Possible Other Reason for Struggling Defense?

Many posts here have blamed the trade of Kendrick ("Technical Foul") Perkins for the Celtics' less intimidating defense of late.  Is it possible that the departure of the C's defensive guru, Tom Thibodeau is a more crucial factor than the loss of Perk?

Our defense isnt necessarily our biggest problem. Points-wise , we're still holding opponents down... I think our issue is offense & bench support.

I think that this might be true. Their defense was a coordinated effort. There are also a lot of new guys. As much as a player can learn a defense, it is different than having a coach there to keep it right.

    defense isn't the problem

with a nice bounceback year from KG (2nd in defensive player of the year voting), we're a top-2 defense, with or without perk or thibs.

that said, if we'd kept thibs, perk and TA (top 5 in DPOY voting), we could've replicated or even improved on our historically good defense of our championship season

[QUOTE]Struggling defense. The Knicks scored 85 the first game and shot like 35% in game 2. You mean rebounding and no bench scoring? You do realize the Knicks averaged over 105 points a game.

Stats don't lie. It is still a very good defense, but as an observer of this defense there are breakdowns that weren't happening in the past. Rebounding might help this team more than anything. They are likely being forced to play too much defense.

On average they gave up fewer points per game since the trade than before the trade.  The problem always has been and continues to be the pathetic offense.

The offense in the last 30 games or so is about 8 or 9 points per game lower than it was in the prior games this season.

p.s. there is a direct correlation between the baby with a p oo p oo in his diaper and the absolutely pathetic offense......  they have given up 89 ppg against the Knicks who are 16 ppg below their average - so it must be the defense... lmao....oh but they have averaged a whopping 91 ppg against the Knicks.....hmmmm.....  91 should get it done against everyone, right?...... lmao

Yeah, baby looks tired.  Too many minutes absorbed while resting the big 4.  I'd rather have seen KG at the 5 and green at the 4 to close the game.

Re: Possible Other Reason for Struggling Defense?

To me, defense is about keeping your opponent's score low.  If your individual opponent doesn't score alot, the team will not score alot.

If the Celtics' opponents score 90 points per game, we don't have a problem with defense.  If the Celtics' opponents score 90 points per game and we are struggling to finish off these opponents and are losing in some of these games, that tells me that we have a problem with our offense.

We have THREE players in Ray, Paul and KG who have made a career out of having the ability to score whenever they wanted.  They may not be able to fill it up like 5 years ago, but there is no way that during a game, either of them should not be able to take over.  I honestly cannot believe how Ray can't have a 10-12 point first quarter with KG having a 10 point 3rd quarter and Pierce taking us home with a 12-14 point fourth quarter.  They are capable of doing that.

We have too many offensive options to be this inept.

Re: Possible Other Reason for Struggling Defense?

The Celtics biggest issue on defense this post season has been when Big Baby is our only "Big" man on the floor; they are out rebounded at both ends, and the Knicks have dominated second chance scoring. A small fast bench out on the floor does no good without the ball...JO or Krstic have to be on the floor...3 minutes playing time for Krstic is not nearly enough. What bothers me is how long the small lineup was left on the floor in the first half.

But they fought hard and one despite the problems, GO CELTS!!

Re: Possible Other Reason for Struggling Defense?

Doc is only now finding an answer to the slack off Rondo defense; that answer is to iso Rondo on a wing and let him drive/dish, go up to the elbow dish/shoot, or (as he did yesterday) post up his man. Baby has forgotten to shoot with some arc, he's throwing line drives that have litte chance of getting down inside the cylindar. KG has been very tentative but Doc using him to close out the game should give him a lift. Paul and Ray have looked fine. I look for the Celtics to close this out in 4 or 5 games and the offense to improve as they go along.
