Boston Celtics Crazy Trade Idea: Rajon Rondo to Utah Jazz!

Boston Celtics Crazy Trade Idea: Rajon Rondo to Utah Jazz Yahoo Contributor Network  By Mark Evans2 hours ago

COMMENTARY | Full disclosure: There is no report here, and there's no reason to believe that this trade will actually happen. It's always fun to speculate a little, and that's all this is.

In this scenario, Rajon Rondo would be sent to the Utah Jazz, with the Boston Celtics receiving Gordon Hayward and Marvin Williams. The salaries would work, although Boston would likely need draft considerations as well. Coincidentally, the Jazz piled up some draft picks this summer when they chose to take on some salary.

Danny Ainge loves to have draft picks; just ask the Brooklyn Nets.

Brad Stevens coached Hayward at Butler University, where both experienced a ton of success. It's reasonable to believe that they could continue their work in Boston, where Stevens is already squeezing the most out of a limited roster. Williams, who only has one year left on his deal, would simply be thrown in to make the salary numbers work. He'd most likely ride the bench for the rest of the year until his contract runs out.

In Rondo, the Jazz would have a backcourt star to match with Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter. They did just draft Trey Burke, but it's hard to believe this would be enough for Utah to turn down Rondo. It's unclear exactly when Rondo will return from injury, so the Jazz would have some time to figure out their plan.

With Hayward and Jeff Green, the Celtics would have a pair of long, versatile, dynamic wing players. Their length would certainly be troublesome for opposing offenses, which could help make up for some defensive deficiencies amongst Boston big men. Depending on matchups, Stevens could use them at both forward positions in a small lineup, or with Hayward at shooting guard and Green at small forward for a more conventional lineup. It's always good to give a smart coach lineup flexibility.

It's weird saying this, but maybe Stevens really likes what Jordan Crawford brings to the team at point guard. If you haven't noticed, Crawford has been very good this season. Stevens runs an offense reliant on spacing; a Crawford, Hayward, Green, Jared Sullinger, and Kelly Olynyk lineup would really spread out opponents.

Of course, the Celtics would need to extend Hayward for this to make any sort of sense.

Extending Rondo will be pricey, and we're still not sure what to expect out of him. He will no longer be surrounded by Hall of Fame teammates to make shots, and he's still recovering from a torn ACL. For a team like the Jazz that probably can't build their team through free agency, gaining a star like Rondo is a win. With all of their draft picks, Boston may be more set on building through the draft.

Important question: Do we know that Rondo wants to stay in Boston long-term now that the Celtics are not a championship team? Maybe he would like a fresh start.

This will probably never happen, but it's fun to run through a hypothetical once in a while. Still, the Celtics would make out better here than they would trying to deal Rondo to the New York Knicks, which has been rumored.

I am not crazy about Marvin Williams! Jazz would have to include a draft pick!

Not a crazy idea at all.  Biedrins and Haywood is better because he comes off the books at the end of the year!

The big question - would Rondo sign a long term deal with Utah? I think Hayward would sign a long term deal with Boston!

i'd prefer a Heyward, Bierdrins, Rush, 1st round pick for Rondo and Lee deal.

Given that Gordon can pretty much force a sign-and-trade in the next 19 months, and given that Gordon could chose Brad as his next coach, wouldn't Danny more likely just wait a bit and get Gordon for draft picks and a couple good vets without giving up his allstar?

Why would a playoff team like the Celtics want to trade away their best, and only star player. Why would the worst team in the NBA want to give up young talent/picks for a PG returning from a significant injury?

Rondo is going nowhere. As soon as he gets back imto the full swing of playing he will be the leader of this team. I don't see why he wouldn't be up to the challenge. He gets along great with Brad Stevens so there really shouldn't be any head butting on the bench or locker room. Though he doesn't have HOF players around him any more he should make Green, Sullinger and AB better. Not to mention that Crawford is really coming into his own. Agree, not a playoff team just yet but not far away from being one sooner than later.

Without reading all the comments here.

This trade ABSOLUTELY needs to include Trey Burke.

Williams is just to make money work.

I think they could include GSW's draft pick in 2014. I doubt they relinquish their own unless its heavily protected.

    Burke / Crawford

    Hayward / Bradley

    Green / Wallace

    Bass / Olynyj

    Sullinger / Faverani

Thats a solid core. Add to that the Celtics, Nets and Warriers 2014 1sts ... and thats a super-young, super-solid team!

You all realize that there is no way Danny trades Rondo, unless the trading team's GM has an IQ level of Billy King.

Right now Rondo is in that elite class of guys who have spent their entire career with one franchise. That is the biggest selling point for the Celtics in resigning Rondo, keeping him in Boston.

Once you trade Rondo, especially to a Utah Jazz team, there's an infinitely smaller chance he stays with that team.

Limited intelligence Celtics fans can hate on Rondo, but its no secret that he would be one of the most requested teammates out there on the market. Think of how many stars would collude with Rondo to form a super team. Melo, Aldridge, an aging Kobe, Harden, Love. ...

Acutally, replying to my own post idea. With this trade we could have such a deep  man lineup:

    Starting Line-up

    Crawford

    Hayward

    Green

    Bass

    Favarani

    2nd Line-up

    Burke

    Bradley

    Wallace

    Olynyk

    Sullinger

This does not include Lee, Williams, or our three rookies who would be exellent bench options as well. Imagine if (somehow) we are able to get Embiid, Seldon and Saric in the draft:

    Third String Line-up

    Seldon

    Lee

    Williams

    Saric

    Embiid

I honestly don't know which line-up would be better. Tell me this isn't a complete 15 man roster?

Is Rondo worth max money to this team? Bradley worth 8mill a year? $$$$ could be the reason Rondo and Avery are moved and it could be soon or later.

Garbage trade unless we get utah's 1st rd pick THIS year. Im not that crazy about gordon haywards game. Fans are so sentimental, as soon as we get brad stevens everyone wants to trade for the ONE butler player in the nba(ok 2 , counting shelvin mack). We already got our sg of the future in AB.

Plus y would we trade rondo NOW? He is under control  till next season. Let him play under stevens for a full year and then decide at NEXT years trade deadline. We get to evaluate him under the new system with our current young nucleus, rondo gets to rebuild his value. Its a win/win.
