In Response to Re: Poll says PATS will miss the playoffs. : I am not even sure I remember the "Welker 70 yard return" or what it is you are babbling about.
of course not - we call those blinders.

Not one sane, objective football fan would walk away from any recent Colts/Pats games and not acknowledged there were some very iffy calls, most of them favoring Indy.
I don't know about most favoring the colts, but at least you are acknowledging favorable calls for the pats.  We are making progress.

I will add that I made a mistake. The 2008 18-15 game was actually very cleanly called. I rememeber thinking how refreshing it was.
so now in your opinion you have 2 cleanly called losses (05 in FB and 08 in Indy).  leaving 3 questionably called losses and 1 questionably called win.

Of the 3 questionably called losses (your opinion)- 2 included calls, as we have discussed, that have benefited both teams (06 AFCCG, 09 in Indy).

we are left with one pats win (07 in Indy) that you say was poorly called - can you be specific?  Pats were called for more penalties than the colts and still won.

And one pats loss (06 in Foxborough) that you say was poorly called.  It appears in this game that the teams were even in the penalty department.  Brady however, threw 4 ints and 0 TD's.

I said he had an off year. You disputed that and now you just made up an excuse for his Off year. I fully expect Brady to be better this year than last.

I don't even see where there is an argument on this one. Any reasonable Pats fan should be able to admit what they saw out of Brady last year was Sub-par for him. I was ready to pewk(Can't believe you can't say that) after the Ravens Playoff game. The whole team was injured and put out a Sub-Par performance. I think what we need are some of the youngsters to step as leaders...BB Eats, sleeps and lives football first. That's why he has had success. We need a couple of these young guys to start doing the same. I.E...Bruschi, Vraebel, Troy Brown, Brady, Harrison when we were winning. That's when we'll win more Superbowls.

    Underdogg, Springer,

The reason us PAT fans have a lot of excitment for this up coming season is because last year ended up being our rebuilding year (still made the playoffs) and we had a lot of first year guys stepping in and contributing.  These players will only be better this year with a years experience in a very complicated system.  We have weeded out the "bad apples" and added some very solid players (draft, free agents).  We replaced our #3 WR who couldn't catch a cold with a player who has one of the most sure hands in the game ever.  Will we go 16-0 AGAIN? Probably not (even tho we have the balls to try), but there is no reason for us to not believe that we will be even better than last year, especially when the greatest Q.B. to ever play the game will be back to his old self.  LOVE being the underdogs!!!!!

Love it. I hope these build all the way through the season. There is nothing better than a BB coached team laying in the weeds going into a season. 12-4. Brady will toss 35-40 TDs and Maroney has a breakout year.  Defense ascends into the top 5, worst case a top 10 NFL D. GaryTX, how many new guys will be starting on D?  Maybe 1? Maybe 2?  Spikes or McKenzie have a good chance to push Guyton aside and maybe McCourty over Butler.  But, that's it. Sure, if Gerard Warren wins a job or possibly if Cunningham becomes the find of Round 2 (very unlikely, obviously), then you have more new bodies, but overall, the core of the defense is will be 2 and 3 years in. They'll know almost right away if a guy like Gerard Warren can switch from DT to DE in a 3-4.   Basically, if he or Lewis get cut, that's likely what that means. But, overall, how can you not like the young foundation building here? The secondary has a chance to be very good. I can't wait to watch the preseason games to see how BB sees the defense.
    Posted by russgriswold

All I'm saying is it's a young defense and some patience may be warranted.  I'm going to enjoy the evolving of this defense.  You couldn't say that last year.  There are options this year.  Another reason for guarded optimism is the schedule.  It's absolutely brutal.
As far as new faces go Crable and Cunningham on the outside, Spikes and McKenzie inside, McCourty should see ample time, it's time to see more of Chung and the fight for the RDE spot.  Although they won't be on the field at time I see plenty of playing time for all.

The Jets didn't win last year, and neither did the Colts.  The Pats won the division.  The Jets made the playoffs only because 2 teams let them win so as not to risk injury.  Nobody will remember that the Colts lost in the SB.  They will remember that New Orleans won.  So Underdoggg...you have nothing to be so cocky about.  See a shrink and maybe you can control that frustration and anger you have about the Pats.

I agree with you for the hope.... I want the Pats to play smash em up football like the old days and crush people with defense, BUT...... none of us here will know just how this will work out until the season gets going. I'm not all that thrilled with the new TE's until I see that they can handle the game, as for running backs, I hope this new kid can dance right past the blocks unlike maroney dancing into them. Until then I just cant get that excited....

I understand completely what you are saying but the same could be said about any team in the league not just the Pats. The Dolphins for example had Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, and Chris Clemmons in there secondary as rookie's. Brian Hartline and Chad Henne (first year as a starter) on offense. I'm sure all of them will improve especially with the presence of Brandon Marshall. That's the goal of any team in the offseason to improve, is it not? I look at the Dolphins last year and take in the fact that we lost our starting QB, RB, NT, CB, and ILB for the year. If that happened to any team what are the chances they make the playoffs? I think given the circumstances Miami played very well for having all of those key injuries and rookies playing on both side of the ball. I know one thing is for sure, the AFC East will be one of the toughest divisions in football this year and I think it is great to be a fan of any team in the AFC East as long as you're not a Bills fan.

Not true as a Dolphin fan. Miami has split with the Pats for two years straight. I love Pats/Dolphin games because they can go either way and are always great physical games.

Re: Poll says PATS will miss the playoffs.

These polls remind me of the sportswriter who went underground into a sports advice boiler room.  He was ordered to call people up and give a free sample of who was going to win next week's biggest game versus the point spread.  The only thing was, he was ordered to tell 50% of the cold-call prospects that one team would win and the other 50% heard that the other team would win.  After the game, he'd call back the 50% of satisfied prospects and say "See, what did I tell you?"

Sportswriters aren't quite random number generators.  Rather, they say what readers want to hear.  People nationally are tired of the Patriots winning 107-37 in the last nine regular seasons, and they want someone else, anyone else.  So, the results of that one Baltimore game is everything to them.  I think the Patriots were simply in mourning for that game.

Of the Patriots, Kirwan writes: "Where is the pass rush, and how will the young secondary hold up?"
    Posted by Wade1patfan

To answer the question, Tully Banta-Cain is considered the sixth best outside linebacker in the NFL, and he specializes in the pass rush.  Second rounder Jermaine Cunningham specializes in the pass rush too.  If Crable gets off of his sick bed (well, he claims he's healthy now) he'll be a third LB sack specialist, helpful for BB's patented UFO style of pass rushing.

At some point a young secondary grows up.  There's usually a big jump between year one and year two.  Two key secondary players are making that jump, Butler and Chung.  McCourty is a first rounder, a rookie, but he gives BB another option.  It's a telling sign that Shawn Springs, a reasonable NFL cornerback as they go, got the heave this early.

Re: Poll says PATS will miss the playoffs.

Responding to Boomer - the idea of rebuilding is a copout.  All teams lose players and I understand that the pats strength (its D) has lost its cornerstones, but it could also be said that maybe they were kept a year too long or should have been replaced one year at a time (if possible).

Indy has had frequent changes to its O and D.  In the last decade we've parted ways with Marvin Harrison; Edgerrin James, Tarik Glenn, Jake Scott, Ken Dilger, Marcus Pollard, David Thornton, Cato June, Dominic Rhodes, Booger McFarland, Marlin Jackson, Tyjuan Hagler.

We've also dealt with multiple injuries to people like Sanders, Freeney, Jackson, Gonzalez and ineffective draft picks like Ugoh and Pollak.  And the colts continue to try and figure out the D tackle position which has been generally bad to ok forever.

But the colts made the playoffs too.  However, when the colts lost during all of this turnover the losses were called chokes.  Pats fans don't get the luxury of praising their team during injury and turnover unless they win the superbowl.  That is this board's collective mentality.

i cant say one way or the other if the pats will make the playoffs but i dont think the jets are better than they were at the end of the playoffs

but its like 305 pointed out, the phins had a tremendous amount of not only injuries, but season ending injuries and quite a few first year players who played well for rookies...we added by subtracting JT, JP and gibril wilson and our defense, which was awful last year, was strengthened by having a very solid draft and really adding depth to that front 7

im not gonna sit here and claim the phins are the team to beat, because you have to win the division first and go from there...but they are improved and if they stay healthy, they will give the pats a run for their money

ok...the one thing that really gets me going are you idiots who say that Giselle (however it is spelled) is making Brady less likely to compete like he did in the past!

If any of you had any brain...Giselle is one of the most hard working women out there & that is why Brady is with her (outside of her looks).  He's with her because he loves the drive & motivation she has (something Moynahan did not/does not have).  She is & will be in full support of Tom competing to the fullest & doing what he needs to do to be ready for the season.  On top of that, yes, having a family has changed his priorities, but that DOES NOT equate to changing his drive to be the best QB...it's about using the time that he has when he isn't with his family & utilizing it in the most effiecent way!  He could be in Foxboro 24/7 but not working full out, or work 120% when he is focusing his time on getting ready....I'd take the 120%!!!  Like the saying goes...Quality not Quantity!!!

The Pats will be great this season & I'm VERY excited for the season to start!

Doesn't matter who they have ,if they don't come up with some creative play calling esp on offense. Defenses will be all over Brady. Hopefully better blocking (Crumpler) will result in more opportunities for the RBs. I'm just don't have a great feeling about O'Brian as an offensive coordinator, but  felt the same about McDaniels. BTW any of you think Brady is trying to send a message by staying away. IMHO I still believe he should be spending more time with the team. It's ok to talk about leadership and listening to Belichick, but shouldn't he get back to work and take over the team.
    Posted by NEGAME

First of all, I can understand some doubts about O'Brien....  but McDaniels helps guide the best offense in the history of the league, then follows up with 11 wins with a QB that had only started in high school, and you say you had doubts.  Are you insane?

Further, Yes... Brady should be sending a message.  Two Super Bowl MVP's and a league MVP should constitute a restructured contract ASAP.  He will be in absolute Pro Bowl/MVP form without a doubt.  It is a contract year!  Do you even follow football?

The Patriots will go as far as Brady can lead them.  The defense has needed to get younger, and they will be much better this year.  It takes a couple of year for young DB's to get comfortable to make plays on the ball.  There are exceptions, but those are usually blue-chip caliber studs (usually top 10 picks).

Look for the Patriots to be unstoppable after week 6 when Welker will likely return.
