    Brandon Spikes MIA

If anyone followed Bandon Spikes on twitter, you know that he used to tweet a bunch, but it has been a long while since a Brondon Spikes tweet as been sent out.

It's also been mentioned that Bandon Spikes has been missing in Foxboro too.

It will be interesting to see if Spikes shows up this week.  Anyone have any news? Concerns?

The guy will be gone after the season..there's no way we are going to pay a guy who has his own porn video 35 million to be a two down linebacker. None.

There is always the franchise tag for 1 year... but then after that Collins and Cunningham should be studs on the outside with Mayo a reliable all-pro on the interior

I don't have a lot of hope for Cunningham.  Maybe for Collins and jones.

Hightower and Mayo in the middle with Collins and Ninkovich on the outside.  Wilfolk, Kelly and Amastad up front.  Spikes will not make the starting lineup.

    +1

a 3 man rotation of Collins, jones, nink on the outside, and Hightower, mayo in the middle. Collins may maybe bouncing around between outside and middle..maybe Hightower as well and also as de on a 4 man line...lots of options even without spikes.  I don't think spikes will be resigned unless its on a team friendly deal.

is he sitting out Because of a trade?

    Re: Brandon Spikes MIA

Honestly, I thought Spikes was possible trade bait during the draft (more so than Mallet, actually).  His contract is ending after this season and he seems rather one-dimensional, a good run defender but not much in coverage.

With BB drafting two more versatile LBs (Collins and Beauharnais) and Mayo and Hightower both being more MLBs than OLBs, it seems like Spikes is even more expendable.

However, a lot depends on what BB decides to do with the front seven overall.  I'm still not sure where they're headed and suspect BB won't fully decide either until he sees what guys do in training camp.

Spikes is a good run defender and hard hitter who helps keep the middle of the field stout against power runs, so if BB wants a powerful MLB, Spikes may stay.  If he's trying to get more versatile there and improve the LB pass coverage skills, then Spikes either goes or plays in a reduced role.

We'll see, but I tend to think Spikes won't be here next season and may even be gone this season if a deal is out there for him.

    Re: Brandon Spikes MIA

I cannot see him back next year if the cost is too high.  He is a 2 down linebacker and even though he is a great run stuffer he is a liability in coverage.  He is also a bit of a wildcard with his words and actions.  I cannot believe  the Krafts will pay Spikes a lot of money and "hope for the best", even though it's clear he is a tone setter on that D.

Yeah my bad, I typed Cunningham as I thought of Hightower, weird

You guys are right about Spikes being a two-down LB and a one-dimensional run defender, but man can he hammer people!  I can think of a couple of games that he changed in our favor last year with huge hits that forced fumbles.  He is also an emotional leader for our defense and brings a swagger and attitude that we have lacked for a while.  I think that he is a more important player for us than many are giving him credit for.  I hope we can resign him to a new deal.

    Re: Brandon Spikes MIA

Unless Spikes wants a massive contract I think they will keep him around. Lets face it BB loves to have 4 LB's that he can play with at all times. Mayo and Spikes are really the only two LBs you can say are purely LBs. Both Collins and Hightower can play 43 DE's, OLB's in either a 43 or 34, or ILBs. So that's your 4 moving forward. Really if you think about it who's behind those 4 right now? Fletcher, Tarp, White, Beauharnais, Vega? If BB wants to run 4 LBs as he did during the SB years then Spikes becomes part of that critical core and lets face it, he's the best run stopping LB they have.

BTW, for those convinced we are moving to mainly a 34 I ask why are you convinced? The only guys with enough size on the DL who have at least 1 year under their belt are Wilfork and Kelley. Kelley was a liability in run defense so you are already shooting yourself in the foot in a 2 gap system there and you have no clue how any of the rooks will play in that system. It's premature to assume we are moving to a 34 when you also add in the fact that they just added speed rushing 43 DE's in Vega, Buchanan and Collins this offseason. If anything, because of the moves I see them keeping a 43 and running a smaller/quicker 3rd down rush package. Spikes on 3rd down can be sub'd out with either Hightower, Collins, or Fletcher and Nink sub'd out with Buchanan, Collins, Vega, Hightower. Any of which always multi flexibility options with the entire left side playing Dr. Mario right before the snap swithcing from DE to ILB to OLB confusing the OL.

Wow, guys are ready to get rid of Spikes in favor of Collins who hasnt even played an NFL down yet?  Wow, talk about flava of the month

Lets let BB decide. I happen to think he is the hardest hitting LB on the team that makes our defense tougher. Outside of Football, I dont really care what he does, and neither should fans, unless its illegal behavior. Tweeting!?!?!   C'mon Man

Get rid of Mayo and his high priced salary. What did he do last year in postseason??? Get run over by Rice on the goal line??

I can see Spikes being on the Pats this season and perhaps going forward providing we don't see much of his off-the-reservation off-field behavior.  He does bring an element of toughness to the D despite his limitations in coverage.  That said, who knows where BB is taking this team defensively?

Spikes brings attitude and toughness to this defense.  While he certainly isn't a fast LB or much of a cover line backer he lights up the RB's and brings the pain.  I like Spikes, I like what he brings to this team.  Hopefully he has been working on his speed instead of spending time on twitter.  Not really sure why the bad attitudes towards Spikes here!

If the guy isn't out breaking the law, I don't really care what he does on his own time. He's the hardest hitter on the team, and that energy is something this defense needs more of. I hope he stays.

Spikes plays the run.  Collins plays the pass.  BB normally rotates his defensive linemen to keep them fresh.  Why not linebackers?

I wasn't judging the guy.  I really don't care what he does either, but apparently BB and Robert Kraft do.  I would like to see him stay for all of the reasons given in this thread for keeping him.
