3 retire with a Spurs jersey on.  Respect.

It would be great to see the Spurs win another championship this year.

The Spurs will not blow a 2-0 series lead 2 years in a row.

Duncan scored 6 of the Spurs' 8 points in OT. He delivered when the team needed him the most.

The difference between Duncan and the Spurs and KG and the Celtics is Tim Duncan doesn't need another big man like Kendrick Perkins, Marcin Gortat, or Samuel Dalembert to be the team's enforcer. What that translates into is the Spurs don't need an additional 8-10m in cap space for another big man.

First, not true about needing another big man.  Duncan has had Robinson, Nesterovich, and now Splitter (who starts).  So, Duncan plays with another big man.  You're distorting your facts to make your point.

No need to distort the facts because no one will argue with the fact that Duncan is the best power forward to ever play the game.  Wheher its Barkley, McHale, Malone or anyone else - no one carries a team like Duncan.  So, why pick on KG?  He's not different than everyone else - not as good as the best ever.  So what?   Pierce is not as good as Michael Jordan.  DJ is not as good as Oscar Robertson.   So what?

Bird needed McHale and Parish.  Magic needed Jabbar, Worthy, and Scott.   Duncan needs Parker (who is the MVP of that team, by the way).  Even Michael needed Pippen and others.   Why in the world do you think KG is going to win without a healthy Pierce?

You keep making the same old argument, Fierce, and its not a rational one.  We all get that you think G should be someone different but you have to get over it.  He is NOT a big center and he's not as young as he was in his prime.  Between the two, he is NOT going to be a 25 point, 15 rebound big man making shots inside.  That does NOT negate the fact that he is a great, HOF player.

Re: Another Finals Appearance For Duncan

Well, KG is better than Duncan defensively. In fact, he's in a pretty incredible class of players when you factor in his defense. According to good ole wickipedia, "Michael Jordan, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Kevin Garnett are the only Defensive Player of the Year winners to have won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award during their careers; Jordan and Olajuwon won both awards in the same season. In Olajuwon's case, he is the only one to have also won the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award and the NBA championship in the same season."

By the way Fierce, please explain why KG "needed" Perk and PJ Brown, but Duncan didn't "need" Splitter (who is better than both Perk and PJ Brown)? this is not an attack; so keep it real (ie, civil)...we can criticize each other's thought process and keep it civil (if not convivial, like the "Country Club" board is know for).

Re: Another Finals Appearance For Duncan

Points well taken. Looked up Nesterovic's stats, fairly similar to Perk's on the surface. Intersting first name, Rasho.  In any case, I certainly agree that KG needs a big man banger like Perk, Rasho, whoever to compliment the optimal parts of his game on both sides of the floor. Danny, unfortunately, never really got KG what he needed after the Perk trade to maximize what KG brings.
