Coaching Concerns --- BB needs help!!!!

If the coaches are young/new and the players are young/new...who is developing whom???

Can help to think that a Crennel (caliber coach) would have done better with these guys.

Besides Chung, can anyone point to any draft pick/young player who has improved beyond the potential flashed in his rookie year?

Seems that almost all of the young players have either stagnated or regressed a bit. Esepcially on defense.

-Mayo (appeared to regress last yr ..could be back on track today)
    -Pryor (flatline)
    -Brace (???)
    -Meriweather (probowl to benched)
-Butler (shutdown corner flashes last last to benched for poor play)
-Wilhite (appears close but cant put it together)
    -Chung (shows signs)
    -Crable (injuries)
-Guyton (bigger and faster than Mayo but get pushed around , why can he get stronger??)

This team needs experienced coaches to develop this young potential. If I'm Kraft I'm pushing Bill on this!!!

Lets look at the (experience)mismatch this week....
OC:  O'Brien vs Dan Henning ( former NFL HC w/ gazzilion yrs in the league)
DC:  Patricia vs Mike Nolan (former NFL HC w/ gazzilion yrs in the league)

Lets face it, the type of issues that this team is experiencing is exactly what happens when someone (BB) is spread too thin.

    How about this guy

Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham brought with him the 3-4 defense he used in the NFL..........

Worked under Wade Phillips who runs a Bum/Phillips 3-4 1 Gap penetrating defense
And Under Romeo Crennel who has run a 2/gap and a 1/gap 3-4.

I think he would be a great LB's coach for us if Patricia gets dubbed the DC

Also, it would be nice if we could grab a QB coach, plus a couple of free lancing specialist for both side of the ball.

How is BB spreading hisself to thin? He isnt physically doing everything by himself he has the help its just putting it all together and making it work consistently. If this team was operating on all cylinders on D and O we wudnt have this thread wud we?

he's needed help for a while. Either attrition gets us...or some of the few who we've hired on didn't help. Either way, it ends up that we've been shy on the coaching staff for a while. It's not like the salaries that go towards coaching count towards the salary cap - so, why not steal some proven coaches elsewhere?

Sounds good to me. I'm all for anyone with the expertize to "coach up" these young guys and start tapping into their potential.

The Pats have been picked clean over the years which shows the success the team has enjoyed.  Nobody picks up coaches from losing teams.  The Pats build their coaching staff from within.  It is what it is so don't expect any "help".

Is BB spread too thin?  Who knows.  It's all speculation as we do not have any idea really what goes on behind the closed doors of the Pats.  From what I've read he's not.  It's just that everything gets a check over by BB and that's about it.

I don't spend a lot of time worrying about this, but I think the Pats have the same number of coaches they've always had, it's just that responsibilities are delegated a little differently than on most other teams and there are no designated "coordinators." The notion that Belichick is miring himself in the excruciating minutiae of every last detail is . . .

Well, let's just say I think it's not accurate and leave it at that.

I'm going to help a few of you out and explain why this is a trollish post. It's not a trollish post to ask questions about our coaching staff given all the transitions. It IS a trollish post to put this up now early in a new season GIVEN THERE WILL BE NO COACHING CHANGES ON THE TEAM TILL THE OFFSEASON. Anyone who thinks that a good defensive or offensive coordinator is available now, and if they think that person could now come to our team and quickly adjust to our approach - that's simply ignorant of how football works. You need an offseason to integrate people effectively. I personally would have been happier with a solid defensive coach with a track record in to help on that side of the ball developing young players, but that was an offseason issue. Now it's about how we match up against Miami. This kind of stuff comes off like whining now.

Re: Coaching Concerns --- BB needs help!!!!

BostonTrollSpanker--you're right that there's little we can do now if BB is spread too thin, but I don't think the post is trollish. I think BB is a brilliant coach--and even when I sometimes have doubts about his approach (to drafting for instance), he tends to prove me wrong down the road.  But the one thing that I do think is odd about BB is that he hasn't more aggressively tried to bring in experienced, senior level coaching support. BB's had a history of taking on too much (Cleveland) and also maybe trying to control too much.  This can be a fatal flaw in any leader.  Good leaders understand that success comes from bringing people as smart or even smarter than you onto your leadership team and then empowering them to do what they do well themselves without too much micromanaging of the details on your part.  You want to hire smart people who can give you ideas that you may not have thought about yourself, who will push back when they think what you're doing won't work, and who can complement your skills and compensate for your own weaknesses (because no one is perfect).  If BB doesn't have a team like that, he's missing something important.  I think the question whether BB is ignoring the need for empowered, experienced, senior support for himself is a very legitimate one.  And I don't see any problem with asking it any time.
