    free agents

I took a look at the Patriot free agents.  The roster looks good.  Talib, Edelman and Wendell are the major contracts ending.  It would be nice to resign Talib as he has solidified the secondary but do not see wendell and edelman returning.

    Re: free agents

Edelman is the one I'd want to bring back. Talib only if the contract is right. Since the hip injury (which has plagued him in the past) he's been average at best to the point where BB put Arrington and Cole on Wallace? Combine that with his inability to stay on the field I wouldn't offer a ton and I don't think he'll get one either. I'm sorry but 5-6 games a year at top 3 CB caliber and the rest sub top 15 isn't enough to warrent a big contract. You need to do that game in and game out. Wendell will come cheap and we'll have so many holes to fill via the draft on both lines I'd bring him back for cheap and see if he can improve.

Imo the draft they need to focus on getting a starting caliber DT, a run stopping back up DT in the later rounds (Jones is pass rushing specialist), a starting caliber G (preferable one that can start at RG and move to LG once Mankins is done), a backup swing T in the mid rounds, and an earlier round TE. That should be a start. A better 3rd down RB to backup Vereen, another vet WR, another vet CB (if Talib isn't resigned), and a SS are also on the list. That's a lot of holes to fill.

I can easily see Edelman being re-signed for the right price.  Talib might be another story as top CB are in high demand.

Right now, the cap hell pats have 120 committed for next year.  Need a new NT, Wilfork is done. Need two new TEs, someone to play the 8 games Amendola will miss.  Yep, cap hell.  Is it back to the well named Tom Brady?

no way is Vince done. He will be in a contract year and will come back as good as ever. Dont forget some of those big guys (Ted Washington) seem to play forever. We do need another NT to groom behind Vince and TK who will be back.

I think Spike's knees are done.  Seems to have knee problems every year.  If he is done, we will need an ILB.  VW and Mankins may need to take pay cuts or be released.  They are big hits on the cap.  OLB should be covered with Mayo, Collins and Hightower, unless hightower is moved inside.  This may be a better position for him as his cover capabilites are limited.  OL needs youth.  DT could use a draft pick to groom.  Safety should be covered if Harmon develops in his second year.  CB will have Dennard and Ryan on the outside.  I would prefer to keep Talib but think the price may be too high.

So, here's the decision.  Keep old fat Vince recovering from a blown achilles at 10 mil or cut him at say 3 or 4 mil and move on.  Hmmmm, what would BB do?

Edelman is deserved to have a new contract.  He is depenable and the go to guy now for Tom Brady.  From the beginning of the season, He has done a nice job in the absent of Gronks and Amendola.  He will become a star like Wes Welker.

8 mil a year.  He won't make the same mistake Welker did by giving the Pats a discount.  He's already played a few years at very cheap money.  Edelman is a good slot guy and a good punt returner.

I think there are several people that are going to have to be asked to take a pay cut...Mankins, Amendola, Wilfork, Mayo, Gronk and Arrington. If any of those guys refuse, I'd take a long look at their salary cap hit and make a decision on their future here. Gronk will be protected by his injury, so you can't cut him, but Arrington you can. Mankins I'd just flat out cut anyway...no negotiating...bye bye. I'd tell Amendola he needs to make 4 million a season instead of 7, if he doesn't want to do that...bye bye. I'd tell Vince, we love you man, but we can't pay you 10 million a year. I'd tell Mayo, hey Jerod we stink with or without you, you make little difference in that equation, you want to stay? Well we can't keep paying you like you're a difference maker because you aren't...I'm not saying you are as bad as Hightower, but you're nothing close to Patrick Willis and we're paying you to be Patrick Willis. As for Arrington I'd tell him, hey I can walk up into the stands and find someone better than you, in fact the guy selling cotton candy over there can do better playing on the outside...I can't believe I paid you 4 million a year to run in a straight line for ten yards before falling on your face. Give me what I paid you last year or I'm going to have Dennard punch you in the face.

I figure we can save 10 million by doing all of this, that should be plenty of money for Bill to spend on other guys that can't play.

Wendell is a very good guy as a backup. He's doing the best he can but he simply lakes the size to take on the 300 lb + D linemen.

Edelman would be a priority sign in my book, only getting better, stayed healhy finally and returns punts better than just about anyone in the NFL.

Talib if the money is right.

Wendell - he won't be asking for a lot, but Kline can probably do what he does for less.

Spikes will probably will ask for more than he's worth, bottom line is they drafted Hightower to play that strongside/Ted position that Spikes plays, and he can probably do it better and for less.  Don't get me wrong I love Spikes nasty attitude but only at a good price.

Agree with all above who say we need a boost at DT, not because Vince is done, but because Vince needs serious help around him.  Assuming Armstead is finally healthy next season to play end, Kelly possibly returns at a good price on the other end then getting Vince's replacement for the future would provide us depth and insurance.

I would love to see some more true 3/4 next season, I know I say it every year but with Jones getting a lot of reps on two feet, next year might be the time to get bigger upfront.  We'll still run the four man front, but hopefully in more nickel situations and against fast break teams.  On the flipside if Buchanon can put on some pounds we could run a pretty nasty 4/3 with Hightower in the middle and Mayo and Collins outside.

I guess in part it is frustration, but it's also frustration of having a lowly ranked defense 5 years running. That is a fact.

I might not cut Mayo, but I sure the hell would Mankins. I have no interest in paying a guard what we pay him - no way - we can find someone else cheaper that can't handle a speed rush up the middle. This guy has had some terrible games over the last three years, certainly far too many for a guy getting paid what he is. His money could be used better elsewhere. It's my opinion, I know that, but do you think all the players I listed in my original post will be here next year? Be honest.

Cutting Mankins would be stupid imo.  He gets way too much criticism here.  He and Solder are basically on an island every play because of the injury to Vollmer and struggles of Connolly and Wendell.  He still makes a lot of really positive plays.  The fact that we'd only save about 2.5 million against the cap by cutting him makes it more obvious.  If you think we're going to find a better guard than Mankins at that salary I think you're crazy.  The guy made another pro bowl last year.  Sure reputation helps there, but he was also named 2nd team all pro and ranked as a top 100 player according to his peers coming into the season.  He isn't some JAG.

As for the guys you listed the only one who might not be here next year is Vince.  The rest there isn't enough of a salary cap gain to justify cutting them.  Cutting Vince would save us 8 million against the cap next year.  Unless he agrees to restructure on team friendly terms I would cut him considering the injury he is coming off of (as much as it pains me to say it).
