They must know something we don't right? I don't mind a punter here at all. Chargers fans will tell you what it's like to have a great punter, a difference-maker in every game.

It fills a need.  Guys like Dwyer and Dixon are a dime a dozen at this point.  There are plenty of power backs left to get in the last two rounds.  Mesko is the best punter by a mile.

They've done well with kicker and similar specialist picks in the past (Gostkowski, Ingram).  Punter has been inconsistent for us for a while.  Maybe this solves the problem.

    150 -- Patriots -- P Zoltan Mesko

There's special teams player teams player of the draft off the board. Looks like the Patriots got sick of inconsistent punting over the last decade, or so, and used a fifth-round pick on heavy-legged punter. I like the pick a lot. It will help the Patriots immensely.

You are absolutely right, they will need a heavy leg punter. And the reason why is they will most likely be 3 and out for most of the year. Yell

Yup & we don't pick again till the very end of the 6th round, so I wouldn't chance him being still available then when (as others have mentioned) is a position of need for us!

    Re: A punter?

    Zoltan Mesko
    Round 5, Pick 150
    Position: P
    Class: 5Sr
    School: Michigan
    Conference: Big Ten
    HT: 6-4.5
    WT: 240
    40 Time: 4.99
Biography: Four-year starter awarded All-American and All-Conference honors the past two seasons. Led the Big 10 last year, finishing with an average of 44.46 yards on 52 punts. Had 17 punts of 50 yards or better with a long of 66 yards. Junior numbers included a 43-yard average on 80 punts with a long of 63 yards.

Positives: Big, athletic punter who displays a strong leg. Possesses a fluid stroke kicking the ball, gets excellent hang time and can flip the field. Solid job kicking his team out of jams and gets hang time on punts, allowing coverage units to get down the field. Adequate skills as a directional punter. Large enough to get downfield and make the tackle if necessary.

Negatives: Very slow getting the ball off his foot. Overall punting lacks quickness. Looks terrible during Senior Bowl week.

Analysis: For the most part, Mesko has been effective and consistent throughout his college career. He offers the leg strength to play at the next level yet must find a way to hasten his delivery and get the ball off his foot quicker to have any chance of making a team.

    Projection: 6th

    Reiss metions----

"This the first time the Patriots have drafted a punter in Bill Belichick's regime, as the team has had veterans at the position -- Lee Johnson (2000), Ken Walter (2001-2003), Josh Miller (2004-2006) and Chris Hanson (2007-2009). "

Maybe Malone will be here longer than 2 or 3 years

    Re: A punter?

At this point in the draft, your picks are long shots to even make the team, never mind start. Your odds of getting a "starting" quality player though go way up when you're drafting the best kicker on the board.  Definitely a smart move at this point in the draft even if the ninnies at ESPN think it's a reach.
