rather than using subjective opinionizing, some mathematical folks recently actually did some statistical analysis and was confirmed on espn's first take what i have always known about the most underappreciated, underrated, disrespected mega-star in the HISTORY of professional sports... PAUL PIERCE IS THE GREATEST PLAYMAKER/CLUTCH SHOOTER COMBO IN THE GAME TODAY!
in no particular order, it came down to carmelo anthony, kobe, ginobili, pierce, wade, dirk novitski, and steve nash. it was based on taking the big shot to tie or win a game within 5 seconds or less.. carmelo actually has the HIGHEST percentage at almost 50% in those situations but his body of work is not very large [lus he turns the ball over a lot in those situations too. kobe actually has the WORSE percentage of all 6 guys at 23%.. yes, that's right at 23 freakin percent! perhaps he should be looking for derek fisher more often rather than shoot with 4 guys on him while falling out of bounds all the time. but because kobe is asss kissed so often and is on TV so much and has made some spectacular shots in the past the perception far exceeds the REALITY!
dirk simply does not bring a lot of breadth to the table. its jump shot or forget it. easy to defend and to get the ball out of his hands. same with nash although he can also make the big pass to others when not turning the ball over in those situations.
according to the commentators (esp jalen rose), pierce is the BEST because he can do it all and is the most unstoppable and unguardable force apart from michael jordan in the HISTORY of the game in such situations. if you get too close he can step back as he did over 7 feet tall stoudemire, he can blow past most guys, has the body type that can easily attract fouls to put him on the line (where he shoots around 80%), can create for others off the dribble, can get the defender up in the air with a head or ball fake and other fundamentals, and can go after his or others' missed shots due to his body type, explosive jumping skills, and overall skill-set. his body control makes it almost impoossible for others' to draw a charge on him in those situations. plus he can also post-up, dribble in or just spot up for the open-shot.
now strictly based on jump-shot SHOOTING. he comes in at around a 40 percent clip in those situations and is second only to the great KOBE in such attempts! he has BOTH the mid-range game and the 3 point game unlike mr. kobe who only settles for the 3 due to his body type and lack of physical contact desire in those situations...
ginobili believe it or not is a close second! he has most of the same skillsets as pierce with the added deception of being a lefty. however, body type (and correct use of it) in addition other nuances still give the edge to pierce. Carmelo is third, kobe is FOURTH followed by wade!
i like KG and rondo and ray and others around the league but to me paul pierce is the one indispensable superstar. he does so much and brings so much to the table in terms of both the tangible and intangible! ultimately, the big games usually come down to putting the ball in the hoop in the last 5 seconds. paul does that better than ray, kg and others. you can rebound, shoot all the threes you want and play all the defense you want.. if at the end of the day or game, you do not score more points than the other team you do not win...period!
others are better than paul in blowouts in terms of stats and viability and in the big picture of stats but to me, he's the most diverse WINNER (outside of jordan) in the HISTORY of the game. he can contribute or dominate with or without the ball. you can put him on any team and his game transfers. put him on those 80's celtics and they are at least winning the same number of rings (with or without bird). same with the lakers. put him on kobe's lakers (minus kobe), and they have at least 5 RINGS by now!
give the man his due!
