NBA THINK TANK TO STOP TANK

    SAY HELLO TO THE WHEEL

Interesting read on a proposal they are mulling over.  Wouldn't go into effect for about 10 years or so.

"they should just go back to draft position based on record like the other sports.."

They are trying to address tanking which is a far more serious problem in the NBA than other sports. Your idea improves transparency but makes tanking significantly worse.

It should be totally random. Only you cannot win the #1 2 years in a row. #1 and #2 would swap automatically if it comes up that way. The random nature of it leads to an inherent fairness.

If a team has a stroke of good fortune the salary cap makes their good fortune temporary. Like OKC, they can't keep them all!!!

Awful idea and actually easier to fix...they should just go back to draft position based on record like the other sports...everyone knows the lottery was a way to get Ewing to the Knicks...it's time to dump it entirely.

    [/QUOTE]

Agree with you.  The other sports just award draft picks based on your record.  That is really the fairest way to assign the draft.  The current system isn't very good and definitely not the proposed system.

maybe the NBA should consider making the salary cap more like the NFL's.

set a REAL cap that teams cannot go over.

set a REAL salary minimum for teams as well.

this would take care of the "tanking" so-called problem ( I personaly think the bigger problem is the always poor teams have LOUSY management), as teams will have to spend say 85% of the cap each year.

of course if the NBA would ever go with this type of salary cap, the smaller market teams would need more profit sharing from the larger market teams or to disband.

I think the NFL  salary cap has proven to be the best template of all the pro sports in the US to date.

Re: NBA THINK TANK TO STOP TANK

The lottery was instituted to discourage tanking, the thinking being that there'd be less incentive to tank if seven teams had a random shot at the 1st pick rather than the two worst records in each conference flipping a coin to get number one.

Of course, this just provided more teams with motivation to tank.  A weighted lottery system has not seemed to help.

It might be nice to see US pro leagues go to a club system like European soccer or major league baseball where promising players are brought up through a team's minor league system.

This would of course be a horrible thing financially for college basketball.

Re: NBA THINK TANK TO STOP TANK

If the lottery were run on the up and up, in full view of the public with the correct number of the same (non-weighted) balls, no one would be looking for a better system.  However, in the Stern era, so much chicanery has occured that it's been a joke.  Ewing to NY, James to Cleveland, and on and on, everyone found help but Boston.  The tanking matter aside.  Maybe draft position should be determined by the lowest composite points scored by a team's best (highest average) three players. The players' egos (and salaries) would probably take care of any intentional individual tanking.  Think Melo, the rapist, LaQueen, et al would throw bricks for the team?

Re: NBA THINK TANK TO STOP TANK

The NBA draft lottery has been a joke from its inception.

Clearly time to just return to the team with the worst record getting the first pick just like all the other professional leagues do.  Cripes, even our local little league gives last year's last place team the first pick in the next year's draft.
