Who is to blame: Lebron or the league for anointing him the next MJ

Who is to blame for Lebron's failures? Himself or the league for trying to market him as the next MJ? Which he is clearly not. Lebron is a good basketball player, but he still should not be mentioned with the likes of Bird, Magic, Kobe, MJ, etc. And not because he has not won a title, but he lacks the drive and the ability to make those around him better. And let's be honest, at his stage in his young career, how is he going to handle being Wade's shadow.

Mostly on Lebron. He came IN TO the league dubbed "King James", and embraced it. He has never shown humility and has often lacked in class. LEBRON said "not six, not seven...". Lebron called his pending free agency one of the biggest days in the history of the NBA, and has regularly celebrated his own big plays (Remember the deep 3 to win against ORL 3/4 years ago? And him stating "you'll be seeing that shot for a long time..." yeah, haven't seen it since a s s h o l e). He embraces the spotlight, nd has never deflected any comparisons to MJ.

Lebron also deserves the blame for the economy, fighting in the middle east, and world hunger. He s u c k s.

I've never heard LeBron, the League, or Stern said he was the next MJ.  But I did hear the media, Scottie Pippen, and Lebron fans say it.

you know, Kobe and LeBron have a lot in common....neither could lead their team to a championship upon their arrival.....think of it....who came in and almost immediately led their teams to the promised land? .....well I can think of a few......Bill Russell...Lew Alcinder......Dave Cowens.....Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.....Hakeem maybe....Kobe? .....nope......"Robin" to Shaq's "Batman".....finally helped run Shaq out of town....but couldn't lead the team to the championship until Pau came along....LeBron? ....well he did lead his team into the Finals twice....but even as part of the new "Big Three"....close but no cigar.....remember the legends that did carry their teams....they are few and far between.....

You can always depend on objective analysis about Lebron and Kobe from Heat-hating, Lakers-despising sore losing Celtics fans.

well, regarding Kobe...if Shaq doesn't leave Orlando for LA..? ....no three-peat!....if Memphis doesn't trade Pau to LA...? ....no repeat.....LeBron can't win by himself....although he has no excuses after these finals....but really....Kobe would have no rings based on what he showed during his time in LA when either Shaq or Pau were absent....think about that....Kobe has 5 rings as he begins his 16th season....think about that....he has always been "Robin"

The only blame rests on the shoulders of the fans/media that bought all the hype, dont truly understand basketball and dismissed what their eyes were showing them.

Up until this year, Ive always had problems with Lebrons game and felt he was greatly over rated... made many posts to that regard. This season (mostly 2nd half) hes become a much better team player and I appraciated his overall game much better.

Lebron also has to shoulder much of the blame for his hype. Who put that tat across his shoulders "CHOSEN ONE"???  Talk about an egomaniac..

WHo speaks about himself the way Lebron does??

Well, everyone knows all the celebrations he did in Cleveland and hotdogging etc, etc, etc..

Lebron, the media, the NBA & the fans all went along with the marketing..... and refused to look objectively at his game.  Dunks, blind side shot blocks...big time stats... thats what they saw and people like Pippen & CC (on our forum) fawning all over him as the GOAT...

    Seems funny now
In Response to Re: Who is to blame: Lebron or the league for anointing him the next MJ : Pippen's comment was the beginning of the end for Lebron. The league needed someone to hang their hat on, Kobe was great but I think his time is nearly over.  And Lebron is no Kobe.
    Posted by antiqueman1
I agree with you about the league needing someone else to take Kobe's place once he is retired.  Maybe Kevin Durant will emerge as the best player in the league or someone else that isn't even in the NBA yet.

Lebron has been someone's potential meal ticket since he was in Jr. High. He has had somebody "taking care" of him since. His single working class mom bought a Hummer when he was a junior in high school so who was there to guide him and pull him away from the all the hype? Nobody. Lebron swallowed everything put before him and never stopped to chew things through in his mind. The league is just keeping their sponsors and TV distributors happy. Gatorade,Nike,Coca Cola et al are just marketing their investment for maximum exposure and profits. You can't really blame any one entity it's just the new American way, style before substance and grab as much cash before people realize the difference. Lebron should probably read the old fable; The Kings New Clothes.

In fairness to Kobe and Lebron MJ could not deliver a title either upon arrival into the league. It took several years before his first title. He did have to deal with the Celtics, Pistons and Lakers. All three of these teams would have destroyed every team the Bulls beat in the finals.

Not for nothing MJ beat the Lakers for his 1st ring, the only way that he would play the Lakers is in the finals. You were right about Detroit and us,though,he didn't beat either when they were healthy.
