No Jeff Green??

Maybe I'm late on this, but didn't see any other post about it. I just saw that the Celtics rescinded their qualifying offer to Jeff Green in mid-December.
As I understand it, the qualifying offer allowed the Celtics to retain his rights and he'd be a restricted free-agent after this season.
Now, he'll be an unrestricted free agent.
Am wondering why this happened and if there is any benefit whatsoever to it?

No cap hold for the $6M QO or $9M that was voided. Most likely the way things have gone down, Green will be the last player signed next season with Bird rights by the C's, putting them over the cap with a mutually acceptable contract to both parties, allowing Green to make a comeback ... say 1 yr @ $5M with a team option for a 2nd year. Odd's are no other team will risk a deal and he won't really want to leave after being taken care of here.
