    Re: Matt Barnes

Sounds like Orlando is holding him captive to playing for a non-contender from the East unwilling (or unable) to do a S&T for $5-6m ... maybe what ATL would have done to the C's had the C's made an offer to Childress of a similar nature.

So no S&T leaves only the Cavs ... a mercenary for a lost cause or hello LA, Mavs, C's or Heat for the VM.

Ah, decisions, decisions ... Hate to say it but he better take the Cadaver Dollars, it may be his last chance for a major payday.

Cavs can offer close to 5 million... they may overpay just to get someone in there

/> The Cavaliers can offer the most money by far of any of the teams that Barnes is considering. Cleveland has its full mid-level exception for next season, $5.8 million, to use to sign players.

Still, even half of the mid-level is more than the Celtics, Lakers or Heat can offer Barnes, and Cleveland, according to a league source, was hoping to get a deal done as soon as possible.

The most that the capped-out Celtics and at-the-cap Heat can offer Barnes at the moment is $1.146 million, the minimum for veterans with seven seasons of NBA experience. The Lakers have about $1.8 million remaining of their mid-level exception after signing free agent guard Steve Blake from the Clippers earlier this month. (Monday night's NBA.com report on Barnes incorrectly stated the Lakers had $2.3 million of their mid-level remaining.)

I'd love to see Barnes in there. I thought a few years ago he was the perfect replacement for Posey. TA was a liability on O. Worst ball handler i have ever seen @ the wing....Red always liked instigaters. That is Barnes in a nutshell. So what would the 2nd unit look like?

Robinson, Bradley, Barnes, BBD & O'Neal (when Perk is Healthy?)
     or...
Robinson, Barnes, Harangody, BBD, O'Neal (or Sheed)

That 2nd group i mentioned is a bruising unit.....

    I agree!

If we had Barnes, J' Oneal, and if Sheed came back, I would be very happy!

We need Sheed back to have a decent big man rotation, especially if Perk never plays the same again.

RealGM is reporting Barnes is leaning towards taking less money and playing for a contender.

"Barnes could make more money with a team like the Cavaliers, but could opt for less to play for a championship"

LOL - Love seeing how the Cavs have completely dropped off the face of the Earth.

I would be shocked if he came to Boston. Think of the cities he's played in...warm, sunny. He's a Cali boy.

I say it's the LA Lakers but I hope I'm wrong.

Last I read on RealGM was Otis Smith (Magic GM) says a S&T is unlikely.  Even under a S&T it can only be for $2m or less.  So it's down to 5 teams; TOR CLE BOS LAL MIA.  Doesn't seem anyone can sign him to big money with maybe the exception of CLE (not sure where their cap status is at).

Matt Barnes is a reality tv star first and basketball player second.  This is why I don't want him in Boston.  He's carrying on like LeBron James, but someone should remind him he's still just Matt Barnes.

If he gets 5 million, someone's overpaying...but then again, that seems to be a trend this offseason.

    Re: Matt Barnes

The Cavs are back in the race for Matt Barnes, according to a source close to him. Just how much in the chase, well, that is a matter of negotiation. The Cavs are believed to have offered Barnes a multiyear contract but for less than the Raptors offered. Though Toronto and Orlando still are trying to find a way to make the Barnes deal happen, it doesn't seem likely. At the moment, the Cavs, who have their entire $5.8 million midlevel exception to spend, can pay Barnes more than the Raptors can or more than the Magic can in a sign-and-trade. The Raptors already have spent a bulk of their midlevel on forward Linas Kleiza. Cleveland Plain Dealer

Five teams remain in the running to sign free-agent swingman Matt Barnes, according to sources with knowledge of Barnes' thinking. Toronto is still one of those teams, sources told ESPN.com, despite the collapse of a sign-and-trade deal with Orlando that Barnes thought would be completed by now. ESPN.com

One source close to process said early Wednesday that Barnes continues to weigh interest from the Raptors along with the Cleveland Cavaliers and three title contenders he has been negotiating with since last week: the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. ESPN.com

The Raptors have not abandoned their pursuit and remain determined to sign the defensive specialist, sources said, but that would require Barnes to accept lesser terms than he expected. Since Toronto recently spent the bulk of its $5.8 million mid-level exception to sign Linas Kleiza, it doesn't have the available funds to sign Barnes outright to a deal that starts in the neighborhood of $4 million. ESPN.com

The Magic are prevented by salary-cap rules from starting a sign-and-trade deal for Barnes at higher than $1.9 million, because Orlando doesn't have Barnes' full Bird rights after employing him for only one season. A sign-and-trade deal would also have to span at least three years, although only the first year is required to be guaranteed. ESPN.com

This guy is a diva who has forgotten he's Matt Barnes.  I feel rotten that the Celtics have put themselves in this position to play "wait and see" with HIM.  We have allowed this bum to hold us hostage while he gets his 15 minutes of fame.

Honestly, I'd love if we got Rasual Butler because Barnes was an instigator last season who never got into any player's head.  He faked throwing the ball at Kobe's face and Kobe didn't flinch.  He's an instigator and we have too many "trash talkers" now.  Butler would simply come out, play hard and keep his mouth shut.

Barnes' 15 minutes of fame is really turning me off on the guy.

Although it's the Lakers, I don't blame the guy.  He's totalled $7.7 million in seven seasons so taking $1.9 might be his best option if he wants to compete for a title.

On the flip side, he should look at that as what he truly means to a team, value-wise.  Quit acting like a diva and commit to a team.  It's not that big a deal.
