    Posted by Schumpeters-Ghost

3 of those 7th rounders are compensation picks......Juliam Edelman was a 7th rounder last year. Ah pretty sure he is gonna be a big part of the O next year. Didn't you jump out of your skin when they dealt that 89 pick to Car? That was a fantastic move. Already 2 #1's & 2 #2's next year. BB made 3 picks appear out of thin air this year. That is genius. I'm pretty sure he got the guys he wanted too....I would have loved to have seen Gerhart but Legarrett Blount wud be nice too. We need a bruiser in the backfield...

I object to your well thought out, reasoned analysis.  Just look at what Kiper and Mcshay like, pick a guy you like based off their analysis and then defend that pick till you die as the greatest player ever, and a future hall of famer.

    To ALL:

Alright...I'm officially DISAPPOINTED with Belichick's last 2 Draft Selections

Taylor Price-UNbelievable pure athleticism and speed.  A Wideout with Raw athleticism and great potential for Yards After the Catch Weighed Against-putting this guy in an extremely complicated offense and under a QB that COMPLETELY thrives on being on the same page in precise timing of routes and reading defenses, MAKES this selection extremely poor imho.

BETTER CHOICE: Using one of your gazillion 6th or 7th rders and moving up to get Minnesotta wideout Eric Decker, selected just a couple of picks just prior...he!! even Damian Williams was a 3rd Round Selection, so NE could have used 2 of those late round picks and came away with the best Possession wideout in the entire 2010 Draft.  BOTH Decker and Williams have absolutely sure-hands, UNreal route-running, Big #2 wideout size, and even though Decker gives way in speed, Williams doesn't at all...

Aaron Hernandez- 10 X worse pick than even price.  So alright, NE already secured an excellent TightEnd in Rob Gronkowski...  WhyInTH take ANOTHER TE?  IF there was a concern about Gronkowski's back and you STILL wanted to do a security-blanket move in getting another TE, GRAB Dennis Pitta, a bigger and better blocking TE that did far more as a pass-catcher with far more limited offensive resources at his disposal at BYU than Hernandez had at Florida?  And dear god, WITH coverage safeties the norm in today's NFL, Drafting 2 TEs in 4 rounds IS an UTTER WASTE!  So the TE position has been been greatly countered in todays NFL with dual-coverage safeties, AND since NE uses them sparringly even WITH that, AND since NE-when they DO use a TE, they use their blocking abilities to a far greater extent...THEN=Yup, Gotta Draft another TE...and a massively undersized pass-catching TE at that!

BETTER CHOICE:  With Anthony Dixon at RB on the board still...who's almost 6'1 235lb size and bullish between-the-tackles North-South running style Weighed Against the fact that with NE's smaller zone-blocking O-Line, Bigger RBs do far better in The Patriots current system, AND weighed against Sammy Morris's and Fred Taylor's age and injury history...Grabbing Dixon, or heck-even taking Jonathen Dwyer (who's got big enough bulk but operated in a goffy Ga Tech Offense) OR grabbing Legarette Blount (who has some potential-for-concern off-field issues, but WHO just killed in the Senior Bowl...trouncing over and through mass defenders)...ANY 1 of these 3 choices woulda been far, far wiser AND better AND needed more AND a better fit...U-G-L-Y.

The truth is NO one will know how this draft works out until next year. I see maybe 2 drafted players that may work out but dont care for the rest. THe question remains, did the Patriots pick up anyone that can get to the quaterback and the answer is most likely no. Did they get a running back that could be a work horse? most likely no. They picked up a TE that hasnt played in over a year and had serious back surgery, no one will know how he will do or if he will be able to play in the NFL and not be affected by that injury.
The draft prospects last year were rated higher than what they go tthis year and they havent worked out all that good, so let the name calling begin if you wish but my projection from all this is the Patriots will finish either 2nd or 3rd this year.

Fairweather fans and ill-informed peons alike : I have largely DESPISED Each and Every of Bill Belichick's last 5 (at least) Draft Classes... YET, Thus far in 2 (yes 2) Total Rounds, The New England have acquired Players whom I consider The Best CB (#2 as worst case), Tied for The Best TE (#2 at worst case once more), The Second Best ILB, and an OLB pass-rushing specialist in the physical mold of Willie McGinest.  4 Players in just over 60 TOTAL Selections by ALL teams.  ALL ferocious competitors who have decent-excellent physical skill-sets as well...  So I'm now taking note (beware)... IF I hear ANY of you Know-Nothings complaining when New England begins its next Dynastic Run at MULTIPLE Championships, after a year or two tops of these players coming to full fruition and great promise, IT Is THEN That I WILL drop the hammer on you pathetic excuses for Pats Fans ...  The only minor difference at all, is that because this is over the internet, it'll be just a proverbial hammer of words in a strong but rather decent and somewhat light-hearted tone.  And the other small difference is that my Bengal Cat hides all of my pens and carries them away to some hidden stash of hers, so I really can't take note on a list of names.  Also, 1 more thing...I forget pretty easily, so lest I fail to recall, just remind me somewhere in the distant future of your meekness.  Oh, and I might not even care at that time anyways (ya never know), so again- I might just then ask you to say something derisive towards yourself in private...        BUT LIKE I Said People, There WILL be certain, if not harsh or deliberate or even real- REPERCUSSIONS ...then there at least will be this dead-set promise of imaginary repercussions which will no doubt weigh heavily on your soul...

    Too funny, Laz.

Reminds me of a joke - Sure, the wages of sin are death, but after taxes it is really only a mild headache.

Just to be sure though, a few years from now, I will (maybe) be watching my back just in case I somehow get added to the forgotten list or remembered as being on the list when I wasn't or something.

The first time someone throws a TD over Mccourtney this board will be full of "I told you so's."  Obviously there is not a CB in the league who can stop every pass, and never allows a TD, but the experts will come out.  Also I predict that by the first game every single pick will be proclaimed a "bust" by some expert fans.  If one of these guys doesn't start next year they will be busts to some.  If one of these guys is a bust (which is entirely possible because the draft is not an exact science) then the sky will fall and the Pats will never win again and some will want BB's head on a platter.  If a player chosen by another team becomes a star then the expert fans will say they wanted him and they knew he was the next big thing regardless of whether he could play in the Pats system or he wasa available when the Pats picked.

By the first game? You give this board way too much credit. I haven't read each post, but I bet you could already find for each draftee declaring them a bust.

The only pick that I really like is Brandon Spikes.  The rest of the picks are nothing to get excited about.  The TE looks promising, but the injuries bother me.

Seems like most posters here are just happy with the Pats selecting a player.  Heck, they could have taken someone's grandmother from shaddy hills nurising home and they would have been calling it an awesome pick.

I don't know if it has been the players that are the problem in New England...Yes it looks like a pretty good draft? Still no major pass rusher?

But the scheme we run in New England may be the problem???

If we would go after the QB more we might just see we have always had the players?

    Guys,

It seemed to me that going into this draft our needs were (in terms of priority)..

    OLB
    TE
    DL
    WR
    RB
    OL
    Punter

What have we picked so far?
    CB
    TE
    OLB
    ILB
    WR
    TE
    Punter
Does not get me super excited about this draft so far..I do know that you cannot comment on a player until the 3rd year, but we have HOLES and someone to fill them !!!

Laz,     As frightening as your "hammer of words" may be, I will have to respectfully disagree. This Devin kid may be OK, but let's agree that the biggest concern for this team was LB. Now, Spikes & Cunningham might be good picks and I think Gronkowski was a solid pick (only concern is durability), you had, who I've watched on TV, a MAMMOTH pass-rusher in Jerry Hughes of TCU. I mean, this guy is a FREAK! We had a chance to take him and we passed for a CB! You know, when we were winning championships and taking a guy like Logan Mankins, who no one heard of before, looked genius. However, this is NOT the same team. This is a team who just got BLOWN OUT at home in the playoffs and have had AWFUL drafts - outside of Meriwether and Mayo (although 09 picks are still TBD) the last few years.      What does it say when you have drafted for secondary help in the last couple yrs and you AGAIN have to draft a CB? The problem is that BB thinks he can go aganist logic and draft the "best player available". You can do that when you don't have any glaring needs, Bill, but this team has MANY needs. Not to mention the fact that there has been TWO moves this offseason and both have been two aging players on the back 9 of their careers.        While I appreciate your passion and admire your enthusiasm, this team is trending DOWN. There is no denying that. You can try if you'd like, but you'd just be naive. As much as I hate to say it, the Jets and Dolphins have made better moves and ARE better teams - and that's just in our division.        I hope that these guys work out, but given the moves (and non-moves) that we have made over the course of the past year, it's looking bleak, man. Maybe going 7-9 this year will wake people up to this fact..We're NOT an elite team any longer. Unfortunately, we're going to have to start getting used to that.       It used to be "In Bill We Trust". Well, to me, it's now more like "In Trusting Bill, I Fear"....
    Posted by PatsWagon21

I tend to agree with you.  Thus far, I don't know if the draft picks have sufficiently address our greatest weakness (pass rush).  Certainly, picking a DE/OLB (Cunningham) and ILB (Spikes) helps, but a CB, TE, and WR doesn't.

It was hard to see the patriots pass on some of the "impact" players left on the board (i.e., Dez Bryant, Jerry Hughes, Sergio Kindle..).

What I am talking about is people mindlessly blathering about how BB is a genius becuase he has 13 picks.  I am pointing out that 5 of the 13 are low value 7th ROUND PICKS.

    That is not genius.

I am also pointing out that BB has traded down twice and picked a punter in the 5th round - and he has NO RUSHING ATTACK and NO PASS RUSHERS on a team that finished as a complete mediocrity last season.

If this is such a deep draft - why waste a 5 of a PUNTER?
