    DA Please Draft Giannis Adetokunbo!

This Kid Has a Huge Upside - Star Potential!

Thanasis and Giannis began to play basketball casually together around 2003. As fate would have it, the two were spotted one day by Spyros Veliniatis, a coach from Filathlitikos academy who is an avid cycling enthusiast and happened to biking by their local basketball court. Veliniatis was immediately taken aback by the immense physical gifts the children displayed, and invited the two to join the academy, the only club in Athens that does not charge a membership fee to participate. Considering the family's financial background, this was fortunate.

    Video Analysis:

Thanasis and Giannis enrolling in the academy coincided with the team progressing rapidly up the Greek minor league system, being promoted six times in ten years from the D regional division of Athens all the way up to A2, the second league of Greece. Filathlitikos now finds themselves on the doorstep of A1, the top league in Greece, as they are in first place with a 14-3 record more than halfway through the season.

Most of Filathlitikos's success has come thanks to the homegrown talent they developed and integrated onto their roster over the years, with head coach Takis Zivas coaching both the club's senior and U18 team since its inception 15 years ago. Many of the club's young players are the sons and daughters of immigrants from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Albania and Nigeria.

Thanks to the Adetokunbo's arrival, Greek basketball might have the most interesting prospect the country has seen in many years on their hands. Despite never having played for any of Greece's youth (U16, U18, U20) national teams in an official capacity, Giannis has drawn considerable interest as of late both in his home country and abroad, with eight NBA teams already having traveled to see him. An invitation to the senior national team is reportedly in the works for this summer, if his citizenship issues can be resolved of course.

After watching a considerable amount of film from his play in the second division and U18 league, we decided to take a trip out to Athens ourselves to see what all the fuss was about. It turned out to be very valuable use of our time.

Adetokunbo stands out first and foremost thanks to the tremendous physical profile he brings to the table, reminding somewhat of aNicolas BatumorThabo Sefoloshaon first glance. He has great size at 6-9, 196 pounds, to go along with a developed upper body and an overall terrific frame that should fill out considerably in time. His wingspan has reportedly been measured at 7-3, but perhaps most interesting is the size of his hands, as he's able to palm the ball like a grapefruit which helps him out considerably as a passer, ball-handler and finisher.

Danny Ainge scouting 6-10 PG in Greece (Giannis Adetokunbo) Jay April 6, 2013 Celtics NewsDraft NewsRumors 15 Comments

According to a report from Sheridanhoops.com, Danny Ainge has been in Greece scouting a 6-10 point guard named Giannis Adetokunbo.

In the latest installment of “Catch a Rising Star,” Boston Celtics president Dany Ainge traveled to Greece to get a first-hand look at Giannis Adetokunbo, the 6-foot-10 point guard who is moving up draft boards by leaps and bounds.

Ainge was in the house — and got heckled by Lakers fans — as Adetokunbo scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds and two steals in the championship round of the Greek A2 league.

Ainge also saw the CSKA-Panathinaikos Euroleague game, an qs quoted by Greek media as comparing Adetokundo as reminding him of a young Scottie Pippen.

So who is this Greek freak? And why is he surfacing on the draft radar so late in the process?

For one thing, Adetokunbo grew up as an undocumented immigrant of Nigerian ancestry, and he does not currently hold a passport. That may change in the weeks ahead, as both the Greek and Nigerian national federations are trying to secure him for their national teams, and Adetokunbo’s next big test — should that passport arrive — would be an appearance at the NBA pre-draft Eurocamp in Treviso, Italy.

Aside from getting heckled by Lakers fans (although the thought that there were enough Lakers fans at a random Greek league game is gross), this is Ainge at his best.  Danny is always looking around the globe for the best talent around, despite the position.  While it’s kind of crazy that this guy is already being compared to a young Scottie Pippen, if that’s even a relatively accurate comparison, sign me up!  The piece goes on to suggest that he is projected to be selected in the top 24, well within the C’s range in the first round.  It’s far too soon to begin to evaluate potential draft picks since there are a handful of regular season games left as well as playoffs.  But this is intriguing for sure.  Stay tuned for any updates.  Below is a video from Draft Express, highlighting this mysterious man (err, kid):

Greek Freak, 6-10 PG, Draws NBA Execs to Athens

GreekFreakThe best-kept secret in NBA scouting circles in a secret no more.

Meet Giannis Antetokoumpo, a 6-10 point guard who already has signed to play professionally next season for Zaragoza in Spain.

Yes, a 6-10 point guard, a Greek freak of Nigerian heritage who could end up being a first-round draft pick after putting on quite a show in the Greek national junior tournament attended by Bryan Colangelo of the Toronto Raptors and Masai Ujiri of the Denver Nuggets.

Antetokoumpo had 33 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals to lead the junior club Filathlitikos into the finals against Panathinaikos’ junior team. It was a breakout performance from the child prodigy, who reportedly grew up living illegally in Greece his entire life after his mother emigrated from Nigeria. His 20-year-old brother, Thannasis, a 6-foot-7 small forward, also is considered an NBA prospect.

Oklahoma City’s Sam Presti and Houston’s Daryl Morey, among others, also have been to Athens to scout Antetokoumpo, whose contract with Zaragoza is said to contain an affordable buyout clause.

Oh, and he has a 7-3 wingspan.

The Greek and Nigerian basketball federations are both trying to register Antetokoumpo to play for their respective national teams, and Antetokoumpo is expected to participate at the NBA pre-draft Eurocamp in Treviso, Italy.

Here is a scouting report video from DraftExpress, which has Antekoumpo ranked No. 33 in the site’s Top 100:

I got burned by a guy like this before. Yi Jianlian. Level of comp is extremely important in scouting.

This is why i prefer Russ Smith, Gorgui Deng or Mitch McGary in that order. Russ is a Dwayne Wade.

McGary is a Kevin Love type.

Deng is a Serge Ibaka type.

If they draft him, it will be fun listening to Tommy trying to pronounce his name.

    [/QUOTE

It would be! I am guessing Tommy would revert to GA after a few attempts.

The Cs will need a bit of luck in the draft to get back on top. If they get a kid with star potential in the middle of this years draft, it would be HUGE!

Down-side, he likely will not be NBA ready for a few years!

Do you think Ben McLemore will slide to the Celtics at 17?

I think the Celtics will be poppin some tags this summer at the thrift shop like they usually do.

AND the Lakers will be sitting at home without a draft pick! Thanks Mitch!!!!

I am guessing the Cs take the best available player in this years draft, versus drafting to fill a position of need. I hope Gianni's is there at 16!

ALSO, if KG retires, and DA makes a few moves, the Cs could end up with Big Al!

Rondo, AB, JG, Sully, and Big Al! Not a bad line-up for a rebuilding team! AND if Giannis and Melo develop, the future gets even brighter for the Cs!

5 out of 13.....38% part of a regular rotation
