A great defense will always beat a great offense.

    Just ask the Colts 2000-2005, 2007, 2008
    Chargers 2004-2009
    Patriots 2007-2009

the problem with your analysis is that in 2007, the Giants D was ranked 17th where the Pats D was ranked 4th.  2008 Pats never made it to the playoffs and didn't have a great O.  2009 Pats D was ranked 5th where Baltimore was ranked 3rd by a very small margin.

The Jets ARE the 01 Pats in so many ways, QBs were young and inexperienced, hard nose offense and defense always winning in the trenches.

Did you ever think that the 07 team was the beginning of the end.  Their whole philosophy has changed.  And maybe that is why the players they are drafting are
not playing well any more.  Maybe it is our coaching from BB on down that is screwing things up.  The players maybe good, but they maybe are no longer
taught to be hard nosed hitters, too much finesse on both sides of the ball.
Actually no, the 01 Pats D was ranked something like 21st and the RB was not that great......Where the Jets D is ranked #1 and their Running game is also ranked #1.

The only comparison that can be made is that they both have inexperienced QB leading the team with a relatively new HC.

Re: Are the Jets the worst team to ever make the AFC Championship?

m1021us   Sorry my friend, you can take those stats and shove em in the trash.  All you have is a stat that says the Pats in 01 was worse than this years D?  No way!  WE kicked peoples butts all over the place, and this team was good, but not clutch.  In 01 we were always making the big plays to win the game or prevent a score.  WE bent but did not break.  BB would agree with me 100% and as he and the Late Red head would say:  " Statistics are for losers"   There running back was great back then simply because we didn't give up on the run.  Our O and D were huge in the trenches never letting up for 4 quarters where this team starting in 07 were panzys in every way.  All finesse and you don't go far that way.  07 was the beginning of the end for the Pats.  I called it in game 2 at home with the Bills.  I knew we were being just liket the Colts and Peyton, never able to score in playoffs.  The Colts 8 losses in the playoffs avg  about 13 points a game and our beloved most overated offense ever scored 14 points in 07 and 2 weeks ago.

And one more thing.  Cassell's team in 08 was vastly better than both Brady's 07 and 09 teams down the stretch when it counts.  We were running and
passing in 10th gear the last few games on all cylinders.  You really need to get your facts straight.  It is not about the stats but how is the team doing.  Our SB winning teams could beat you by 3 and beat the crap out of you and there was never ever a question who was the better team.  The 07 team after midseason looked like crap the whole 2nd half of the season, getting the crap beat out of them all the time.  They won, but they lost most games physically and mentally in the trenches, and you don't win SBs playing all finesse up front.

Oh, one more thing.  How can you say the Pats were # 4 and the Giants # 17 on defense?  Ridiculous!  They were kicking people butts up and down the field down the stretch and in the playoffs.  Once again Stats are for losers.  They were great on defense, unbelievable!   And our great offense was a way below average offense in the SB no matter how many points, Brady TD passes, or RAndy's TD receptions.  They mean absolutely nothing, because when we needed them, the D had to play way over their heads to keep us in that SB, the offense, the best ever (HA!) was as poor as I have ever seen, and all you fans like Colt fans blamed the D?  The D played so wonderfully with spirit and feelings and emotions, while our offense felt like we won before we stepped on the field.  Like Strachan asked his D line after the first few sets of downs if our Oline was actually even trying to block them.  So many of you fans were so insulted, but the fact was it did seem like that the whole game.  Even our go ahead TD late in the 4th was Brady just stepping up.  He was surrounded by GIants all game.  Then all of you blamed the Defense.  Sometimes you have to look objectively.

Many pundits said Belichick did the best coaching job in the history of the league when he led the Pats to the Superbowl in 2001. He did not have a lot of talent but what he had were players who played hard, unlike this year. Also that was  the year Bill told Terry Glenn to hit the road. This years Jets have talent on the squad.
They are getting hot at the right time beating the Bengals twice and the Bolts.

"Great Defense will ALWAYS beat great offense" hmmm.  Well at least that takes care of half of the game anyway, right?

I am a firm believer of the "defense wins championships" mantra, but you have to define what a great defense is.

Yes the colts lost to some Great Pats defenses and lost to a great Steelers defense, but in 07 and 08, I would not define SD's D as great and the colts offense had success against them both years.

Ironically, however, you left out the Great Ravens Defense which has not beaten the colts the last 8 times they've played and not in 2 playoff games, one in Baltimore with Rex Ryan as the DC (06).

The point is even with a great defense, there better be something on the other side of the ball, because a great defense can lose 6-3 and not have given up a touchdown.

What about that San Diego team with Neil O'Donnel and Natron Means. They were pretty prutrid.

Re: Are the Jets the worst team to ever make the AFC Championship?

Underdog, The Colt/Ravens best D beats a great Offense everytime rings true in general, and the example you use works the other way around.  The reason the
Colts alway win is their defense has been excellent, among the best in football, so
the Colts win because they have a great defense and offense as opposed to
the Ravens great D and no offense most of the time.

I will say the best example is you show me where the best offense in the league with
no defense ever wins a championship, and You will find championships won by great
defenses who have no offense; example the Ravens SB win.   Everyone knew the Suns would never win with a great offense and no defense, but you wlll see championships won by teams with all D and no Offense.  It has happened more than enough, so teams built that way know it can be done, and the great offenses
with no defense get sucked into the illusion can win with no defense; example was the 07 Pats.  If it wasn't for the defense the whole second half of the season and playoffs, they wouldn't have won anything.  Great offenses make teams lazy like they are unstoppable, and the Pats D that year got lulled to sleep in these run up the score routine, and the D being a veteran D had the will to wake up when the offense fell asleep the second half of the year, and carried the offense, except in the SB, way to many fans here blame for the loss.  It was the offense that was our strength, not the D.  We were the greates team of all time because of our offense, not our D.  We didn't need a good D to win.  Talk shows all saying this and going 19-0.  It was a sham.  That offense was like the Colts in the playoffs.  When they lose it is always the offense, not the defense, and even in the SB years everyone blamed the defense for Colt losses to Pats in the playoffs.  We beat them 20-3 or so, and after, all they say is we need to build the D.

Quasi - you are not wrong, and you do not the instance where a great d with a mediocre O has won.  But in the last 20-30 years, that may be the only time it has happened.
