Pats cut 2 from the 53...

Doesn't that leave us with 50 players? I assume that Cunningham will fill one of the 53, but who're the other two players?

Maybe some guys from the practice squad get promoted.

Last week, the Pats promoted Kamar Aiken to the 53rd spots, so cutting 2 get the roster down to 51. Cunningham will fill one of the 2 positions. The other is anyone's guess.

Re: Pats cut 2 from the 53...

If the Pats sign someone from the outside this late in the season, it would be Gaffney who at least knows the system to a certain extent. If the signing did not happen by Friday, it is likely the 53rd spot will be someone from the PS. But who?  After the Christmas Eve Scrooge move, there are Ebert, Forston, Williams, Tarpinian and Miller left. Need wise, Williams or Ebert?

Given the need for another wideout, I thought Gaffney too (assuming he can play; not sure if his suspension is over).  But a corner is also a possibility if he's worried about Talib and Dennard.

My take on Talib and Dennard is that they'll be fine. I don't think he even lets them practice last week if either's injury was projected to be that serious. Also, the fact he even dressed Talib has to mean that.

Dennard probably has a slight sprain, so Houston losing and a 2 seed would be ideal.

I think that's most likely, but you never know with Belichick.  Assuming they're both ready for the playoffs, I think a wideout would be helpful and Gaffney is the only guy who I can think of who is available, has experience in big games, and knows the system.  His skills would also be a good fit.

Question is whether he has anything left and whether he's even eligible to play given his suspension.

Wasn't his suspension only like 2 games? I am pretty sure he's served it unless his release has blocked him serving it?

It was two games . . . but he was cut before missing any.  I don't know the rules on this one.  He's been out more than two games, but I'm not sure it counts if he wasn't under contract anywhere.  It may be one of those situations where he has to serve his suspension when he comes back . . . or it may not . . . I just don't know and haven't found any explanation anywhere.

Re: Pats cut 2 from the 53...

Yeah, with Gronk healthy, the starting four (Gronk, Hern, Welker, and Lloyd) are pretty nice.  It's just helpful to be able to sub in that Stallworth-like guy periodically to create more pressure on the defense deep.  They can live without a guy like that, but if I were trying to improve the offensive skill positions, that's the one player I'd like to add.  Ridley, Vereen, Bolden, Woodhead are a nice backfield.  Hoo, and Fells give nice depth at TE (and Hoo doubles as a FB).  At wide receiver, though, there's just no depth (there are only four on the roster now). Branch still has that chemistry with Brady, but he's just not that effective anymore.  And Slater has never really made an impact at WR. Add one more guy to the mix in that position, and this team looks very complete on offense for the playoffs.

Of course, skill positions are only part of the equation.  The O line needs to pick it up.  I just rewatched part of the SF game.  Too many times when linemen are beat.  I know SF has a great defensive front and they're going to win a lot of battles, but we need to win a few more of them to hold our own against the best defenses.

Re: Pats cut 2 from the 53...

BB is big on tryouts.  Years ago, Gaffney was the third tryout in a series of wide receivers sitting by the phone.  He stuck.  BB may have some random free agents in mind to plug holes for the second season, or he may have developmental players that he simply wants on the Patriots' roster for next year's training camp.

I'm sorry for the fullback.   He may be back next week or he may be slowed, injured or simply not progressing quickly enough and gone, we never know.

WR Kamar Aiken was just promoted from the practice squad for the Jags game and may wind up back on the squad in 24 hours.  This says to me that some WR or TE on the active roster whose name begins with G just got better.   Also, Cunningham probably got better.

The 53rd player should preferably be someone who has worked with the Pats and is familiar with them.  Alternatively, certain positions such as "sack specialist" are simply line up and go positions.  There's not a lot of season left to learn the ropes.

Re: Pats cut 2 from the 53...

Did the Pats pull the scrooge move to cut Develin and Aiken on Christmas Eve because they think no one will be looking at waiver wire over Christmas and now both cleared waiver and can go back to the PS?

But seriously, cannot imagine other teams were salivating over the prospect, and were laying in wait, to get their hands on either one of them.

Re: Pats cut 2 from the 53...

Wide receiver Kamar Aiken and fullback James Develin, both waived by the Patriots on Monday, have cleared waivers and are now free agents, according to a league source.

Each player was previously promoted from the Patriots' practice squad to the active roster, and each appeared in one game.

Both players retain practice-squad eligibility, and the Patriots have three open spots on their practice squad, opening the door for one or both to return in that capacity.
