I also asked Monday what the injury was. Talib was clearly jogging in place, jumping up and down and trying to stay loose on the sideline. I understand he was testing his body, but he looked like he was going to at least try.
I think it is really hard to look at players on other teams and speculate how they will do here. Heck, even BB misses 50% of the time, even more so with CB's. However, I do think BB has found a CB in Talib that plays exactly the way BB wants him to, is still relatively young, and the team and the player have a strong interest in staying together. The one down side and potential deal killer is that the Pats wont get Talib on the cheap. They are going to have to pay him fair market value. They should do it. 3/$21. $12 guaranteed.
Talib, Dennerd, Ryan and Arrington are a very good unit, deep, versatile and can play the way BB wants them to. With out Talib, plug in any draft choice or other free agent, and IMO this back field is weaker.
Way to mcuh for Talib. Unless it's a 1-2 year deal for 5mil or less per year and less than half gauranteed including bonuses I wouldn't touch him. He might be perfect for what BB wants to do but again what good is that if he's taking up a spot on the roster, is only good half the season, and you can't count on him to be there in the playoffs? That means you'd better spend big on his replacement because nether Ryan nor Dennard have the physical ability to cover guys Talib can.
Imo if you are going to invest that type of money then you have to ask would you take DRC. Similar type of player, not as much talent but much more durable with similar (non-injury) red flags as Talib or maybe take someone with just as much talent and similar injury red flags (though he's at least finished seasons and plays hurt) in Grimes. Those 3 guys imp will receiver similar types of deals this offseason and frankly I'd might want either over Talib because I'm not sure how many years Talib will actually play with all these nagging lower body injures and the inability to play through them.
Talib played in 13 games this season, not 8. The style of play BB wants from a CB is tough physically on a CB. DRC has not played the style CB that the Pats want. Can he? Maybe. Why take that chance?
The Pats did use ample resources on depth behind Talib. They used a high draft choice on Ryan, and they gave Arrington a lot of money. The defense the PAts wish to play...which is game plan and each week take away the oppositions strength, fits perfectly with what Talib can do. He can cover Jimmy Graham, Steve Smith and D Thomas. Not a lot of CB's, including DRC can do that
