Five kickoff returns for 209 yards (41.8 avg.), including a 95-yarder. Why cant we find KR's like that?

Wash still has his speed, experience and knowledge. Assuming health, it is no surprise he is performing. Wish it was here, but injuries put the team in a roster crunch. I was also intrigued in what he could do on draw plays, screens and pass pro.

Like Fells convo from yesterday...Wash is a vet who signed here, but was never really given a chance. I really never saw much of him after the preseason, but he seemingly rcvd the rookie status treatment, rather than the proven pro bowl vet he has been

Its the BB way, and in BB we trust

I was down on his tenure in New England and was leery why Seattle let him go after a good year there and he signed essentially a standard vet contract with the Pat, but he is proving me wrong. So why wasn't he used while he was a Pat? And why in the limited plays he was involved in here, he showed nothing?

Yeah I saw that. Oops. Could this be a case where the GM brought in 1 heck of a player but the coaches didn't utilize his talent and let him walk?

    Gasp.

I almost never say ... I told you so.

But .... I told you so. I was keel-hulled for saying NE should have kept Washington even if it meant cutting 4th RB Boldin or something like that.

The guy adds to a team.

    Ugh.

NE is going to need special teams contributions like that down the road given how depleted the other phases are right now.

It was clear that BB got a whiff of LW's ego. He realized that he didn't fit in with the "Patriot Way" and he needed to be cut loose. Of course, with both Ridley and Vereen being probowlers in waiting and Leon clammoring for more playing time, he had to go.  Bill does not tolerate egos and there is nobody better at sniffing them out.

sometimes I think BB signs guys just to keep him from other teams. He probably thought he was going back to the jets and wanted to scoop him up quick. His lack of touches in the offense when vareen was out was puzzling and I never believed he was out for months with a thigh injury. More likely he wasnt involved just in case he gets released and goes to jets, he doesnt know much of our offense. IDk....Head scratcher. He had two minor injuries(thigh, ankle) that I never even saw occur and was held out of most games....  I always thought he was a leader and a great asset to a team...Puzzling

This thread could be an overreaction ...  KIck returns open up sometimes and there is a hole.  Most itmes not.    LW probly got a couple great blocks and a few holds and he popped one.  So what...?  could have been anyone.  Bigger issue was the drop he had when he was here.

2nd bigger issue is who cares about guys who have moved on?  how about a welker, woodhead ,Washington thread...?

Maybe BB just cuts guys alphabetically...  hey Zoltans gone too..!

wait a minute, you mean he actually was targeted in the offense while here?? I sure cant remember. Must have been early.  Either way its no biggie like you said. Boyce will get better each week and our special teams overall have been great so more of a head scratcher than a complaint.

Re: Any of you catch Leon Washingtons KR stats last week?

    A couple of thoughts:

    1. It is too bad they did not get value out of him. He WAS here and we let him go... BUT:

    2. The blocking on KO returns has been average to awful for a few years at least. Even in open preseason practices you can see the special teams coach doing a pretty mindless job on kick off returns. So I am not sure that other than a single breakout play during the year that anyone would fare very well with the blocking they have given.

In fact, v Cleveland one of the better blocks on a KO return came from VEREEN !!!!!!!! That is telling.

    3. (and perhaps the most telling reason they let him go) With a VERY high percentage of KOs not being returned it has reduced the overall value of KO returners just due to significantly reduced touches. So when you have a player who is not going to add value on O or D and will not add value on other specialist teams... if ALL HE CAN DO is return KOs, then he is not so likely to make the Pats roster. It is just the math of how much he can impact. And again, with the poor blocking we deliver that would limit anyone, including Washington, even more.

So in the end, while I would LOVE to have a top 5 KO Return team, I wont complain about this. ANd with all the injuries it illustrates the need for a 53 man roster where all 53 can contribute beyond the most limited role of all. Still, I get and share the desire for a really good KO returner.

Re: Any of you catch Leon Washingtons KR stats last week?

I add one further thought to my previous post above... a  somewhat limited observation: the worse a team's offense the more good specialist teams, including and especially return teams, matter. If you have an especially good offense it still matters but incrementally less. This is not a major factor but it is a LITTLE mitigating in the scheme of things.

Denver gives up the 11th most yards on KO returns.

KC the previous week had a guy return two for a 65 yd avg, including 108 yard TD.

Not sure it is all Leon Washington.

The Titans play Jacksonville in a couple weeks who is one of the better KO coverage units. I'll be interested to see how he does in that game.

The Titans are around the top 10 in KO returns as a team and Leon Washington just got their so they were doing pretty well on their own merit.

regardless, he is still better than Blount and Slater. I am anxious to see what Boyce can do, but all things considered, I prefer the vet back there in the playoffs over the rookie..
