Notre Dame Statement: Manti Te'o
On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te'o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

This statement is beyond belief.
Either Dennis Brown is The World's Most Ignorant Man...or he thinks all of us are.
Here's their subsequent statement:
On January 16, Notre Dame determined that Assistant Vice President Dennis Brown, linebacker Manti Te'o and others were involved in a sordid and complex conspiracy involving the feigned death of a fictitious woman named Lennay Kekua. Mr. Brown, Mr. Te'o and their co-conspirators apparently lead the University and the football world to believe that the fictitious Ms. Kekua had tragically died of leukemia when in fact, Ms. Kekua never actually existed. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax, and entrusted Dennis Brown to lead that investigation, having no basis for believing that Mr. Brown might have been involved in any way. However, when Mr. Brown issued his statement on the matter, others at the University became suspicious and began a separate investigation which ultimately revealed the self-serving nature of the prior statement and the depth of the conspiracy. Mr. Brown has been placed on temporary leave pending further investigation. Mr. Te'o's name has been removed from Mel Kiper's Big Board. That is all.
