    Celtics pursuing Fernandez

Ok so Fernandez is making a paltry $1.2M and 1 year left on his deal.

I don't see what we can trade to the Blazers that will match up unless it's Nate or Daniels or a draft pick. Where is there a salary that matches up?

I doubt they move Przybilla since he was hurt and not sure of Oden's status.

Batum & Fernandez for BBD works. Sheed comes back.

    Re: Celtics pursuing Fernandez

The C's could do it two ways.

    1) Trade Sheed to Cleveland in a S&T for Shaq for say $5.1m and get back a PTE from the Cavs for $1.2m to be use to acquire Fernandez.

    2) Send Sheed to Portland for Fernandez and get back a $5.1m PTE to be used on another player elsewhere.

    Per the CBA:

Teams can consume only part of a Traded Player exception, in which case they can still use the remainder in a future trade. For example, if a team trades a $4 million player for a $2 million player, they gain a $2.1 million Traded Player exception. If they later trade a draft pick for a $1 million player, they still have $1.1 million remaining to acquire more players and complete the trade (until one year from the date of the original trade).

    Just heard this on WEEI:

    > The Oregonian reports that the Blazers are talking to the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Chicago Bulls about trading for Fernandez, the 25-year-old Spaniard who set a rookie record when he made 159 three-pointers two seasons ago.

"Some of the teams interested in Fernandez have offered a future first round draft pick, while other offers would pair Fernandez with another Blazers player," the paper reports. <

Thoughts on his defense; same for Pryzbilla? Sheed plus what gets the two of them? Seems a lot better than Delonte and Shaq (although I'd take those two as well).

Hey guys what do you think of this 3 team trade?

    1)Portland gets:

    Sheed´s contract

    2)Boston gets:

    Shaq and Rudy Fernandez

    3)Cleveland gets:

    Joel Przybilla

I believe(i dont know if this trade works)
that is a win-win situation for all the teams

we get 2 players we need
cleveland gets a C to play there(they dont have any REAL center rightnow)
    and portland cap relieve

    what do you think?
    it´s possible?

    Re: Celtics pursuing Fernandez

Wouldn't we rather have Przy than Shaq? A simultaneous trade of Sheed for bodies could bring back $8m in new bodies especially if we spice it up with a 2nd rounder. You know how Portland loves their draft picks, haha!

    Sheed ($8m) + 2nd Rd Pk ($.5m) = Przy ($7.4) + Fern ($1.2m)

The local sports page online in Portland has posters wanting Sheed and BBD for Rudy and Joel ... that's $9-11m for $8.6 back (no drft pk).

This (Przy & Rudy) could be the deal Danny's been waiting for .... another big and a shooting guard, go gettem Danny!

    Re: Celtics pursuing Fernandez

    Player Scouting reports:

    Rudy: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Rudy-Fernandez-22/

Defense doesn’t look like a high priority for Rudy at this point. He’s not the most aggressive on-ball defender, and he’s not putting much energy into stopping his matchups. Enjoying a much larger offensive role this year, he’s probably saving some efforts. He’s a skinny guy who might get eventually outmuscled, but his length and quickness make up for it whenever he’s focused on this department. He fully takes part in the intense gambling style of defense that his team employs, staying aggressive in the passing lanes at all times to come up with a large amount of steals each game. Joventut is by a huge margin the team with the best steal/turnover ratio in the ACB league, and Rudy replicates this trend by coming up with more steals than turnovers during the regular season. However, in this Copa he caused 13 turnovers, with only 3 steals to speak of.

    Joel Przybilla

Overview:A big, strong, defensive-minded center that doesn’t much to the table offensively. Has great size and strength for a center, even in NBA terms. Not an elite level athlete by any means, but shows good athleticism for a player his size. Was never that productive on the offensive end. Shows some tools, but has never been able to develop a consistent repertoire. Plays within himself more so than he used to. Makes a living with his defense. Blocks shots and especially grabs rebounds at a superb rate. Filled essentially the same role in his two years at Minnesota. Got drafted in the top-ten by virtue of his defensive abilities, size, and potential. Never developed the offensive game to be a more complete player. Bounced around the League before finding a home in Portland. Can be a great asset off the bench due to his size and aggressive mentality.

Offense: A pure role-playing offensive player that scores fairly efficiently without having any plays called for him. Does most of his damage by working on the glass and moving without the ball. Has essentially no jump shot. Shoots the ball from his chest without a lot of touch. Does all of his damage within a couple feet of the rim. Shows the ability to read his teammates and get into position to receive the ball for easy baskets. Offers a huge target when he flashes to the middle. Fights for position on the block and always goes after offensive rebounds. Size, strength, and aggressiveness make him one of the game’s top rebounders. Never shy about initiating contact. Goes to the line at a solid rate relative to his minimal touches. Has improved his free throw shooting over time. Turns the ball over at an alarming rate relative to the amount of touches he receives, amongst the worst in the NBA. Doesn’t have a very good left hand, but can finish over his left shoulder on the block. A true banger that sets good (sometimes moving) screens, works hard, but isn’t going to do much damage when he has to create his own shot. Not a glamorous option offensively, and is far from a feature talent, but can be a decent complementary player in the post.

Defense: A solid defender that is good for a few blocks, a ton of rebounds, and a handful of fouls every game. Doesn’t do a great job using his strength defensively. Will allow his man to get position on the block by sagging too far into help side. Will fight for position when he knows the ball is about to be entered. Won’t give up an inch as soon as his man has the ball. Will force his man to miss some easy shots by being physical and not falling for a lot of fakes. Gets most of his fouls by reaching over the top of shooters when he’s beat. Does a good job going straight up with he maintains position. Won’t hedge many screens. Very aggressive when going after rebounds. Outstanding at cleaning up the defensive glass. Will block some shots on and off the ball.
Very nice option defensively due to his ability to contest shots and rebound, but needs to do a better job keeping the ball out of his man’s hands.

Him and Perk must have the worse record when it comes to turnovers ... Yikes!
But he is a BANGER and REBOUNDER so he fills a need. Shaq ownes him though!

The Boston Celtics are currently in the ‘lead position’ in negotiations with the Portland Trailblazers for Rudy Fernandez, according to a source. They have been in serious discussions since yesterday.

Other teams interested including New York and Chicago, but the Celtics are apparently getting the first shot, thus allowing one to assume they are a preferred destination, either in terms of desirability for Rudy or trading pieces for the Blazers. Celtics Blog

That's great but I can't see Danny giving Bradley away for Rudy when he has Sheed's contract worth up to $8m and can put in up to $3m cash and/or a 2nd rounder to get it done ... it would have to be for Rudy and a big or a PTE to go back and acquire Shaq from the Cavs.

I'm not sure if the 1st trade will work, but the 2d most def would not. You cannot have two teams as far over the cap as both boston and Portland are swapping a 6 million salary for a 1 million salary. They have to be within 125% give or take 100k of each other.

    Re: Celtics pursuing Fernandez

Gaffney and Sheed for Przybilla and Rudy works.

Even w/ a savings of around 9 million whn you include the lux tax, I assume Boston would have to give up a pick for this to happen. Both players are solid bench guys.

When is Przybilla going to return?

This article says he is on sched, but timetable unknown: http://blog.oregonlive.com/blazers/2010/05/you_be_the_gm_joel_przybilla_2.html

I prefer him to Shaq. He is VERY tall an can give us 4p 7r and a block in 16-18 mins down the stretch, aggressive guy who protects the rim. Would be better to throw at LA's bigs than Baby was.

I don't like the idea of Marquis playing backup SF. But thru Feb I am fine with it. Then we'd have his and Baby's exp contracts at 6m to try and get that taller defensive Sf we'll need to be a tite contender

That's what the "player traded exception" is for... teams over the cap can send a $5m player for a $4m player and get a PTE back for $1m to acquire another player or the player traded can bring back other players up to 125% plus $100k of the player sent in the trade as long as the trade is consumated all at one... I read that as with one or more teams as long as the entire trade is done simultaneously.

So we could bring Cleveland into the deal if Przy is not on the table and include Shaq and/or Moon with picks, cash and other Portland players.

I think just the opposite.  DA is proceeding as best he can because he DOESN'T know what's up with Sheed. The negotiations are about what Fernandez costs - period.

They might be of the opinion that Quis can guard the smaller 3's and Harangody the bigger 3s.
