"Red Sox by far, going from last to first is very tough."
Pats went from last to first also....
Some pundits pickes the Sox to make the playoffs this year, no pundits picked the Pats to do anything in 2001.
Sox had one of the highest payrolls in the league once again and signed a slew of new contracts, Pats were on the salary cap.
Sox had won a title with the same pitcher (Lester) and hitter (Ortiz) that excelled this time around, and two under that ownership group.
Pats were never going to win a title with Bledsoe, and had NEVER won a Super Bowl. The Rams were heavily favored in the Super Bowl, the Cards were not heavily favored over the Sox.
In the "Snow Bowl", it was clear that the Pats would lose aside from an obcure rule that no longer exists. Two of the most amazing field goals in the history of the league were made to avoid elimination.
The Red Sox were coming off a year with an incompetent manager who will never coach in the league again, it was logical to assume under Farrell the pitching staff in particular would be much better.
Look, the Sox were a surprise, and a happy one at that, and this year's Sox championship might be in the top five titles I have ever encountered, but the Pats in 2001 were a bigger surprise and at least a bigger turnaround, if not moreso.
